A few months back, Wayne from True Shaft Archery sent me 2 doz. Sitka spruce shafts. I finally made some arrows from one dozen. These are 45#-50# spined shafts. I did the crown with white spray paint, the minimal black cresting with craft paint and sealed with spray poly. These have self nocks with sinew wrap. The fletching were attached with fletch tape then a sinew wrap fore and aft. The red guinea feather were added for decoration with sinew wrap. All sinew wraps were sealed with pitch varnish and the tracers are rabbit zonkers added with fletch tape.

BTW...6 of these will have trade points that Kevin is making for me. I'll post pics when done.
-
Fine-lookin' missiles, Mr Pat. More examples of workmanship for me to strive to emulate. :NN
How long are those shafts?
Out to 17-20 yds, do ya notice drag from the rabbit fur tracers?
Thanks for posting.
-
These shafts are 34" long. I will cut them down when I get the trade points.
The rabbit fur tracers will lay flat when shot and open up when the target is hit. I've never noticed any interference with them.
-
Those are some cool looking arrows Pat. what's your opinion on the spruce?
-
Haven't shot them yet, Paul, so I'll have to get back to you on that.
-
Nice work they look good
-
Those are some nice looking arrows Pat.
-
Those are nice ones......

Really nice looking arrows Pat. Wayne makes some nice shafts. You did right by them. Really like your color combination. Look forward to seeing Kevin's trade points.

Those are some nice looking arrows Pat.

Thanks guys.
Bill, I tried the marabou feathers but was not satisfied with the results. ??? I'll have to practice with them more.
-
Nice looking arrows! :OK Where did you get the bunny zonkers? The Easter Bunny usually leaves chocolate candy and colored eggs (B) >:D! Got to get some of those shafts from Wayne! Those are right in my spine range (lol)!

Nice Pat. Did you use rice grains for nock indicators?
-
I haven't added the nock indicator yet. I usually use a drop of TBIII, let it skin over and turn the arrow so the drop hangs down and let it set. Works pretty good.
-
Pat, very nice looking arrows! Forgive my ignorance, but what is a “zonker”
-
Way cool Pat - Sitka Spruce was Jay Masseys favorite shaft :OK ! Bob
-
Morgan, a rabbit zonker is a thin strip of rabbit hide/fur that is sold in fly fishing shops for making flies.
Thanks Bob. Jay is one of my archery heros. :OK
-
Nice arrows Pat. I love Sitka spruce
-
Nice arrows Pat!
Fur for tracers.... Might have to go get a few bunnies (SH)
-
Lot easier and less mess to buy a pkg of zonkers from a fly tieing shop for $3.50. They are already cut into 1/8" strips.

I have these arrows finished up and ready to bloody. The trade points are from Kevin Halverson. Thanks again Kevin. Finished arrows came in 2 at 506gr, 2 at 508gr, 1 at 511gr and one at 520gr. when I added the trade points, pitch glue, sinew wrap and pitch varnish to seal.

If only, BJ. ;D

Always love your arrows Pat! Them look like gooders! You've not shot them yet? How's that spruce for a arrow?
-
I shot the dozen a bunch with field points and picked these 6 for broadheads, Derik. Then I shot these, I always shoot a broadheaded arrow before I will hunt with it. They all shot well so I'll shoot each again and pick the order they will go in my quiver.
The spruce makes a great arrow. Very straight but a bit brittle and a bit light although with these broadheads these are all over 500grs.
-
Very cool lookin bullets... never used fletch tape before, how'd like it?
-
I like fletch tape just fine especially with the forward and rear fletch wrap.
-
Pat
if those shoot half as good as they look.
they will make meat for sure.
-
Thanks Kevin. The trade points are the icing on the cake. :OK
-
Nice looking arrows their Pat.

I worked these S spruce up over 30 years ago. I shoot them just about daily. I have never killed an animal with....whoops, a couple squirrels here and there and maybe a snake or frog. I got them from 3 Rivers and one of the twelve was no good and about 10 years ago I broke one stress checking them before shooting. It was beat up pretty bad and had wore a judo for most of its life. Good stuff!!

I love them Green feathers , but to bad they blend into the natural greenery.
