On my way out the Door.....2008 Spring Season opens at daybreak.........Wish Me Luck......and feel free to brag on you trophies as you get them........ got my call in my Mouth and the truck is warming up.....it's a Balmy 31 degrees this Morning.....won't have to worry about the Skeeters like last Spring Season!!!
-
good luck to ya. hope you get a nice buzzard.
how many hunters get a season that lasts the whole season and not just 5 days, like here in mn.
our season is a total of 8 weeks long but that is broken down into 5 day weeks, and you have to put in for the lottery and hope you get picked for gun,or you can buy an over the counter bow permit fot the last two weeks(just one or the other cant do both). i here tell that some state that dont have lottery but just over the counter purchase of tags allows hunters to hunt the whole season or untill they tag out, that would be so sweeeeeeeet.instead of being as pressured to kill a bird as the birds are trying not to get killed. a 5 day season sucks just because you cant always wait for the one you really want sometimes you just have to take what comes in front of you.
so to all you hunters who get more than 5 days to hunt, cherish it and hope you hold out for that trophy bird, because we all know anyone can call in and kill an excitible 2 year old bird, its those 4 year old ones that sneak in without a sound that are tough.
PEACE, AND GOOD LUCK
Tim

Well I got out to Plum Creek this Morning at 7:45....It's only 28 miles from the House...I didn't want to waste the Money on Gas at 3.25 a gallon to drive 120 miles to shoot a Turkey..... I called and called for Hours ....and got one Tom to answer Me....but then He quit....so I started to Hunt Rocks for Cowboy and a few others....I got a Backpack full of Rock and still hadn't heard any more Turkey...so I started to head back to the Truck....I was walking down a Trail ...when a bout 50 yards ahead of Me I see 7 Birds run across the Trail and head up a little Hill....I ran up closer to where they disappeared...and started to Belly Crawl towards them.....I could hear them clucking...and then a Tom gobbled .....I was almost to the Top of the Hill when I seen a Tom and 3 Hens....the Tom was all fanned out and courting these Hens...and was oblivious to Me....so I nocked an Arrow...started to draw as I got up on one Knee....I let loose the Arrow....and caught the Tom right at the base of the Neck.....the Arrow went almost all the way through and was flopping around with the Bird on the Ground.....and right at that moment another Tom came running over and mounted the first one on the Ground....and started to spur the Crap out of Him.....So I nocked another Arrow.....and Hit Him right underthe Wing....He flew off about twenty yards and hit the ground with a thud....Two Birds with Two Arrows....within 30 seconds.....Gawd it don't get better than that!!!!!! Too bad thats the end of Hunting Season for Me....no more Tags!!!! Good Luck Guys...........dang am I pumped!!!! Ohh.....by the way I almost forgot the Important stuff.....It was my newest Bow....the Python Backed Sycamore Bow I posted last Month....with 125 grain Magnus Snuffer Broadheads

Nice birds, Yank. To bad your season is over though. We have a fall season that last from October till mid Jan. And a Spring season that is 5 weeks long. We can take 2 birds in the Fall and 2 in the Spring. And the best part is we don't have tags, just the honor system. ::)
-
awesome yankee thats awesome two birds. good hunt sir, :) good hunt.

VERY WELL DONE MY FRIEND!!! TN season opened today. I got one early this morning and guided two of my buddies to a couple later in the day. It was the best opening day i've ever had. Of course, we used shotguns. One day i'll graduate up to turkey hunting with my selfbows.
Congrats again, Saw Filer

This Federal Land I Turkey Hunt...is Archery Only for Turkey....except for one small area that is Shotgun and Archery....but that is way too Crowded....since less than 2% of the Land in Texas is open to the Public....there are way too many Guns for my taste!!!
-
way to many guns is right. me nand my dad are gonna pack back in for the gobblers instead of bein 100 yards off the road. too many guns for me too.
-
That's an awesome story. I went behind my house and had 6 Toms and 13 hens on me by 7:00. I was about to take a tom when I saw another come running in with a beard twice as big. He was a HOG so I got greed and waited for him but they began to move away. I waited too late and finally took a 25 yard shot but the arrow went right over his back. They left so I went to another farm.
When I drove up to this farm I could see 32 in the pasture so I used the terrain to get around behind them and set up a blind and 4 decoys. They didn't show up with an hour so I eased up to where they were about 200 yards away and across a pasture fence. I got behind a tree and hit the call. 7 Toms immediately answered me with gobbles in unison. I was fired up and hit it again. They immediately began my way and answered every time I hit the call. In about 25 min. they were to the fence but would not cross the fence. They ran up and down it gobbling and strutting but never crossed it to give me a shot.
No birds today but a lot of excitment!

AWESOME!!!!
that is what happens in my dreams and only in my dreams for me.
contrats. a single double thats awesome, onlything that could have been cooler, would of had been to differant subspecies.but that is just unbelievable.
i just hope i get half that lucky this year.
they sound like they are probably two year old birds, from differant hatches of the same year, thats why the diff in spur and beard length.
-
Yankee, what sailordad said and when you get the spurs to start curving like a hook it is an older bird. 3 or 4 year old they don't survive much more than that. You can also hold the beards up to the light and look for the amber color in the tips. The less amber the older the bird. A 3 or 4 year old will have very little to none. Jakes, 1year olds have very short to no beards and bumps for spurs, 1 year old or less. Osceola's don't gobble, and when they try it sounds like they are choking.

I dont know how to judge age on a Rio Grande....I know that they are different than the Easterns I grew up with...which are a lot like the Oceolas in Florida.... except the Oceolas are smaller than the Easterns
-
The same as Sailordad and I just posted. They are all the same, some just bigger.
-
Dang, cool. That sounds like a once in a lifetime situation. Great shootin. :)
-
In the Texas Panhandle....with it absence of Public Land....I am calling myself Blessed that I got this Chance to get two Toms in a single Season...let alone Day....and the kicker was....I was giving up and going Home when it all come together!!

Wonder how many turkeys have been harvested with sycamore?
I dont know...but I know they taste good when roasted with Mesquite!!!! >:D >:D >:D
-
Good Job Tejas, you can't get them if you are not in the field. The part of Texas where you are has some awsome opportunities and neat country' The lack of public lands is the only worst thing about it. Congrats again on your traditional harvest. Kenneth
-
Nice job Yank. Justin

congratulations. nice birds and excellent shooting.

I just got home from hunting the South Zone's last weekend. Got a 21# Osceola with a 10 1/4 " beard. And 2 hogs. Sorry, no pictures, it was a Benelli and 44 mag hunt. With the short time I've had to hunt this year, I'm taking it anyway I can get it.

-
I don't believe that Stone is legal at all in Texas....would have to look to make sure..... I just cant take a Chance at wounding an animal ....I aint good enough to chance using Stone Points ....not yet anyways
-
only way we can use stone in minnesota is to pick up a rock and trow it at something, just dont get caught killing a critter with that rock you would get fined for that.
