Title: Buck down
Post by: JW_Halverson on September 03, 2018, 12:16:05 pm
The shop where I work is next door to a custom meat market. They have another site where they process wild game, just not at this site. Still, during hunting season, I see folks drive up with game they need cut up.

This morning two very young boys drove up with this buck. The points are less than 3 inches from meeting in the middle.  Pity it was shot with a wheel bow, but still, these two young men did a good job tracking and retrieving.

In talking with them, it rapidly became clear that neither had the skills to cut it up themselves and with 90 degree temps today, they could not wait until a processor opens tomorrow. I sent them home with two 20 lb bags of ice and instructions to skin it out and packed in ice wrapped in a plastic tarp in the shade.

When I get off work tonite I will meet up with them and bring my knives and grinder.  To the victor goes the spoils, and it ain't spoiling on my watch!

Make sure they get their hands dirty JW. All our bucks are still in velvet. At least the ones I'm seeing.

Good job with the teaching moment JW.  That's a skill that they will use the rest of their lives.

Very cool, JW.  I got my first down here the second weekend of August.  A young buck missing an antler and got him on a 10 yard heart shot, stalking on the ground.  Cleaned him up post haste.  What a gift.

Our bow season...Zone A, in Florida, is the last week of July through August.  Sure was glad to have my brother in law's help getting him into the cooler within 2 hours.

Great eaching moment!  Looks like he just recently finishe "rub out" , still some blood on the antlers.  Whitetail, 6 point or 8 point?  Have to educate those boys about real bows >:D (lol). Bet they will remember this one for a long time!
