I've started a new project that will be my offering for the raffle table at the Tenn. Classic next spring. Last year someone suggested a buffalo hunt and I thought it was a good idea. I started this last week and so far it's going well. I'm sure it will change quite a bit before it's done but ya gotta start somewhere.

That's gonna be cool Pat (A) :OK ! Bob
-
Now that is going to be cool, maybe I can win one of them someday. :-\ Thank you Pat for all you do to support us , very much appreciated. :)

Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to watching it progress. These things have a life of their own.
Hawkdancer, it's paper mache, paper towel roll stuffed with plastic grocery bags for the horses body, wire for the man's shape and tissue paper and white glue. The buffalo will start out with a styrofoam egg.
-
Awesome! They already look alive. Tonka! Tonka!

Cool project Pat.Ought to look really nice.I've got a sliver of horn for ya if you want for a horn bow for him to hold if you want. The horn would be black though.
-
Ed, thanks for the offer. I was thinking about a horn bow but looking for a piece of sheep horn or possibly elk antler so it can be somewhat authentic. I have elk antler. Possibly sinew backed, 5 curve bow.
Zuma, you may have just named the piece for me. :OK
-
Can't wait to see it finished.
-
That ought to be cool, Pat.
-
nice project :OK
following closely (-P

That's way cool Pat. Keep us posted on the progress! (-P

Well when I suggested a buffalo hunt I was thinking hundreds of buffalo ,lots of horsemen etc. By gosh you are on your way to a killer display. Let us have a peek from time to time.
Not Pat B
-
Hey not Pat B, glad you gave me the idea. Let me see how one of each works out first. ;)
-
I've done a little more work. The horse and rider are almost done with their basic shape, still have to dress and paint and add a few details. I got the basic bison shape. Will add legs then more details. Here are a few more pics...

I think the correct Lakota for bison is "Tetanka" but that isn't one of the languages I'm real familiar with! Btw, the locale for the movie was shifted to the Lakota because the casting dept. could not find enough native Cheyenne speakers! Minor point! Too much culture being lost!
Pat, How about a progress photo ( build along?) (lol)
Hawkdancer
-
Thanks BJ. More to come...
Jerry, I'll investigate the Lakota so I can get the horseman's cloths and decorations right when that time comes. I like the word "Tetanka" and will use that as the title for this piece.
I'll also try to document some of the processes for you I go through making these pieces.
My wife does give me technical advice as to proportion, techniques and coloration. She's an artist and has been doing paper mache figures for many years. I appreciate all the input she gives and the results are the affects I'm looking for in these pieces.
-
OK, Jerry. Here is what the bison looked like a few days ago. Styrofoam eggs and balls with floral sticks attaching them. After shaping and covering with strips of news paper, tissue paper and diluted white glue the resulting figures emerged. The toilet paper roll stuffed with plastic grocery bags is what the horses body started out as. With tissue paper and white glue, along with floral wire for the legs is where it is now.

What about the hump? ;)
-
Perhaps if I were a bit younger >:D
Zuma
-
I put the legs on the bison today and will shape them and the hips tomorrow. When that dries I'll post pics. Will be ready for some detail work soon. It's shaping up pretty good.
-
Waugh! The hump goes to the horseman to give to the widows and orphans in camp, or the pretty girl who he is courting's father! Looking good, Pat!
Hawkdancer

Still watching Pat. (-P

I've got the bison looking like a bison. This is about how they will be set up on the final piece. Will do a little more filling in on the legs then will add the fur and horns and the same for the horse and rider. . Here's a few more pics...

Pat,
That is developing into one hellacious piece of art!
Hawkdancer
-
That looks amazing so far. You are certainly a man of many talents!
-
Thanks guys. I did some more filling in and shaping up the bodies to give them motion and a bit more realism. I still have to add the hair and manes and tails then comes the initial painting. Things will jump then.
-
OK, here is the bow.
-
Do you do all the shaping while it's wet or do you use a rasp or something when it dries? It's looking way cool!!
-
DC, on the base forms(styrofoam) I shape it with a serrated knife or sand paper. Once I have that basic shape I shape the tissue wet with watered down white glue like modeling clay then cover that with tissue paper to smooth it out. Sometimes I have to go back and shave off an area that doesn't look right, a hump, etc. then lay more tissue paper over that.
The bow is a piece of osage I chased a ring on(wish it was all that easy ;D ) then thinned it down to that one ring, carved the back profile then with a candle I heated it to give it the bends in the right places. I'm going to sinew back the bow. The arrow on the bow now is a tooth pick but I will make arrows for it.
-
Looks real good! Coming along nicely!
Hawkdancer
-
One strand of sinew? Wouldn't it be nice it they were all like that :D
-
It won't be much sinew, that's for sure.
Thanks Jerry.
-
Great start Pat
-
Thanks for sharing this with us Pat. I'm really enjoying it. (-P
Always looking for a new hobby.

Got a bit more done before the painting begins. There is still a lot more detail work to be done but the initial painting really helps me see what else is needed. These are the last pics before the painting begins...

-
Thanks guys. I love doing these, as a matter of fact I already have plans for the next one.
-
That turned out great.
Is that a deer in the background or your target?
Thanks Leroy
-
Unique beautiful display.I like it.It says lot just on it's own without words.I imagine investigation into pictures for the display might have had to be used or did you go from the hip or your own imagination?
Ready for the sneak peek of your next project too.
-
Ed, I do a lot of research on line for running horses, running bison, etc, print them out to use for the subtleties and details.
Stoker, that's a deer target that has become a birdhouse, not my choice. ;D
-
Amazing work Pat. You definitely have a talent for sculpting. I'd be proud to own a piece of your artwork.
-
I've been looking forward to this. The detail on the buffalo is outstanding. Well, the whole thing is just outstanding. Way to see it through Pat. )P(
-
Clint, it could possibly be yours for $2 if they pick your ticket. ;)
I was very proud of the bison. It came out quite well.
The osage bow has 3 strands of sinew on thye back.
-
That a fantastic piece! There should be a lot of tickets sold for that!
Hawkdancer
