Title: Fumed mulberry bendy
Post by: leonwood on December 17, 2017, 01:59:17 pm
This was a leftover split of mulberry, both length and width are almost unchanged except for some sanding. Kind off nice when roughing out the basic profile takes only 10 minutes;-) there's only two rings in this bow, you can see the light earlywood separation in the closeup of the tip.
I don't make a lot of bendy handles but somehow it felt right for this stave.
Narrowed the handle just a bit and flipped the tips a little with steam.
This was a very pale coloured mulberry so I fumed it for about five days. Came out pretty dark for cheap low concentrate ammonia from the supermarket!
I glued some cork on the handle to make it a little more comfortable (I like beefy handles) and wrapped it with cotton cord and some brown b50.
Shot it a bit over the last week and it shoots really smooth so I am probably going to use it for the upcoming target competitions.

Specs:
Wood: mulberry
Length: 62"
Max width: 1.18" (3cm)
Draw weight: 48@28
Finish: fumed, danish oil
Nocks: ipe
String: 8 strand fasflight, endless loop

Thanks guys! Mulberry is a great bow wood if you ask me. Still have to buy a kitchen scale to get the exact mass but this one feels extremely light. Only have one short piece of mulberry left. Will probably try to make a short molly type flightbow from that piece

Very nice bow, I love the colour, bend and finish on it and it looks like a fast shooter as well! how do you fume it with ammonia solution? Just apply it with a rag?

Cheers,

Phil

Really nice bow. Does ammonia fume affect to performances or properties of bow ?? or just changing color ?

Thanks Phil!
This "fuming" is done using the damps from the ammonia. I followed Simons advice on how to do this (I think he has a howto somewhere here or on his site) I use a large pvc pipe closed on one side, put the bow in and put this on top of a small cup of ammonia in the corner of my shop. Works really easy, just fumed a black locust recurve this week.

As far as I know it is only cosmetic. I always let the bow dry out a few days after fuming just in case. However, there is some weird stuff going on while fuming which I don't fully understand. I only sand to about 120 but when the bows come out of the fuming pipe they are extremely smooth, almost polished but without the gloss.

Wow.....62" lg. and 1 3/16" wide mulberry bow, pulling 28" ....good job!!.  what does the bow weight.  Real light in the hand?
That's a beauty.
