Don't see them flying over top any more that's for sure. It's gonna warm up to the fifties by this weekend though.

We're supposed to get 60F plus tomorrow and Friday, 50's over the weekend and about that next week.  On the other hand, we are only at 80% of normal snowfall here and less than 70% for the state, and March and April are supposed to be our snowiest months.  What part of Iowa are you in?

The last 3 weeks in February we never got below freezing. That is very odd for us. Our last frost date is May 15. In 1993 we had a blizzard here and up the East Coast on March 13.  This week we are getting night time temps in the upper 20s  to 31 deg which is typical for us and we even saw about 4 big snow flakes this morning.  I'm afraid to see what July and August brings.   (A)

We got 3-5" dumped on us last night. I will still take cool over hot any day. I like nice weather, but hot weather isn't for me.

Finally above freezing! Started at 9F this morning but it’s 44 now!

Gonna get knapping soon!

And the turkeys were out strutting, coyotes in all the fields and the elk were down licking salt off the highway!

Pictures through the work truck window so they’re not the best.

I'm with you Pearl.  This fat yankee would rather have cool or even cold over hot.  We got into the 70's couple of weeks ago and people thought spring was here. NOT YET.  I do like spring and fall but, could do with the heat of summer.  Have a good one.

Nice weather vane Ed. We can get snow all the way to May around here. Had about six inches this morning that came down soft and fluffy. It usually snows on our sugar beets after we plant them. We always say to grow really good beets they have to get snowed on after planning in spring and before harvesting in fall.

The weather here's been perfect for collecting sap, 40s during the day, 20s at night. The evaporator's gonna get a workout this weekend for sure.

That's Gods' country that's for sure.Nice pics.
I don't mind winter yet too much really. It's Robin here who is always talking about warm and sunshine etc.I know I can't quite take the heat like I used to and the cold don't bother me like I said.
A good snowfall on newly planted oats is a plus nitrogen wise here too in southern Iowa.
People on the northeast coast are getting it again.

Now if I could get Robin to feel the same way...Ha Ha Ha.Just kidding...she's ok.
Upstate.....How much sap you figure to get or don't you know till it's done flowing usually?I bet there are those who would like to know how that process is done on here.I've checked into making it out of hickory bark but I gotta add regular old sugar to it.Kinda defeating the purpose is'nt it?

I don’t know how You northern folks do it. All that snow is pretty in pictures, but the cold that comes with it I have no use for. I’ll take hot over cold every time. I’ve spent 90% of my life in eastern Oklahoma and the mild winters here are still too cold for this guy. Breaks 100° pretty regular in July and August and I won’t complain about that near as much as I will 10°. Few years back in January we had a Wednesday that was -29° ( thought the world was coming to an end) and on saturday it was 76°. Oklahoma is bi-polar.

One tap will typically produce 1-2 gallons of sap per day as long as the freeze/thaw cycle continues.

I've got 12 taps in right now (a far cry from the 60 I've done in the past) and the cycle's been going for 2 days. So, I'm currently sitting on about 24 gallons of sap.

If the cycle continues throughout the week, which it's foretasted to do, I should have 40-50 gallons of sap by cook time on Saturday morning.

With the sugar content at 2%, 40 gallons of sap will make 1 gallon of maple syrup.  -C- :)

I see.Interesting to say the least.Sure wish I had good natural hard maple growing around here close by.We've got that old coon den softer type of maple along the rivers here.Imagine sap from that would work well too or even a bunch of sycamore trees.
The syrup is for sale here in various stores but none are locally made.

I made some syrup from Big Leaf Maple. I think I used $40 worth of propane to boil it down. I got about a half a pint. It was sweet but a little bitter. But I did discover that the sap right out of the bucket was the most refreshing drink. Do you ever drink the sap from Sugar Maple?

No I have not.
Title: Re: Not quite spring yet.
Post by: upstatenybowyer on March 09, 2018, 01:28:27 pm
Yes sir. Sap right out of the tree is like really fresh, clean water with just a bit of sweetness. I think health food stores sell it as a beverage.

A lot of different trees will produce sap that can be boiled into syrup, only the sugar content is usually no more than 1%, which means 80 gallons of sap to 1 gallon of syrup.  :-\

Yesterday the drive to work was dry and clear.  A wicked burst of snow hit just after I got there.  The snow melted on the roads and then froze again.  The roads went from normal to a thin sheet of ice in a matter of minutes.  I had to drive 20 miles to another plant.  It was a tense drive.  I got sideways at one point.  When I got to the interstate there were wrecked cars everywhere.  One was upside down.  The sun came out and melted the ice just as quick as it had formed.  I've never seen such a fast and drastic change in road conditions before.

Pat....That's a shame Pat.Hate to see that happen.Robin and me try to stock up on fruits for the winter/spring canning.Could very esily happen here too.The trees are'nt quite out of dormancy yet though here.
Clint....I hear ya.Those are the times that catch people off guard.Even 4 wheel drive won't save them from going in the ditch but might get them out of the ditch though....lol.

Bob, I hope I don't kick my own arse but most likely I will
be where it's below freezing daily and 10" plus on the ground.
Then hunt northward with the geese in a week or so.

Dancer, that's what I always said about Yellowstone.
Thank god, mother nature gives us these amazing environments.

Don, it's 12 deg this morning and most of the geese and ducks are in the rivers , lakes and ponds still froze up. Been getting up to the thirty each day. supposed to be 50 by  the weekend so spring is a comin I hope. Total snow for the season so far is 187"  and they are hoping to get to 200 by the first day of spring. Hope you don't get to much wind while chasing your geese and have a good hunt, Bob :-M  :-M

Zuma,  hope you have heat in the blind, coffee in the thermos, heap plenty shotgun shells, and more snow geese down than you can carry!  And a sore shoulder from shooting so much  >:D:-M :-M :OK.  If you get too many, send a bunch my way!  Wings included, lol! We don't have many out here yet and no snow to slow them down this year :(.  Heck, I'd even drive back to Iowa to pick them up! >:D  Have a great hunt!  I understand there are some mighty fine hams produced in Iowa, if you can find them.  Sort of a secret!

Mike, you sure you're not in the Rockies, or Minnesota!?  We got near 70 today and there is maybe snow Tuesday!  Robins showed up in Feb - went back south I think >:D. Got an eaglet due to hatch over east of here 20 miles or so, probably some owlets around as well.  Most other birds aren't here yet.  Glad you had good weather for the knap-in, though!
