Title: Christmas Trade
Post by: Trapper Rob on August 04, 2018, 08:44:15 pm
It's getting that time who's in this year.
It can be gathered stuff like supplies or something you made but nothing bought from the store.
I'll leave it up for a few weeks then I'll draw names.
We'll start shipping Dec. 1st & lets try to be done shipping by Dec. 31st this year.
When you PM me your name & address make sure you leave me know if you want US shipping only.
Make sure you also post your draw length & weight  because some people make bows to send.
I know I'm missing some stuff so any questions just ask myself or somebody will answer them.

Hi there,
This time I will fail! The reason is, that the last two times were very boring. Two years ago my trade item from the US arrived, but the package was very damaged.
Last CT nothing arrived.... I`ve heard that it should have something to do with the new government in the US- not to deliver things to Germany. Seems like a new form of "Cold War", if this should be correct!
Hope your trade items may find the way!
Regards Uwe

Use,
Maybe you folks across the Pond can organize an EU division of the trade.  No point in letting politics put a damper on the season!

Sure, thats what I`d written somewhere in the forum`s behaviour rules and I agree completely with this! Politics is something what I hate most!
I only expressed what somebody told me a few weeks ago, if true or not.
Depending on the mentioned reasons in my former post, I would have liked to have a buddy in Europe, wrote it into my "in"- post, if I remember it correct, but It seemed nobody from the continent was in.
Regards Uwe

seeing as how a lot of folks that have thrown their hat in are quite accomplished at making bows, is there a minimum skill level required here?  Is it just for bows or can we also make other stuff, like quivers, haversacks, whatnot?  I'd like to be in, and make a bow, but my skill is at the 'I'm still learning and breaking a lot' phase.

Oh - forgot, when you say "not something bought from the store" - if I make a haversack I bought the canvas to make it, but I will sew it.  Does that count?

It aint just bows, it doesnt even have to be archery related. I make bbq sauce, i seen a guy who raises bees ship honey, literally anything is ok. And your habersack would be fine and greatly appreciated by anybody im sure. Make whatever you are comfortable with.

People usually post some pics of what they've received, so you might want to check out some of the previous years to get an idea of the things people send out. But like Sleek said, it's pretty open.  Just have fun with it :)

I am wondering if people could post their draw length and weight, plus any things they may enjoy in this trade.  I feel most competent making a matched set of arrows for people, but I have to have an idea of what they would be shot out of to do it well. If you would prefer something else, that is great too.

Here is my info
 50-55# @ 29" (right handed)
-I love raw materials, as I don't have many of my own
-I am learning how to knapp, but I am not good yet.  I have only ever worked obsidian, so a couple small pieces of chert or something would be cool
-anything hand-made craft is wonderful--it is like getting a piece of someone else's soul (does that sound creepy?)--hand made stuff is always beautiful.

In reality I just get happy when a box shows up in the mail. . . :D

OK, here goes. I got this possible bag and another similar bag done this weekend waiting out Hurricane Florence. It's made from leather I got at the Tenn Classic last spring. The bag is hand(saddle) stitched and I use a natural edge of the hide for the front flap and the flat front pocket. It also has a pocket inside. The knife is one that Dylan made for me just recently and I added the handle scales, deer antler as is the closure on the front flap. The shoulder strap is adjustable.
The pic of the inside is the other bag but they are both made the same.

Trying to get. Time to hunt turkeys, finish the hickory bow, make some shoot arrows, get ready for 2nd rifle deer season, rehab my hip, and brainstorm the Christmas trade.  I'm thinking maybe a fancy arrow kit box and adding some stuff to make it interesting(ok, maybe not so fancy), just 4 sides, top and bottom! >:D

Sleek, boo is a grass and will quickly deteriorate if left in the yard. It should be stored in the dry so fungi doesn't attack it.

I’m doing the same. I’m getting caught up on projects and ready to start putting something together. Just not quite sure what yet. I’m debating on a fully finished bow, a tillered but unfinished bow, a stave or two, making a something, or a bunch of materials. There’s still a little time, but not a lot.

One of our favorite things to do is sit around a fire.  We often cook over a fire and also roast plenty of marshmallows.

I am still trying to figure out what to work on.  I started working on a basket quiver but I am not happy with it.  I have a hickory bow i may keep working on and see how that works out.  The problem is I don't know the specs of my victim.  Maybe people could post their specs?

I’m game with anything that comes my way, even more so if it’s a handmade tool or thing. I’ll also be very happy with raw materials too. Though I’ve found that with gifted materials I use them far more sparingly and on more special projects. For bow wise or arrows, I drae 26.5” on average and like to shoot 60-70#. Though enjoy playing with lighter draws and can handle more.
I still want to gather more materials to send, but at the moment I’ll be sending some nicely snaky multiflora rose shafts (very tempted to keep them for using at group shoots, but will send them), buckbrush shafts and a few other things. I may send a raw but dried pelt along too. And who knows what else.

I'm going to build a set of dogwood arrows for my secret victim, the shafts are pretty straight and just about dry. I still need to make up fletchings and decide if I'm going to do target points or trade points.

Also planning to put together materials, probably a rocky mountain juniper stave, a bundle of dogwood shafts to build more arrows with, a mule deer antler.... See what else I have an abundance of  :OK

Got started on the box stuff!  Digging in a rock pile is hard work, and the darn bucket of rocks was heavy, genuine Native American rock pile, so I am told!  The woodworking should be neat when it is sanded and finished.  The other stuff may be beauty in the eyes of the beholder, or what the heck is that!?  Btw, my host's hired hand carried the bucket out to to the truck for me!

Paul, first ship date December 1., last ship date December 31.
With the Holiday season starting today things are going to go fast so if folks haven't started yet it's gonna be close getting finished and shipped on time.
Has everyone at least started their Christmas Trade gifts yet?

Got one pair of items almost finished and the second ready to start.  Natural stuff just needs to be assembled and packed.  Should be ready to ship in time.   Btw, I read there is a labor dispute within the Canadian Postal Service that could delay delivery.  The source recommended using commercial carriers as an alternative if your victim lives northwards!

Nice quiver Paul. I saw a couple you made at Elm Hall. I'm sure whoever gets that one is going to be very happy with it. We're done with harvesting but still working some long days and nights. Cleaning up extremely muddy equipment when it thawing and tillage when it's freezing. Santa's workshop should be starting up soon though.

Paul,
Real nice!  Looks ambidextrous (lol) :OK!  That is a cool gift!

BJ,
Maybe your own drive through "high pressure equipment washer" would help - unless, of course there doesn't happen to be a cab on that particular piece (lol) (lol) (R >:D!  That would be worse than going through a car wash with the windows down!

Sleek,
Wouldn't mind having the recipe.  I'm working on a sugar free recipe since Jacie is on the Keto/paleo diet.  Very low carbs and sugars especially!  I get a lot of grill time!

This recioe is going to ne marketed so, kinda a secret, but a keto sauce sounds interearing. Im gonna see if I can figure that ine out now. My wife is doing the paleo thing as well...

I'm about to make a new batch, modifying a base recipe I found online.  Add what I Like and leave out what I don't like to come up with the right "style" and taste, then see if it holds up to larger batches.  Test runs are very Small, the Keto/paleo sweeteners are rather expensive!  Have to see if I can get some through the commissary.

Hey, i may not be too far from my victim around Christmas. Soooo a very odd question, but here it is.

Would a hand delivery be ok? And... what if, just maybe, the gift was a puppy? My sweet girl had a litter, and i will have 4 to give away shortly after christmas. They are blue healer and australian mix. I have both the mom and dad, and the grandma and grampa dogs. They are a good breed.

Anyways, if you would be ok with the idea let me know,  so i can plan for it, and i would also have to let my recipient know its him so he can plan.

Sleek, if I had a ranch or farm, a heeler/Aussie might be neat! It would have fun at barn hunts, I bet!  A miniature wire hair dachshund would be even neater!  It would keep my dingbat border collie and the water spaniel in line!  Some kid would love one, though!

PO was closed yesterday and I didn't make it in time today. Maybe tomorrow. We'll see. Starting Saturday we may have record snow here. They are talking 12" to 20" in those three days. That's more than we normally get in a season. So if I don't make it tomorrow it will be mid week. I've been looking at this box for a while and I'm ready to ship it off.  ;)

I should be able to get mine in the mail next week if all goes as planned.  I am working on plan C right now and it is looking good.  Plan a was a basket quiver that just didn't look good.  Plan b was a bow.  After I figured out my guys stats (by a lot of stalking) I abandoned that project as what I was working on wouldn't work.  I am now working on a side quiver made from tanned whitetail leather.  I also have some other items sitting in my bench ready to go.

I got a text from my mom yesterday saying I had a package. So when I got off work I detoured off that way and found a box with an awesome quiver and knife inside. I’m definitely gonna put it to good use and use it until it wears out. It’ll probably take the place of the old coon hide I’ve been packing the last few years.

Thanks a bunch Steve,

Now to get my stuff packed up this weekend to ship out.

Well Santa's helpers finished up the PA Christmas trade present for my recipient. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it when the helper started it, but as it progressed along it started to grow on me. The Black Walnut they salvaged from a old pallet along with the small white tail Antler really worked nicely for a stand. The helpers markings (I think I've seen them somewhere before) really made it pop. I hope my recipient likes it to, or at least it grows on him.
Merry Christmas

That is a real nice piece!  What flavor rock is let?  I like the repurposed walnut, too!  I made myself a pistol stand out of roadkill oak dunnage years ago, only one metal screw holding the gate on, the rest is pinned with dowel rods and glue.  Still have some of the original boards to work.  That knife will. Burtonridr,
that’s from me. Those hickory billets have been in a barn loft for about 3 years so should be good to go. I grabbed the more interesting pair I had up there that would make a good bow.  The shoot shafts are multi flora rose that have been drying about 3 months. The fibers are yucca. There should be a ribbon of white silk in there about two arm spans long. Enough for 2-3 bows depending on length. I hope they are items you can make use of.

ohma2- I'm glad you like everything. I was worried that I wouldn't get it out in time due to my workload. Hope you're able to put it all to good use!  :OK

Damn. I thought I was bringing up the rear. I let my guy know i was late. I had it pretty much done quick, but work and a holiday travel really hurt my ability to complete and then ship. When you work 10 to 13 hour days, 7 days a week, the post office is hard to get to.

Communication makes the difference. Everyone understands life getting in the way. After all, that is the most important thing.
Non-communication is the culprit.   ;)
