It opened for me Chris. Always a busy time for me with it being fair week and sometimes wheat harvest to. Sure enjoyed the afternoon and night I spent there last year before it started. Was great seeing you, Paul, Greg, Sharon, Nate and Pappy's crew. Maybe I can sneak out for awhile again.

Its not far away now fellas. Not sure how much time I'll have this year. I may drive back and forth a few days, or just yank the camper over Thursday. It all depends on how momma is holding up.

Brian would you mind taping off that area east through the pines and to the south where I was last year? It worked great at fitting all my out of state friends in one spot. Thats if I cant get over to do it myself, I would appreciate it very much.  Ill stay in touch with you best I can via email.

Love to have you there Steve, not sure how far from Greenbay it is but can promise you will have a good time. Bring a bow and some arrows and we can spend some time in the woods flinging arrows. 11 days and I will be headed that way.

Id love to meet you as well Steve. I'm not aware of any Badger state shooters that come across the pond.

I'm hoping to stop in and out over the weekend. If momma is feeling good enough I MIGHT toss up my 1 man tent for a night. It all rides on her.

Made it to Elm Hall. Decided I'd set my tent up before dark. Good thing cause my tent poles weren't in the bag. Well I guess that's what Wally World is for. Picked up another one just like my other one. Except it's got poles. Just got it set up and my wife called. Said I got a package from Dbar. I think she's almost as excited as I am. Sure wish both you and those 4 Tigers were here Dbar.
Thanks buddy, almost want to go back home and see em, but I think I'm going to stay here awhile anyway.

Well I got home safe and sound. Great time as usual. I was up there from Friday night till Sunday morning so it was a short call for me. Some of the normal suspects in our camp we're not able to attend for much better reasons but the rest of us thought of you guys a lot and sure missed your presence. So I'll try to make a short story short, pulled in Friday night about 8:30 quickly set up my tent and even quicker grabbing a cold beer. Greg AKA badly bent /AKA MIA came over and I was showing some of the stuff I recently worked on. back in Marshall Clint had given me an ugly piece of Osage with some family history. I worked at thing over 10 ways from Sunday and ended up with the Hickory backed Osage bow that I posted not too long ago. I've been shooting this bow a lot and really liked it. To be quite honest it was the fastest bow I ever made. anyway I String it up and hand it to Greg and say "check it out this is the fastest bow i ever made". He pulls it back in about 24 in and it explodes. I'll bet I had at least 500 arrows threw it in the last month. Don't really understand it but anything happens. I'm just mad there wasn't at least another 10 people stand around to witness it. Would have been a great Campfire story. That's the after math in the first picture. The second few pictures are BJ thinking it's a good idea to shoot the deer across the river without the kids there to retrieve. And then the next picture is him realizing his boots are about 1 inch too short. Unfortunately this is all the pictures I took but always have a lot of great memories
Title: Re: Elm Hall 2018
Post by: bjrogg on August 05, 2018, 07:33:50 pm
That was for Bill. I know how much he wanted to shoot that deer across the river. I also know how much Paul wanted me to fall on my butt crossing it to retrieve my arrow.lol. That's why he had his camera ready for that shot.

I got there Friday afternoon. Ryan R, his daughter Lacey, Greg, Sharon and Nate were at the campsite. I visited with them for awhile then decided to pitch my tent. That's when I found out my tent poles where missing. I made a quick trip to Alma with Sharon. Got a new tent that did have poles. Got back and pitched my new tent.
I think that was about the time Greg asked if anyone wanted venison steaks. All hands went up and Greg started to slowly cook them over the campfire. I had some potatos, onions, zucchini, carrots and broccoli my wife had sliced up seasoned, buttered and wrapped in tin foil. I cooked them up over my grill. We ate till all we're full, but there was still a couple steaks and a few potatoes left.
Ryan asked if I'd like to shoot the course with him and Lacey. I said sure and off we went to shoot the east course. It was a beautiful course. Targets were set up in very realistic Hunting shots. About 8 targets in we caught up to Cindy, Bruce, Steve and their tribe. By the time we finished the last few targets were getting  a bit hard to see and the arrows ever harder. When we got back to Camp Paulsemp was there. All smiles as usual. He proudly showed us what was the fastest bow he ever made. It was a beauty. To bad it was in two pieces. With a even bigger smile on his face he told us the whole story. Them really fast ones are living on the edge Paul. Kinda like race cars, once and awhile they blow up.
We all sat around the campfire telling stories, laughing enjoying each other's company and the fire. We all turned in kinda late. That was the end of day one for me.

About that time Paul emerged from his one man popup. He asked if I wanted to shoot the course and off we went to the west course. We stopped at the office and got some coffee. Again it was a beauty of a course.

Thanks for posting pics, BJ. Feels good to see them and you guys with smiles.

Billy boy and I will be back one day, I can promise you that.

Pauly stopped at the house for coffee early Sunday morning on his way home (well out of his way)  and before I left back for the hospital. Again, a breath of fresh air for me. I love the guy and getting to spend an hour with him felt great and inspired me for the day. He has a way of making me relax a little and of course smile.

When we got to the deer across the river Paul told me they usually had a kid that would get your arrows. He said he wasn't going to shoot but it was a fun target. I told him I was going to shoot one for Bill. I shoot my arrow and just as I was guessing the water was about a inch over my boots. After I got across I told Paul he had to take a shoot. I should have left his arrow and took mine.lol I retrieved them both. He didn't give me a dollar, but he did buy me a breakfast.

PS Pearl was glad Paul went to see you. I know you two are really close. We all missed you a lot. I've got more pictures but out of time for now.

Yes as Knoll mentioned there where a few tense hours. When Paul and I got back from shooting the course he realized he was missing his wallet. Everyone helped look and finally Paul just decided to forget about it and drink a beer. We where all setting around when he found it. That I sure was a huge relief.
While we were sitting around Paul showed Knoll a bow he finished. I forget the poundage but Knoll jokingly said oh just right for me. Paul told Mike to flip it over and he noticed it was made for him.
Here's Knoll shooting his new bow.

Having just had his fastest bow he ever made blow up at the hands of Greg aka Badly Bent ,Paul decided to have myself and Greg give his donation bow a work out. I really liked it. Wasn't really fancy to look at but has some beautiful bends and was smooth as butter. Just perfect draw weight and it felt great in my hand. I don't know where it comes in as far as speed goes but it certainly is a thumper. I know it faster than the fastest bow he ever made.

It's also mine. Paul thought I spent to much on it. I don't think so. Bought $20 worth of tickets so I split them between Paul's bow and Ryan R's. I put a couple on Greg's but I already have a nice Badly Bent raffle bow. Thanks for donating them guys.

I got him good last night, Jon. Greg's grandson was asking Mike to go shoot, I said, "Hey Nater tater, you going shooting with grandpa Mike?". Even Carol gave a grin :).

I understand Nate got me REAL good Saturday as we were waiting in line for the "feast".
It was quite sunny and we had been standing in line for a bit. Then the announcement came that all was ready to begin the eating. Announcer was also thoughtful enough to say, "And if there's anyone 80+ yrs old who would like to move to front of line, now's the time to do so."

Nate turns to Greg (his grandpa), "Gee, in couple years Mr Mike will be able to go to head of line!!"   ::)

KIDS!! ::)

While we were sitting around Paul showed Knoll a bow he finished. I forget the poundage but Knoll jokingly said oh just right for me. Paul told Mike to flip it over and he noticed it was made for him.

What a fab-shooting stick it is!

Paul posted this bow a week or so ago and I was eager to see it at Elm Hall. Little did I know that it would be in car with us as we left another fun Elm Hall week.

Thank you, once again, Paul Semp!

Sure wish you could have stayed longer to Stix. It sure does go to fast. I'm sure glad I got a little more time to spend there and Greg & Sharon are awesome camp buddies. My cooler went home almost as full as it left. They we're always feeding me.

After Paul found his wallet and Knoll got his new bow. Greg, Paul, Knoll and I shoot the east course. It was getting pretty warm and you didn't want to stand in the sun, but it was ok in the shade.
Here's some pictures on the course.

The courses they set up are my favorite anywhere I shoot. Very realistic and fun. That gravel bar shot is always a fun one, especially if its 90.

You guys look like you had a blast! Thanks for picking on mike for me.
Paul i had almost the same thing happen to me at mojam a few years ago. I was letting someone shoot a selfbow of mine and it blew on his second shot. We got a picture somewhere. Perfect timing. I felt so bad! I had shot that bow  for three days prior all night long. Sometimes they just give up! I cant wait to see the mikes new bow.

Thanks for putting up all the pics. Its almost like im there!

Well this shoot went by way too fast. I had a real good time visiting with everybody and shooting the courses. These 3d courses are some of the best I have shot with lots of challenging shots and great targets. I think my daughter has got hooked on 3d shooting. She drug me around the courses a good part of the day Saturday. She even gave me a run for my money on a few of the targets.

It was really nice shooting with Lacey and you Ryan. You were good camping buddies to. Lacey is going to be giving you some stiff competition in the very near future. That's just so great to see.

After Shooting the course Paul, Knoll and I shoot the money bear. It a bear target with money attached to it. It's about a 85 yard shot. Knoll and I were both very impressed by how flat Paul's bow shot. None us hit the bear, but I think we might have scared him a little.
By now it was getting uncomfortably warm. We went back to camp and played chase the shade with our chairs. Well I used my bucket having forgot my chair. Carol told us some really good Knoll stories as he tried to remember what their wedding date was. After a couple engineering guesses he got the right Month which actually seemed to surprise Carol.  Knoll tide some nock points on his bow string and took it to the practice range. We looked over the silent auction items.
Soon it was time for the feast. We got in line and had some sweet corn while we waited. After awhile we decided to just wait in the shade. The sun was getting uncomfortable. I'm sure Pearl wouldn't have liked it just like me. While we were sitting there Matt W approached us and asked if we would participate in the 21 arrow salute. We got our bows.
Now the line was moving along and soon we all had our bellies full. Not that they ever got empty. They presented jeb a award. I'm sorry I couldn't really hear but I know it was for his service. Then they started the raffle, silent auction and door prizes. About half way through they did the 21 arrows salute. We were arranged in three rows of seven archers. On command we let our 21 whistling arrows sail high over the flag. Then one lone archer shot a silent one. It was nice thought and gesture.
Then more door prizes and finally the raffle bows. The first bow ticket drawn was mine for Paulsemp's HHB. I was very happy. Next was Mark from Marshall. I don't know his last name, but if you've been to Marshall you know him. That made all of us happy. Mark lost everything in a fire so it couldn't have gone to a better home. I believe it was a lady that got RyanR's which was the prettiest of the group. I'm sure it got the most tickets.
Then it was back to camp. We told and listened to lots of good hunting stories. Some stories from our younger days that can't be repeated and just enjoyed each other's company. I think everyone was a bit tired out from the heat and everyone had a busy day ahead. We broke up the party just a little earlier but the quality of time was great.
That was the end of Saturday

Thanks for the paly by play buddy. I know exactly what it was like now, even the heat. Denny always comes up with something interesting to do with arrows, the 21 arrow salute was his idea this year Id bet. Did he have long hair and a kilt?

Sunday morning everyone was up early. Paul wanted to go see Pearl before he had to leave home. I really wanted to go to but felt these two close friends needed some time. It didn't take Paul long to pack. He was traveling light. Ryan and I watched him drive away already missing him. Then Ryan an Lacey packed up to. I watched another good friend drive away. Greg was making coffee and didn't ask if I wanted a cup, he just poured me one. Next thing I had a nice breakfast plate setting in my lap. Greg and Sharon are really great camping buddies and I really like visiting with both of them. We visited for a hour or two and I decided to pack up before it got to hot. Said good bye to Bruce,Cindy and their tribe and the rest is just a ride home through the country.

Thanks to everyone that helped put this shoot on. It really is a fantastic course. It really puts you in the hunting mode.
Thanks Greg, Sharon, Ryan, Lacey, Paul, Knoll and Carol for the great company.
See you soon, but not soon enough

Yes, Dusty boy was there. He seemed a lot more comfy than he was this spring, but still a few kinks to work out.

Yes Clint, Sharon is pretty determined to get that dog comfortable camping. She said by Marshall he was going to be good or they'd have a different dog. She said " I didn't say we'd get rid of Dusty, but we'd have a different dog" if anyone can put that dog at ease it's going to be Sharon.
