Starting to look like a slim trim Southern rifle. There will be a bunch more wood come off the front end before I'm done.

Great pictures Mike. Lots there to study. Looking forward to watching the build.

Following!
-
Looking good.

Pea shooter .36's are dear to my heart, since my first flinter was (and still is) one. They are certainly economical to shoot, both powder and ball. But I wonder, sometimes, if that economy is lost in the number of patches it takes to clean mine compared to the larger bores.

Lock is completely inlet and working, the sear is marked and triggers ready to inlet once I bolt the lock. This thing is close to being able to go bang, but far from done.

Taking a little break from the real construction and doing a little thinning and sanding. There's some curl starting to come out now which is a bonus because I didn't think that this piece had any!

Lock and triggers are in after a little readjusting! Took all day to get the lock and triggers to work but its all ready to bolt up and start getting everything buttoned up.

I love cutting dovetails by hand for the barrel lugs.

All the lugs are in and the stock is ready to pin. It was good to take a break from the wood work and drag out the hacksaw and files for a change.
-
Did you stain the glue you used to patch your lock mortis? I have heard abut it being done but no one says what kind of stain to use. I am looking at patching a bad mortise on a precarve.
-
I used Pro Bed, it dries a dark brown. I think once Im done there wont be enough left to tell much. I am working on an overlay today around the whole raised panel. I wont do this mistake again! I was so conscious of where I wanted the ban in relation to the breech plug and the location of the front of the lock bolt not being in the ramrod hole that I didn't realize how low I had the rear of the lock. I don't know why I was so worried about the front because I never intended to have a front lock bolt, only the rear on this southern gun.
Another mistake that I made but it worked out, is when I cut out the profile I got a little thin where the triggers go and using the double set triggers with that long trigger plate the angle didn't match well. I had to really grind down the front and back of the plate as well as the trigger bars. From now own I will have my parts on hand before I cut out the stock to make sure that everything works before hand.
Im building a 62 smooth bore now from a cherry blank and its going very well. Its been a challenge inletting that octagon to round tapered barrel!

Today I drilled and installed the touch hole liner. This picture shows the small cut in the face of the breech plug that the drill bit cuts as it drills the hole. You then remove the breech plug and polish this so powder falls in there easily when you load the rifle.

Also cut the dovetail and installed the rear and front sights.

Here is a shot of the touch hole.

It’s coming along really well! I cut my first ever dovetails in my barrel yesterday, looks like I’ve gotta practice more, yours looks good!

Trigger guard is in. Had to do a little modifying of the front lug to make it be where I needed it to be, but it worked great.
Now I can start thinning and sanding this thing down! The wood looks like I shaped it with a chain saw right now, but its getting ready to shine!

Nice job - I really like the stock profile.
Some years ago, I built a poor-boy Southern style, cap lock in 45 as a ball shooter - IIRC, it was 1-70" twist barrel. It was quite accurate and a great offhand rifle; it liked 70 grs. of FFFg and a patched ball. Went to an informal shoot with a group of fellows one morning and we shot all day. I noticed my groups were moving up as the day progressed and I was having to hold lower as it got later. Finally figured out that the sun was arcing straight overhead and the glint off the front sight was changing. I loved that piece but eventually sold it because my eyes aged out and I couldn't see the front sight anymore. Getting old sux...

Got the lock bolt washer that I made in. I'm thinking about not putting the patch box on this rifle and finishing it up like it is. I never use a patch box and not all guns had them.

Made the toe plate today out of an old hand saw blade, got it in and need to do a bit of tweaking with the screws and sides.

First coat of wood sealer applied. Going to take a break for a few weeks. I have a bear hunt and bow class in Maine to get ready for. Ill post the finished gun in a few weeks.

That is gonna be pretty when you finish. Looking forward to seeing it.

Two of the finer things in life. Longbows and longrifles! Two of my new favorites.
-
I agree with you. Beautiful rifle. What did you use on the butt plate to age it?
-
I used Laurel Mountain Forge barrel brown and degreaser.
-
That sure turned out nice. :OK

Had a pretty day to shoot. 3'' dot at 25 yards. The wild one was a ragged patch that cut funny and I drove it on down anyway and it shot crazy.
-
Nice shooting rifle! You did a very good job!

Thanks Leroy

That's a fine lookin' rifle, and a dinner of squirrel, way to go.

Heavens to mergatroid! I better not show that photo to the new great horned owl I am working with. He's bat-house crazy for those tree rats!
