Since I make so many points at times, I figured I'd just create a thread where I can post them all without cluttering up the board.
4 from yesterdays chilly fireside knapping session. Black oil chert, a mostly cortex piece of hornstone, a overshot hunk of Rainy, and a really nice piece of Buffalo River.
-
Niiiiiice
-
Really like your stuff bowmo. Very nice scar patterns. I'm still not there yet.
Bjrogg
-
Mad,mad you say :o ;D >:D :-K
-
You really do have a touch for those scar patterns. I've tried before to consolidate my stuff but don't seem to stick to it!
Looking forward to seeing how it progresses for you.
-
Haha. Thanks guys!
Parnell: It's all credited to the magic of using an Ishi stick right. Took me a year or so to figure out the mechanics of how to use my body in relation to the stick but when you finally get it right and learn how to make the right kind of bevel on your continuous platform it's all good.
-
Nice work! Helps to be warm while chipping, carving, and making bows and arrows!
Hawkdancer
-
Very nice work. What is the tan material?
-
looks like heated tatanka river....
-
Jeb: the tan is the heated Buffalo River.
Another fluter for today.
-
oh my
-
This is a nice place to start my day bowmo. Thanks for sharing and keep em coming. Goes great with a hot cup of coffee and a beautiful sunrise.
Bjrogg
-
pretty sure daniel is pressure flaking those flutes...at least i saw him do it at flint ridge last year...he got so,e fancy lad hand pad he made..its pretty cool and he is also a great natural tool knapper
-
Look at those flutes! Great!
-
Well here's everything I've managed to chip so far in 2018. Really wish the temps would climb out the 30's here!
-
Really nice group...👍
-
Really nice bowmo. Nice assortment of styles and colors to. I'm ready for it to warm up to. Only good thing is I don't have to mow lawn yet. Heck half the time it's still covered with snow.
Bjrogg
-
Haha...yea most of these were made next to a campfire bjrogg. A couple with snow falling on me!
-
Those are some nice looking points.
Was the oil chert a bugger to knap?
-
Thanks Redhand. Yea, every piece of oil chert I have tried has been a pain. haha
-
That's a lot of work done, already. Really like those red Daltons on the right. I think I'd be able to recognize one of your points if they were in a pile!
-
Ha...thanks Parnell.
Here's a couple more.
-
Very nice bowmo. Like Steve said I think I could pick those scare paterns out of a pile. Really can see how well you plan out and execute you work. Thanks for sharing
Bjrogg
-
You guys sure are good at throwing compliments around ::)
Here's a couple more. A few of my best length flutes taken with an Ishi stick. And a Hixton point I made yesterday.
-
You guys sure are good at throwing compliments around
I think your going to see a few more thrown around bowmo. Man those are just plain sweet. Is that last one quartz? Makes me realize how much I have to learn yet.
Bjrogg
-
Very nice points! Excellent work!
-
Thanks guys.
bjrogg: That's Hixton which comes from Wisconsin. It's "silicified sandstone" and a lot like fine grained quartz.
-
Bowmo, are you using copper or antler or both? Paul
-
Eye candy. I'd be very interested to see what you've got setup for your Ishi stick and your fluting technique.
-
Thanks guys.
Paul: I use both for pressure flaking and punching but I mostly just use antler and stone.
Parnell: I'll try and remember to take some pics or a video.
One from yesterday. Lightly heated low grade Mill Creek.
-
bunch of junk points is all I see....keep on practicing bowmo....
-
bunch of junk points is all I see....keep on practicing bowmo....
Yah haha I have a stone pile I could put them on if you wanna get rid of those bowmo
Bjrogg
-
lol....he also makes killer pottery
-
Thanks for posting your work like this.
I agree with all the complimentary comments and love your flake scars.
I an see it now. Overstreets guide to Bowmos points, a best seller.
-
Your motivating me to start a singular thread of my own...instead of just writing "Recents" over and over. ;D
-
You guys are too nice! Haha.
Parnell: It does feel better than starting a new thread over and over haha.
Just got back from spending a few days down in Southern Illinois, sleeping in my car and collecting stone all day. :KN
-
You guys are too nice.haha
No problem bowmo, love to help you out. Got stone piles all over I can get rid of that stuff for you on.haha.
That looks interesting in that bucket. Can't wait to see what you do with it.
Bjrogg
-
eyes off that cobden folks..
-
That stuff looks great. Makes me want to cross over to S IL if I hit my buddy's place in KY this summer.
-
Everyone stay away from my rock! Illinois is all out now...these were the last ones... ::)
Some more pics from my trip.
-
.
-
Wow. We need a drooling emojithingy :o
Bjrogg
-
That Black Dog stuff must be real hard to work >:D :-K! That is a nice haul! Nice work!
Hawkdancer
-
dude daniel hope you come to the spring flint ridge bro..hmmmm and bring me some of that cob flint...not saying i am gonna be there but i might make a unexpected appearence at the campsite..maybe..possibly...probably...we wiil see
-
plus since i use all natural tools i would like to sit with you...maybe you could teach me somthin or other about knappin abo bro..
-
Maaaaaan I really I hope I get to go the Spring Ridge this year too! Still not sure if I can make it yet.
First point from the new stone I squeezed in this morning before work.
-
Good stuff, for sure. I'm really wanting to go to the Flint Ridge event. Haven't made it yet. I hit the TN Classic annually so the spring event isn't on my radar, but perhaps the end of summer event I may hit this year.
You know anything about your dogs breed? I've got a female that looks a lot like your dog.
-
I've only been to the Classic once a few years ago but it's a great event.
That's Grizz, she's a mystery mutt I rescued. She shows all kinds of breed traits so I have no clue what she is other than a real sweetheart. I had her with my at the Classic when she was still a puppy.
Here's another Cobden Dalton and some other Kaolin and Mill Creek bifaces I roughed out.
-
Dang bowmo those are awesome just like that mutt grizz. I personally have a soft spot for mutts.
Bjrogg
-
You might have to bring some of that rock to MoJam, and look me up! The cold down there in the Lead Belt comes with the northeast wind off the river and the humidity! You'll see spring a lot sooner than we will >:D! When it's springtime in the Rockies, it's hell down in the Ozarks! You do good work. I will have my tools and some rock along, hope to take a lesson. 1 day, bows; 1 day, knapping; 1 day, forging, fit in some flight shooting, and socializing, maybe stop to eat or sleep - sounds like fun!

A freshly heated batch from another time I went down to collect. Most of what was heated was already bifaced but the chunks and large spalls is what I worked down today. Yes I heat all that plus sand at once and yes you can heat 600 degree rock in a average roaster. A really ugly low grade piece of Mill Creek made a great bunch of glassy bifaces despite looking awful when I picked it up. The big one was the core and all the rest were large spalls off it i waited till heating to biface. Also made a mustache Simpson from a piece of the Kaolin as per a customer request.
-
:)
-
More cooked Kaolin.
-
So do you knap for a living, or for spending money? Or do you have piles of points collecting around the shop? Paul
-
Just keep em coming bowmo. One of the highlights of my day.
That is a sweet point and some very nice looking material.
Bjrogg
-
Thanks bjrogg!
paulc: I knap because I can't stop really haha. I sell a lot of points hafted as knives when I travel to events but I do have piles of points around my house to the tune of a few thousand haha.
-
Ok. Finally got a 'flute' recorded. It's a lame one but I'll take it. Turning on the camera can be the kiss of death for me at times.
https://youtu.be/oUqElcnthjU
couple other points I made that day too...
-
So nice to look at after a very long three days of work. Now I can dream about those beautiful points bowmo.
Bjrogg
-
Glad I'm still entertaining someone bjrogg...haha
Here's two from yesterday. Kaolin and Mill Creek...both raw.
-
Thanks bowmo I was starting to have to withdrawal symptoms from not getting my daily diary of a mad knapper fix. I really needed that. You really do fantastic stuff. Really give me something to strive for.
Bjrogg
-
You are posting some nice work and some pretty rock.
WA
-
Man those are some very nice points. 👍🏽 Keep them coming
-
Just jumped in to look at these and man you’re popping out some beauties! Keep it up
-
That's some fine knappin' ' Frank
-
great thread man
very nice points there and fine looking rocks too :OK :OK :OK
-
Wow...time can really get away from me.
Went to Devils Hole Knap In recently and of course forgot to take pictures other than a few points I made while there and a Mustache I forgot to post when I made it last month.
-
.
-
And here's some points I made the other day.
-
bowmo,
Really enjoyed looking at all your awesome work...
Don
-
All nice - thanks for sharing. Rick B
-
Thanks bowmo I needed that. Do you mind if I ask what your billet is made of and what you use for tip in your flaker? Man you sure have this figured out. Just beautiful.
Bjrogg
-
Thanks guys.
bjrogg the billet is some kind of river stone that was just shaped that way and the tip of that hand flaker is antler I shapped into a little dowel.
-
Thanks bowmo that's what I was guessing. Nice tools. Keep on posting those points.
Bjrogg
-
After watching a couple guys really school some rock with a long antler indirect stick I decided to finally make one and work on my heavy indirect skills. The stick is cane and the antler is a solid all the way thru whitetail tine I strike with the osage billet. Worked better for me than I thought it would. The two points were made incorporating the stick a lot on both.
-
.......................................
-
All I can say is nice, nice, nice... thank you for sharing.
-
Really Cool bowmo. Thanks for sharing your tool box. Do you dry your Antler? It seems like I have pretty good luck with in winter but when humidity gets up there it acts all different. Maybe it's just me. I do more knapping in the winter so I might just be more of my game.
Bjrogg
-
Never really noticed the humidity making a big difference in the way my antler works, and it's often around 90% here this time of year. I don't knap indoors as a rule, so I don't knap in the winter tho.
More indirect practice the other day...and all indirect preform and a Thebes.
-
I haven’t seen such a wide contact point for indirect being used before...interesting.
-
I'm just starting to get the hang of indirect. Still seems a bit uncomfortable holding stick pinched between my knee but a six by six block to put my foot on helps.
Bjrogg
-
bjrogg...yea it was the same way for me...that's why I made this one. The stick on this one is around 4 feet long and the end goes into the dirt and keeps the stick stable and easier to use. Way way easier for me.
-
Some more work from the last few days...
Mostly Illinois stone with a piece of Rainy in there too.
-
you're good man
I like them all :OK
-
Thanks Glis.
Off to the Lake Evergreen Knap In near Bloomington, IL. today but, here's some from a few days ago. Both Kaolin.
-
Have fun bowmo. Beautiful points as always. Really enjoy your pictures
Bjrogg
-
Beautiful stuff..
-
Good times at the Evergreen Knap In
Only made one finished point from a killer piece of root beer I got from Eric’s Rocks but made LOTS of Cobden bifaces.
-
..
-
..
-
Great pictures bowmo. Love all the rock. I'm drooling all over my phone.
Bjrogg
-
looks like a good time Daniel....also your stuff is looking fab bro
-
That root beer point is killer. You ever find flint in N IL? I grew up on Flint Creek in Lake County. Wondered if you knew of workable stone up that way.
-
Thanks guys!
Parnell: There is next to nothing around here since the glaciers smashed it all into gravel. There's some down at starved rock and at the western boarder of Illinois but not in large amounts or very good quality. I travel quite far to collect rock...usually 14 hours driving round trip.
