Title: Sinew-backed Yew D/R with Cobra Skins
Post by: upstatenybowyer on April 21, 2018, 02:27:54 pm
Here's the scoop...

She's made from billets (my first attempt at splicing).

She's all heartwood except at the handle where I left some sapwood for thickness.

One moderate coarse of sinew with tanned cobra skins over that.

I've shot her through the chrony about a dozen times and she's averaging in the mid 180s with a 500 grain arrow.

60" ttt
48# at 27"
Whitetail antler overlays
Mahogany and Paduk riser
Paduk shelf
Mother of Pearl strike plate inlay

Thanks as always for looking.  :)

Good work. That splice looks tight for a first. Once you get the hang of splicing your wood world opens right up. All kinds of people have billets around they wont use. And you can usually buy them cheap.

You said it Pearl. Now I find myself oogling trees I would have never had eyes for before. Never thought about folks willing to sell/buy billets. Many thanks.

Thanks Ed. I was trying to mix up the aesthetic a bit. I'm glad you like it.  :)

Thanks rps3 and Goat.

Thank you kindly my friends.

Springbuck, first I cut the billets to 2"x2"x32" on the bandsaw. Then I cut the splice joints. After that I removed sapwood, roughed them out to near-bow dimensions, used dry heat to add the reflex, and glued in the deflex. Lastly, I added sinew and waited about a month. From there it was tillering and adding the frosting.

Bob, I think yew is one of the easier woods to splice and I owe DC a lot of gratitude for posting threads on the topic. I'm happy you dig the bow.  :)

Thanks paul, your bows have always been an inspiration.

I'm glad you like her BJ, I sure hope we get to work on some together someday.  )P(

Sure hoping we'll get together at Marshall this year Jeff. Been really looking forward to seeing you there. Hope your still planning on making the trip. Sounds like a bunch of new first timers again. It should be a very special meet. We have to plan another group picture.

I must have done something right if all of you very respectable bow guys like her. Thank you all for your comments.  :)

If anyone is wondering what's up with the sinew wrapped at the tips, I originally had a layer of Paduk and a layer of antler glued on them. I cut too deep into the antler when I filed out the nocks and when I braced her the tension pulled the string ends through the overlays and delamed the yew.

I fixed this by gluing the yew back together, wrapping with sinew, and putting extra thick pieces of antler on the tips. Not the best looking fix, but functional nonetheless.

Thanks everyone!

High Desert, I got these skins on that really big online retailer for less than $50. They were like 6' long w/the head! They're tanned, not fresh dried, but for the price I couldn't resist.

I was puckering big time for the first 50 shots or so Don, but I gradually started trusting it. Of coarse now that I've said that I'll probably get a good wack in the skull  (--)
