Someone just asked me if I was still on here! So I thought I' should post up my latest.
It's from a Yew stave that was given me as a roughed out bow (bark still on which was a good thing) that had been started but wasn't going to get finished, the tips had been roughed out alarmingly slim while the rest of the bow was only just flexing when tested floor tiller style.
The stave was only 61.5" long so not much to spare, but it so happened a bloke wanted a primitive with a 26" draw and this looked just the job.
There's a good few knots and an area where a cross branch had been chaffing, which gives it some character.
40# @26" it's shoots fast and straight.
I knew it was a good bow when I took the first test shot, 10 yards, smack into the middle of a 2" square of white foam plastic, I took two more shots, they both hit... at that point I quit 'cos I was beginning to scare myself :o
It lobs my standard 400gn field arrow about a yard short of 180 yards, it would be interesting to have tried a decent flight arrow.
I shipped it to the guy and got this Email back with a picture of a nice tight group on a target :)
Bow arrived 30 minutes ago. Set nock. Warmed it up .
Third end 20 yards on a 40 cm face.
Beautiful bow shoots like a dream. Into the woods tomorrow and some 3ds. Many thanks Derek.
Cheers

That's a beaut Del, love it

Here's the FD shot (low res as it's grabbed from a screen shot), gives an idea of the size of the bow. Sorry 'bout the legs :-[
Del
BTW. The white dot on the lower nock is a bone peg that I turned on my little lathe. Just did it on a whim to look cool, my regular bow which is similar has a silver pin in the bottom nock where it came unglued once and someone suggested I put a nail in it... so I did :)

Real nice bow sir. That is one style I have not tried with yew, I really need to. I always make them narrow and deep.

Yeah Del, that is a beaut! Looked at the full draw like 10 different times, something about it is sooo sweet...

Wow! She's a beauty! That limb rub spot gives me the heebeegeebees, how can it hold together, it MUST blow u...oh yeah, it's yew. Yew is special. Yew doesn't need to follow the rules!
Thanks for sharing, Derek!

I love that look! What is the finish on it? I like how the sapwood still looks like it should. When I use truoil, or any oil based finish, it always ads that yellow hue.

Sweet as a nut! :D

Cheers guys.
I filled a lot of knots, but tried to leave the plugs peeping though the back for some character. I carefully cleaned round the rub spots especially under the edges, it seemed pretty sound but I put some low viscosity CA in there to hopefully stop the sapwood lifting there.
The great thing about the stave was the thin sapwood that allowed me to let the bark pop off for the most part and give me a good clean back.
In the pic I'm, probably pulling 27", the owner only draws 26.5" so I've tested it to a good safety margin. :)
