Title: A sailors song I wrote and other scuttlebutt
Post by: sleek on February 24, 2018, 08:25:00 pm
Figured id post the lyrics here for review and critical opinions.
The first line is about bold sailors leaving, the rest is about every one that didnt come back to home port. The USN official song is referenced for added effect in the drink to the foam line. I wanted to add a reason to drink to the foam, give it a deaper meaning than just have a beer dedicated to the ocean.
I got tje idea for the song from a book titled There are no tomb stones in the sea.  I read that title and was taken by how profound that sentence is. I had to write it into a song.

Drop the sheets, secure the rigging
Belay the lines, anchors aweigh
Let the sails unfurl and carry us away
To the horizons before us come what may

Forgotten by time but not by tide
Its an honour to have lived a sailors life
When you drink to the foam you drink to me
For i am every sailor lost to sea.

To be forgotten by time, but not by tide,
'Neath the waves my shipmates lie
They have sliped below and there they sleep
Honored to make their graves within the sea

There are no tomb stones on the sea
Only foam and whitecaps mark the memory.
When you drink to the foam, you drink to me
For I am every sailor lost to the sea.

Drop the sheets, secure the rigging
Belay the lines, anchors aweigh
Let the sails unfurl and carry us away
To the horizons before us come what may

END

Its to be sung like an old Irish drinking song, fast paced steady tempo, with a rising and falling voice as a ship on the sea.

If i can figure how to post a voice clip I will. I wish the forum had a way to press a microphone button to post a voice clip.

Very good!  Poignant is the right word, I think.  I will show that to Jacie, and maybe she can put the right music to it.  You might try a YouTube link to get the voice bit to post.

Sleek,
Pm me your email.  Jacie said she would work on a melody.  You and I are in the same boat - we write great lyrics, but are musically challenged! >:D! Lol!  You can hear her on https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/JacieMcConnell, then Mystical Moments, A Sign of Things to Come.  She wrote the music, and I wrote the narratives.  She does have other cd's as well.

Btw, if I remember correctly, burials at sea were entered into the ship's log by gps coordinates for US personnel, freindlies, and POWs.  Bin Laden is an exception!  Btw, do you have a title for the song?

Glad you like them. The Navy song Anchors Aweigh is referenced in this song. Drink to the foam is part I wanted to emphasize.

I redid it and changed the lyrics some to make it flow better.

Drop the sheets, secure the rigging
Belay the lines, anchors aweigh
Let the sails unfurl and carry us away
To horizons 'fore us come what may

Forgotten by time but not by tide
Its an honor to have lived a sailors life
When you drink to the foam you drink to me
For i am every sailor lost to sea.

To be forgotten by time, but not by tide,
'Neath the waves my shipmates lie
They have sliped below and there they sleep
Honored to make their graves 'neath the deep

There are no tomb stones on the sea.
White caps and foam mark their memory.
When you drink to the foam, you drink to me
For I am every sailor lost to the sea.

Drop the sheets, secure the rigging
Belay the lines, anchors aweigh
Let the sails unfurl and carry us away
To the horizons 'fore us come what may

Think that is a good song to the foam.  Raise your glass, lads!  Ta doc ardu!  Now about those singing lessons >:D!  Actually you sing better than I do, I'm a seannachie, and narrator, and a bit of a writer when the mood hits!  I think Jacie can do a suitable melody for that.

If i could afford time and money, id love singing lessons. I certainly need tgem as much as i enjoy singing. I am very excited to hear what jacie comes up with! And she is welcome to take whatever liberties with it she needs to make a finished product she is happy with.

Sleek,
I think Zuma left out a comma somewhere!   Either that, or I am too far into his head >:DLol!  Jacie said she can do a melody for the "foam" and would really like to have you try some lyrics for "Celtic Stomp".  With that rig Zuma has, he may be getting lots of company!!  With grog!

I cant tell you how excited I am to hear what she works up. Will she be doing just a vocal melody or doing some music as well?  I will see what i can do with Celtic Stomp. I need to purchase it, i was only able to sample it before. Did she say what she thought of Foam? Bu the way, i think I may title it of time and tide. Not certain. Perhaps yall can come up with a suiting title.

Zuma has one hellova rig. Id bring brandy for certain! My liquid love is brandy.

Glad Hawkdancer got that straightened out, :) :D :D )P(
Sleek I wish that was my rig. I am lucky enough to have so
many great friends that let me play first mate.
You know Jimmy Buffet started out around here and sings" Son of a Son of a Sailor"
His long ago partner hung out with us briefly Buddy Allen.
We all almost did an island video back in 97. On the same rig LOL

I met Jimmy once. He was opening a Margaritaville in Dubai.  He autographed my cheap cowboy hat and i asked him to sign my atlas. I tracked the courses I sailed, with ports visited, shipmates lost, and dates of other importance and where I was when we went through 3 typhoons in the south china sea. Also any famous person I met I had the autograph it. Well, Jimmie had no clue why i was handing him an atlas to sign, all he did was look at me real confused and say, " I sure... like signi g them atlases. " I just smiled and mobed on so the sailor next in line could shake his hand and get an autograph as well. Poor guy, so polite, but confused as hell, why the hell am I signing an atlas he musta been thinkin.

Sleek
He had port of call at several destinations near home or
my older brother and I would have never been born.
His last active duty ride was on the Matoponi.
Circumnavigating the globe and more. I am not sure if
he was aboard the same ship when his  sister ship was sunk in the Atlantic.
That incident is documented in the book "Q boats VS U-boats."
He and the United States Navy were attached at the hip.
