Title: starting to paint a bow,,,,brace profile and outside photos
Post by: bradsmith2010 on February 04, 2018, 08:40:35 pm
well I am gonna paint this one with acrylic, then I am going to tone it down and make it look old,, the acrylic can be a bit harsh in color,, but with a few layers of neutral glaze and some sandpaper, I think I can tone it down,, this is an osage d bow with goat hide back,, just painting it for fun to see what I can do,, will keep you posted as I go along, I am improvising the design,, so who knows what it will turn out like,, thats the fun,, (SH)

Excellent, I like that design. I had the same idea and just started mine. Of course mine is a simple geometric pattern nothing as intricate as yours. You are right about the intensity of the paint, let us know what you come up with to tone it down.

ok I have some great ideas,, on how to tone it down,, will have to see if it works,, (W
I dont think it matters how simple the design is,,, it will make the bow very special,,

I agree. I also thought every body has an antique looking bow, I can have a brand new one. This is my first bow from a stave.

ok I worked on it a bit,, and decided to distress it a bit as I go,,
here is the before and after on this section,,
I just sanded it a bit,, and then put a glaze of acylic orchre and gel medium on it,,
looking good,, :)

also the pic of the paint I mixed with ochre to tone it down,,, dont worry, I have a plan B,, if it does not turn out, I can always paint the back black and make another design, or plan c,, I can paint a sturgeon dessign on it,,  :)

also you can tone it down as much or little as you like, if you go too far, you can repaint the design and start over,, so lots of options,, remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so make it like you want,,:)

I just used a regular sharpie,, that being said they make a sharpie that is black paint that would be better I think,,

Nice tone down!  All the paint is acrylic, including the ochre?  Btw, Laubin (in "The Indian Tipi") has an excellent chapter on making and decorating rawhide.

Nicely made Brad. I like the faded out look and your magic scenery.
What's a bout aging with thinned down Umbra oil based paint? Kinda I did here: http://primitive-bows.com/osage-sinewed-plains-cheyenne-style-5426-no-58/

yes the oil based tone down would work great also,, that looks amazing,, I think the depth of color with the oil is a little better, ,but there is a dry time some might not want to deal with,, but it is very rich and deep,, I really like the blue sides on that bow,, nicely done,,
also the oil is natural pigment as well,, so is a bit more natural,,,,
I mainly wanted to show that the acrylic ,,, which is pretty inexpensive can work pretty well,,,,I have made the main design with oil and had good results,, (-S

Brad, just thought of something. I used to do a lot of calligraphy and pen and ink work. I wonder if colored inks would work. they have  a washed out look  to them on wood. Have you ever messed with ink? Or water colors, that's an idea if you sealed it well.

yes I have used ink and watercolor on wood arrows, and it worked fine,, just depends on the look you want,
I wanted a more opague look for this, so went with acrylic,, but choose your weapon and be creative,
and thanks again for the postive comments, I hope to get more done today and will post )W(

thanks guys,, the think twice and scrape once is great,,
and I am glad I may have inspired some ideas,, I learned alot,, I just tried some different things to see how they would look,  and probably the bow would look great with just taking one theme and sticking with it ,,,but I was having so much fun I got carried away,,, I am hoping the deer and turkeys will love it, I was thinking I might have to put a green or black masking tape on it to hunt turkeys , they see pretty good and make me nervous, so we will see,, full draw to come, I think good or bad,, :)
