Title: Milkweed pod season!
Post by: Stickhead on June 19, 2018, 07:25:34 pm
This is my favorite wild veggie, and it’s peaking now in VA.  Snip ‘em, rinse and boil ‘em.  A little salt and butter, and you can’t beat ‘em.  (Just leave some buds for the Monarch butterflies.)

I harvested and tried these yesterday.
I boiled twice.
tasted like a cross between wax beans and asparagus.
added butter and a touch of minced garlic.
delicious!!

So I have to ask, why boil them twice?

Dave.
i know that the sap is bitter.
i done it to make sure it was all gone from the pods.
unfortunatlly i think the pods are too far along to do this now.
next year i will definatelly try this again and try only boiling once.

I have more milkweed in my yard then I could possibly eat, and more coming up everyday. I'm pretty sure I'll have plenty to eat for a while. I'll be trying this soon. Maybe tonight.

So, I had some last night. Only boiled once, but did soak them in cold water for about 5 minutes. No bitter taste. They were yummy. I have 2 daughters, one is suspicious of darn near everything I put on the table, the other is more than happy to eat experimental foods with me. She loved them, said they were yummy and will eat them again.

Just starting to bud today. I picked a baggie full. Rinsed them in cold water a couple times then boiled, drained and added some butter. Not to bad.

Not sure about the milkweed out here, but I got a bunch of zucchini and yellow squash coming in!  If I verload real bad, I have a friend who feeds her dogs raw food, and they like zucchini!.  Won't be foraging much with the bum knee, but there is a bunch of choke cherries just down the road!

Yah I don't care for most caned vegetables. I do like caned peas. Otherwise I'll gladly take fresh and often time raw. I love asparagus and if it taste anything like asparagus I had to try it. I don't think it's exactly like asparagus, but it is pretty tasty. Even my daughter thought it was good.
