Great start to a new year! Eleven below zero with clear skies and fresh snow. We shot the 3Ds and afterwards had a real nice breakfast. I had my Grandson with me and even though nether of us shot exceptionally well it sure was great to get out.
Happy New Year to all!

You're a hardier bunch than I am. It's great to have traditions with friends. (S) :OK

Pat,
Coldest morning that I shot on was minus 22. If you stay out of the wind it is not too bad. Trick is to figure out how to dress so that it does not interfere with shooting your bow. I found wearing a vest over a couple of heavy wool shirts over heavy weight long underwear keeps me warm enough for the couple of hours we are out but is not too bulky to shoot in. Another issue is targets that are frozen. Tips need to be pinned or you risk losing your point. Also many times your arrow "glances off" the frozen target. Lose a missed arrow sometimes in the deep snow but the rewards for getting out far outweigh the negatives for me. Beautiful and quiet in our woods this time of the year.

Nice picture Brian. It is always difficult to find something warm enough for those temperatures that lets you still be able to shoot properly. I'm thinking some hot cocoa or coffee would be pretty popular with breakfast.

Nice picture Brian, Davy said he was planning on being there New Years day morning, and I see he made it. Looks like yall had a great day. :)

Pappy,
Dave must have been practicing while he was down at your place. He shot very well. Sadly we have lost many of the original group (some have passed and some have just drifted away). Dave, Barb and myself are the last of the original members who started the tradition. Lots of great memories up there. We have some great new folks along with some seasoned Members who have joined us so I am hopeful our tradition of getting together and shooting will continue on in the future.
Take care,
Brian (the short gray bearded guy in the picture)

What fun
wish some folks were close to here to shoot with

Well the Gang was back out there this morning. Warmed up some from our New Years Day outing. It was only minus 4 this morning. Ten of us shot the course. Targets were still froze and we had a few arrows deflect here and there. Most everyone was real close with their scores today. Woods were beautiful with a covering of snow on everything. Animal tracks were abundant. Camera was not working great in the cold but I did get a picture of Jim and his winning arrow at the quarter target. Followed up our shooting with a eggs, home fries and bacon. Another real nice morning spent with friends. Very fortunate to have the opportunity and a place to shoot with my Friends.
Take care, Brian

Got to love that, nothing like spending a day with friends of the same mind. :) I am fortunate to have friends to hang out with also that love archery and other primitive skills and feel very blessed as I know you do. :)

Another good one this morning. Clear skies, fresh snow and single digit temps. Eleven of us shot the course. Mixture of equipment ranging from selfbows to laminated traditional bows to some vintage longbows from the 50s. Everyone shot well with only a few misses. We had a tie on the quarter target which required a "shoot off" to determine who took home the pile of quarters (which had froze to the rock everyone had placed them on). After shooting, Tom and Don cooked up pancakes and sausage and egg burritos. Dino brought up some of the furs he and Colton had caught to show Everyone. He had a mixture of fox, fisher, coyote, mink. beaver, weasel and raccoon. Kevin had brought up the bows he received in the Christmas exchange to show off. Everyone hung around a little longer than normal, talking about bows and hunting. Real nice time this morning.

What a difference a few days makes! Recent above freezing temps and a little rain made most of our snow disappear. I am hoping we get some snow this upcoming week for our annual snowshoe shoot next Saturday. Beautiful morning to be in the woods even without the snow. Our creek is flowing again. We had a good size crew this morning with several shooting selfbows. Arrows actually stayed in the unfrozen 3d targets. Lost arrows from previous mornings that were buried in snow were visible again and were easily retrieved. Quarter target was won by Mark. Afterwards we enjoyed a excellent breakfast cooked up by Tom in the Clubhouse.
Another great Winter morning shared with Friends. Hated to leave this morning!

It was a beautiful morning Brian!
I think Mark was a bit shocked to win the quarter shoot, because he forgot the cash on the rock and was walking away with the group when I called him back.

Kevin,
I was happy to see Mark win. Mark is one of the best Hunters, Trappers and Fishermen I know (and that is saying a bunch with many of my other friends being damn good Outdoorsmen! I keep hoping some of their skill rubs off on me). It is going to be a long week for me with the anticipation of our annual Snowshoe Shoot this Saturday. Hands down it is my favorite event of the Winter.

Been "tinkering around" with rebuilding my selfmade snowshoes. I have the weight down to very close to my Ojibawa shoes. Beefed up a few areas. I want to try them out first but I may run our course using them.

They look like they will work great Brian.

We held our annual Snowshoe Shoot this morning. It was a cold morning with a bright blue sky and just enough snow that the course could be run with snowshoes. All Classes were well represented this year with a total of 18 Shooters. In addition to the 18 Shooters, 6 Spectators attended. There was a real nice fire going at the start line to keep warm by while the Shooters waited for Hannah to send them off. The Compound Class shot first followed by the Traditional Class with the Selbow Class leaving last. The half mile course consisted of 5 3D targets and one paper target (the Wild Yeti). Scoring was 10,8,5. Afterwards, Phil and Dave cooked up a hot lunch of hot dogs and chili along with a great salad made by Lynnn. The “Traveling Deer Call” was raffled off. Mark Thill will take the call with him hunting this Fall. T Shirts were awarded to the Winners in each Class. Some Members had brought up some projects they have been working on including Andy who brought up some of the nicest handmade knives I have seen. Dino had some primitive snowshoe frames he built from raw materials from his woodlot.
I would like to thank Hannah for doing the start line times, Dave B. for doing the finish line times, Kevin for helping setup targets and supplying the Yeti target, Phil and Dave for cooking Lunch, Tom H. for helping pick up targets, Lynn for taking pictures, Sue for maintaining the campfire and everyone else who attended.
Here are the results for the Selfbow Class:
Colton 51 (15:00)
Brian 46 (16:02)
Kevin 39 (15:09)
Hole in the Bow Chuck 36 (15:18)
Jim N. 35 (12:28)
Rob 34 (12:02)
Tom H 30 (10:35)
Dino 28 (7:30)
Gene 28 (14:45)

These made it through the course without incident. As if my short leg 60 year old body needed anything more to slow me down running against all these younger guys. I had the slowest time of the day but I had a blast.

The snow shoe shoot was a lot of fun again this year Brian.
Your home made shoes were pretty cool,
it was nice to see our youngest competitor Colton out shoot all of the old geezers to win his class and I think everyone slew the Giant wild yeti!

Sure looks like a lot of FUN - Thanks for sharing (=) :OK ! Bob

Shot this morning with our weekly group. Special treat this morning after shooting, Dino cooked up French Toast with his homemade Bone Creek Syrup. Sue brought a Egg and Cheese Pie. Topped it off with some bacon. Breakfast fit for a King!

Great shoot again this year!! Thanks again to Brian and others for putting it together! I'm especially proud of my son Colton...looking at the scores, I may be asking HIM for some shooting advise! ...and congrats to Andy de-throne-ing me with the fastest time! My big Huron style shoes work great in deep snow with a heavy pack...not exactly designed for my lightening speed ;)! I think in the off season I will be fabricating some primitive snowshoes specifically for "running" :-D.
Looking forward to Sunday morning!
