Title: Grandpa's Toy
Post by: bjrogg on April 02, 2018, 07:25:20 pm
I've made a few kids bows and most where really a little to heavy for my young grandkids. I'm hoping they will find this one more to their liking. It's a almost bendy handle Osage. I flipped the tips, put on a arrow shelf and leather wrap (my first) handle. I made four Red Osier shoot arrows with copper wire points that I bareshaft tested. I also knapped a little stone point to go with it and a mink quiver.
It's  10lbs @ 15"
       13lbs @ 18"
With these little arrows it's a blast to shoot and doesn't hurt your shoulder at all.lol. I'm hoping it warms up and the kids and I can play with grandpa's toy. This is one of my favorites.

I would say that you have some lucky grandkids.

That is a sweet little bow and arrows.

If I ever become a Grandpa, I can only hope to make something so amazingly cool for my Grandkids. You really went the extra mile with those arrows and the quiver.  )P(

Thanks Swampman
Thanks Jeff, I'm sure you'll be a grandpa sooner than you can believe. I'm sure when that day comes you'll already have a bow ready even nicer.

Here's a couple more of the arrows

That's such a cooool lookin' lil weapon, Mr Brian!!
One of grandsons stores his bow/arrows here. Once in awhile I take them out on our lil range and have good time for hour, or so.
It's surprising how fast those little arrows seem to zip.
Congrats, fella!!

Cool!  Problem I have is most of my grandkids are adults, or at least teenagers!  Great grandson is too young to know what a bow is!  neat bow and arrow set!  I'm sure they'll love it!

Thanks Steve and Rob means a lot to me.
Thanks wooddamon1 and welcome to PA.
Thanks Mike, I've made bows for all my grandkids but some of them will need to be grown into. I decided to keep this one here so we can shoot it together. I honestly don't know if you can outgrow a bow and arrow set like this. I'd really like to shoot it through a chronograph. It's really fun to shoot. I have a son who's not married yet and when the rest of the grandkids grow into their bigger bows I'm thinking it'll go to him.
Jerry I understand. I hope your grandkids still think your cool. Understand how life changes for them at those ages. Different tugs from different directions. Like Alice said "I'm a boy and I'm a man". Maybe you can get them interested in making a bow. I'm sure you know that great grandchild won't say to young for long.
Thanks pnwarcher. You are very right. The arrows really do make the whole setup work right. Just for the heck of it I shot a kids arrow I bought from store and it flew terribly. I knew it would. Point was to light, weight FOC was terrible and it had plastic veins. I probably spent as much time or maybe more making the arrows than I did the bow, but it was time well spent. Hopefully they don't all get lost right away.lol.
Thanks Bob
Thanks Paul
Thanks Pappy
Thanks everyone for looking I can't wait to get some nicer weather to get the kids outside.

Excellent work, I bet your Grandkids will even know how to use a compass when they grow up. To many children these days couldn't survive overnight 10 miles from town.

Thanks Chris
Thanks Ed, I guess I never really grew up. Still only 5'5".
Thanks Bill, if your shoulder is still bothering you at Marshall maybe you can shoot this one.
Thanks Jwamalone, I'm hoping they stay interested in this stuff. They can still be hard to drag away from the video games.
Thanks everyone for looking

Going to bump this one for Matt too. Sorry to make you guys all look at these again.
Matt if you start seriously making kids bows matching the arrows to the bow really makes a huge difference.
