So I have wanted to make a scalloped bow for some time now. So I rooted through the stash and found a nice piece of os. It was a good 3" diameter piece at 57 1/4" long, split and seasoned for 2 years. It's not finished yet. But here it is so far. My take on an Iroquois bow from jim hamms book. 70# @26. I will get some more pics up when it's all dolled up. Thanks for looking- brendan

Wow, That's awesome! You got everything out of that stave. nice bend.
-
That is a great looking bend! How does it shoot?
-
Beautiful bow and awesome pics"..
-
Thanks guys! I have only shot 20 arrows or so with it yet. It flings them pretty good. It still needs some minor tweeks, and a light toasting after I shoot it a bunch more. Cheers- Brendan

Hi Brendan - very nice bend on a just simple bow - simplicity is an art of itself and os seems to be an interesting bow wood, we dont have in europe. Could you short explain what we see on the last pic? Cheers Simon
-
Very cool bow! Great bend on that one!! Nice work 8)

Sweet bow Brendan. Love those scallops and beautiful tiller. Smik might seem like a simple bow but pretty sure it's much more complicated than your first glance tells you. That last picture is front view of scallops. They've got to make getting that nice of a tiller a real challenge. Can't wait to see that one finished up and in the BOM.

It just occurred to me how hard OS is, how did you carve the scallops?
-
....I just absolutely dont understand what these "scallops" are good for and where they come from?...maybe a picture from the other side of the bow in the final presentation will help me...cheers
-
Thanks Dave! Don I used a draw knife/half-time rasp to rough them out and a half-round file/scrapers to finish.
Sim it's just a native american design similar to this one. Cheers- Brendan

thanx brendan - got it and looking forward to final pics.
-
I love it! Those scallopes look great and nice draw weight too

Very good job, I have found most features on a bow will have a purpose other than decorative, not in all cases of course. Be kind of cool to put our heads to gether and try to figure out what these scallops could have possible been used for.
-
Cool. Nice job Brendan :OK
-
Thanks Leon, Jeff and Steve.
Steve the only things I could come up with other than decoration/artistic purpose(kinda look like waves on the great lakes), would be a weapon in themselves, or an aid in tillering. I think that as long as the scallops are all evenly spaced it helps to see your bend. Cheers- Brendan

You built one heck of a nice bow.
-
Awesome bow.
I reckon if you had a bendy boomerang arrow, you could do a trick shot and shoot the ciggy' out of your mouth. That would be impressive. Seriously though, nice work on the bow.
-
Thanks Rob, Hamish. It really means a lot!
P.s. I really should quit smoking, just noticed it. Cheers- Brendan

Very nice!
-
great looking bow! What a great bend on that thing! Those scallopse are a nice touch.

So I finished this up with some acrylic paint, and beeswax finish. I have a micmac heritage so i chose these colors. The colors are sacred micmac colors red- strength and power, yellow- the sun, blue -for the water and sky and green- for the colors of nature. Finished it up yesterday and went stumping this morning. Heres a few more pics. The tiller didnt change any so i dont have a new fd. Cheers- Brendan

And a few more

Nice bow. Scalloped bows ranks high on my list. Also I always think its interesting to hear the reasons behind a design or decoration. Thanks for sharing about the colors. Mike
