Title: Vine Maple Flatbow 40#@25"
Post by: Weylin on November 26, 2017, 11:43:40 pm
I made a nice little vine maple bow for a young woman in Florida. She is interested in eventually bow hunting deer with the bow but she also wants to practice ambidextrous shooting. To accommodate this I left off the arrow rest and made a double sided leather arrow pass. The light brown stain on the middle section of the limbs was made from a steel wool/vinegar stain. I was expecting it to be more grey but I like how it turned out. I went with the brown theme. The light marks on the edge of the tips are made by lightly scraping away the stain with a small file. I got that idea from a trade bow I received from Badly Bent. I'm pleased with it's performance. It is quick shooting with no hand shock. More than enough to take a deer with. I was actually out in the woods behind my house to take some pictures of the bow the other day. As I was walking along in my jeans and noisy red rain coat carrying a bright orange backpack I looked up to see a nice fat fork buck browsing about 20 yards away from me. He hadn't even seen me yet. It's the late archery season for my area. I had half a mind to try and string up this bow that I was carrying and taking a shot with the stone point I had. After a minute or so, he saw me and walked off. I guess I'll let the owner of the bow take the first deer with it.  :-D

You just aren't capable of making an ugly bow, this one looks great as well  ;D
I like the natural tips - no overlays.

Very nice Weylin! You make some great VM bows,  could pick one of your bows out of a pile quite easily

Thanks guys! It was fun to play around with couple new ideas for the finish work. I will try some of them again and probably tweak them. I'm packing it up tonight to send out the door. It's funny, with all these vine maple bows I've made, I've never made one for myself. One of these days I'll actually own one...  ;D

Absolutely beautiful!   Get out there and harvest some more and get that bow built for yourself.  Then we can go down to GV and harvest an animal or two or three...Have a great holiday with the family.
