Title: Smag & Hedgehunter HHB 2018-19 Hunts
Post by: HH~ on October 25, 2018, 12:34:37 pm
Was shooting this bow before I went to Hawaii. Tried out a 30" footed cedar with a Magnus II and a 75grn woody weight. Told Pappy as we were shooting foam for BH tuning "have high confidence in this setup". Its working out well.
Knock off that 3D rust where they have you shooting at deer targets in bad. . . spots. Harvested two with it and picked up another bow and that thing jixed me. Put that thing away and would ya know the HHB was at it again.

Not really. These Ft Campbell deer (this one was) are small. Like stunted fish in a overpopulated pond. Sat 10.5hrs, moved at noon to a cedar thicket. Stayed in there rest of day. Right at last light a small band of turkeys were looking to roost nearby. Said "5 more min's" as I had a couple miles to hump out. As I thinking this I see these two squirts running all over the place like whippets! One just stopped in the right place. I shot straight down from 20ft. Arrow went thru deer and stuck in ground! Guess what? The arrow was still sticking out of deer!! See what I say by small! He took off and the Magnus came off shaft and the arrow was vertical in deer with no point. Need to get my point back outta ground!
Saw three or four tremendous bucks at checkin last night. There was a report a fella shot a nice one in 9B and he could not get it out the Fed fish cop was saying.

This shot was almost 90 degree entry/exit. BH busted off in ground, deer went 40yds. HHB has been a very consistent performer.

Veterans day harvest. HHB 66" 44 @28" Same tree I took the first button. Saw 4-5 bucks and several birdy doe's. One deer came in but offered not shot, a young no typical 5X8 or 9. He had a crazy right horn. If he makes the rifle season he going to be a hella deer next season. I would not think twice about taking him with SB for my last Statewide buck.
Had to leave this old gal in tree overnite with my assault pack Blk & Tackle. No coyote damage but I bet they were looking. Her entrails were creekbound so they may not have even found her.

Little luck don't hurt. The place I hunt is animal heavy. Have very high deer densities here in this part of Tenn. Last season was thread bare with selfbow for me. This year, seems like every few times I have it out I get lucky. My friend Ray and I boned her out and divied her up. Bones went to my friend down the way to freeze for dogs. We pressure canned 7 qts of meat for myself, Ray did a bunch at his house. We ground some burger mix and split the backstraps. Deer was dry doe and old I figgger. Not in the breeding pool any more. Either way everything from her tongue to her liver got used. Tail went in the fishing pile to be dyed later for rockfish jigs come April.

Had the HHB out for a late season hunt. First deer I had come in was a nice 5x4 or 4x4 but he had other deer on his mind. Had a shot at a small deer after a series of low doe grunts early. Shot under the small Texas strain deer at 20yds. Eased out of the stand around midday into a big cedar stand. Hit a nice blood trail from the day before and followed it to an empty blooded bed. While on that track I found a nice drop. Nice December day of hunting in Tennessee.

Went out on a Christmas Day stump shoot with the new bow. Still rubbing oil finish on and have a nice blue painters tape strike plate and shelf on. Killed some fine stumps.

Nice bow and great hunts!  Got to find a place to get in a bow hunt as well as gun season next year!  We have a surplus of Hunters, and deer tags are draw only, generally limited to 1 tag.  Off to Nebraska, I guess!  I think they are a bit more liberal with deer tags for bow hunting!  Carry on!

Nice bow HH. I went out with a bend through the handle I just got almost finished to. The deer are pretty nocturnal here now. They usually calm down a bit by now but still not seeing much. I do like the bow though and I'm thinking it might be my hunting bow for next year. It's always fun to give them a test hunt a season before. Usually find a few little things I tweak. Season is almost over here. Running out of time.

Got time for hunting left for deer here in Tenn. I have had a tremendous Selfbow season. A good Recurve and ML season. When its all done i will have hunted about 75-80 days for deer. Low for me but its been a screwy weather year, wet and warm.

Like I say all the time. Lots of things must go just right to harvest deer/elk with single string bows. Things must go almost perfect to do it with selfbows. If you look at all the things that can go wrong on the shooters end. Then look at the animal end and environmental factors it's just a hard deal. True as well, lots of guys grab a selfbow in the first month or so of the long season and hunt. Then,  not so much after that. I did hunt with recurve one day and got lucky. Felt strange shooting it for that one shot. Arrow went so fast I hardly saw it at all.
Like to get a nice spot and stalk hog here next month with this static. We'll see.

You got that right for sure HH. So many things that have to fall together and just one little thing of the many that can go wrong. I guess that's part of the reason it's so exciting. It probably helps to have a bit of success though. I might have a harder time sticking with it without knowing it isn't impossible. That's why I like to let people know it is possible. Sir you almost make it look easy. I know better though. That's a lot of time you put in hunting and I'm sure you put a bunch more into scouting and preparing for hunting to. It was more than just luck although it's always nice to have a bit of that to.
Congratulations again on a heck of a good season

Yer right.. I dont use cameras, bait or any of that Jazz. I sit on a stool manys hours just as an observer. Know what food sources are getting hit, depleted, and the ground. I like just sitting with my binos and spot scope and my film case full of milk weed wind detector seeds. wish we had a late hunt here. Jan would be my 1st pick to hunt. Hope Tenn extends season thru Jan and they can have Sept back!

It's a bit different shooting the recurves than self bows for me.That's why I shoot it a fair amount of time before and during hunting season with that bow.For my success paying attention to deer movement/wind direction/ and concealed access to my hunting spot are probably the most important factors I try to keep track of and control well. What the deer actually does is not and you can figure it to happen.
Then there's times everything comes together then too and it's like to me this animal comes by just like I want for my benefit and I'm thankful for that.

Still only have a wax oil finish on this hunter bow. Prolly will go with me out West in 2019. Will have some stories for another year then I suspect.

It's a hunt tool. Goes with my hunts stories. Don't care to play "whose got Bling" in bows.

I can understand that for some.I've always said function over form is the most important.I always show a bit of info and pics of the bows/arrows and equipment I used hunting for the season.

I also understand, I have always built bows for function over beauty and also build them to hunt with,[ sweet tips by the way.] That being said this is a primitive bow site and main function is building bow, some here don't hunt [to each their own ] and many others do have the privilege to hunt as we do and sharing your builds in just the right thing to do. We have a lot of new folks here and to see the works of others that have been at it for a while is a great help, sharing and passing it on is our motto. For some it may be about bling but most just want to share what they are doing in hopes it may help someone else. Not many sites can say that. We are special and that is what I love about this place. Not getting on you Shawn but I know you well enough I can tell you how I feel. See ya in a day or 2  ;) :) :) :)

Getting time to get into it heavy with Broadheads. Was thinkin my doe thinning was over. Well, I was just contacted buy a good friend that his farm they manage for deer is over run with doe  (young & old) form the last three easy winters. They want to take 30-50 out and on one orphan section of a  hunnerd acres they need it done by bow only. Looks like the skinning shed will be busy again in '19-2020. Good thing is, I don't need to take any off my hunt area, I think??

Hey Eddie.

Yeah, guy brought me in. Its a nice spot has one farm house right next to kill zone. They got a bean field in there and its destroyed. We puts stands in cut trees with chainsaws. Got lockons in and from up there a familt group of doe’s, yearlings weee bedded 50 yds away would not leave!

Got houses along entire property line. Big lots , deer are everywhere. Thinkin these folks are all feeding them. Fat corn fed deer meat makes wonderful brats.
