I like that you got the long range flight scheduled in. I will be there on wed instead of thurs.
-
That's sooner than I expected. Still planning on making it. I'm just in Park city so just a couple hours.
I have a couple questions about the broadhead shoot.
1- Is 500 grains the arrow used for all bows? I've seen the numbers for 50# and less and unlimited and it seems like the heavier bows are not shooting 10gpp.
2- Can I bring my own broadhead arrow or have to use a standard arrow?
I'm sure I'll have other questions later.
Not going there with a plan on taking a win. Just want to see the event and shoot some broadheads over 200 yards from a primitive sinew backed juniper design.
-
Chuck, the broadheads weigh 450 grains for all bows and you do have to bring your own arrows. We measure the weight of your bow based on your longest arrow hitting the back of the bow. Make sure you weigh your bows this way so they qualify.
-
For the Friday and Saturday regular Flight shoot:
There are no minimum arrow weight requirements. The objective is to see how far you can fling an arrow. Make the arrows as sleek and clean flying as you can.
For the Sunday Broadhead Flight shoot:
Yes, bring your own Broadhead arrows as long as the weight is 450 or more grains. Any arrow length is fine as long as it qualifies for the weight division you are planning to compete in. No weigh-in is required for the Unlimited weight division, so arrow length does not matter in that case. If you wish to bypass the weigh-in process, then you can always choose to enter as Unlimited even if the draw weight of your bow is only 35#. If your regular arrows are a bit light, then we can add some weight easily enough.
If your arrow is a bit long for qualifying for a specific weight division, you have the option to tape a block of wood on the back side of your bow to help ensure it stops at or below the target draw weight. For example, if you are planning to enter the 50# and under, but your bow reads 50# and there is still an inch further draw left in the arrow, then tape a 1” thick block on the back of the bow to serve as a stop and you will be fine.

Thanks

Another question for the broadhead shoot. I remember hearing fast flight strings and not aloud but b-50 strings are fine??
For registration. Do I need to be there Thursday, or can I show up just for the weekend?
Thanks
-
Natural material only for the strings, if you choose to use a modern string you will compete in the modern class. I should have some extra string we could make you one up real quick. For the broadhead you could just show up on the weekend.
-
I noticed a slight discrepancy in your schedule! There are 31 days in August, therefore Friday is 31st August, not 1st September. Hate to miss payday! Have a successful shoot!

Thanks Steve, In that case sinew might be my fastest natural material.
-
I had heard in the past feathers on broadhead arrows need to be at least 1/2" high. I did not see that mentioned on the rules though.
-
They dropped the fletch requirements, it takes a certain amount of fletch to keep your broadhead under control anyway
-
Thanks
-
We dropped the fletching size requirements because it added complexity to the rules, was inconsistent between bow types, and often required that an archer refletch their regular hunting arrows just so they could compete. In other words, the fletching size rules didn’t make a better competition so it was dropped. Besides, fletching size is self regulating because too small, and the arrow Flight suffers. Too big, and there is excessive drag on the arrow. Just like regular hunting arrows, each Broadhead Flight setup is up to the archer to optimize for performance.

Anyone here yet? I am at KOA campground. Will check the flats to see if anyone is out there yet. Arvin
-
They should be arriving soon!
I had car trouble yesterday and needed a tow back home, so I won’t be there until Thursday morning. :(
See you soon!

I expect I'll learn a lot from you all on sunday. Maybe next year if I have the time I'll try the regular flight shoot too.
Question on primitive finishes. Right now my bows are treated with bear grease. I would think shellac, linseed, and tung oil would also be allowed?
-
Any natural finishes and glues are encouraged, but there won’t be an issue using modern glues or finishes unless it is done to such an extreme that it changes the character of the bow. For example, wood or other natural material impregnated with a synthetic resin would not be allowed. Natural material strings are required too. I always have an ample supply of silk and quality linen to help anyone who needs such a string.
Alan
-
Thanks again Alan. I will be picking up some of your string material but this year I'll be using my fastest elk sinew strings.
-
Elk sinew string = very cool! I’d love to see how that works. I haven’t ventured into sinew string making yet. I bet it is a lot of work!
Alan

Have a great shoot, everybody! Sounds like maybe a cool front will be coming through for the weekend.

where will results be posted?
-
Arvin got my 50# self bow broadhead record by a couple of feet. Chuck loffler showed up and established himself as true contender with some world class shots. The overall results will be posted on facebook flight shooting page.soon and most likely here but I think here he leaves out the non primitive classes.
-
I will post results this evening. We just made it back home late last night and I am back at work today. I will put a full summary on here.

Allen case got some shots off over a mile but didn't find some of his arrows. He is fast approaching Harry Drakes record. I predict 2 or 3 more years but wouldn't be surprised if it was this year.

Steve,
Thanks for your vote of confidence! I don’t know if I can live up to it, but enjoy the journey trying. I sure lostalot of good arrows in the soft soil this time out.
