Title: Hunting possibles bag
Post by: BowEd on November 18, 2018, 04:22:59 pm
Last couple evenings I sewed up a possibles bag big enough to hold all my calls and a small set of binoculars while I bow hunt.I've been using my flint and steel possibles pouch in the past and it was too small really. This one fits the stuff a lot better. It's 9" by 10" and holds my bleat call/grunt call/rattle sticks/turkey call/and binocs.
I had some spare deer smoked brain tan around and an old gray fox hide and made a round braided carrying strap for it.

Thanks fellas....It's winter time here now for a bit.You never know with this weather any more.Seems I always settle in with these kind of projects then.I hand sewed everything on this one. Those calls I really do need with me.Would'nt have gotten all the shots at deer if I did'nt have them along.Probably not as handy as them hanging around my neck or in my coat pockets but I don't like carrying and using them that way either.
If a person gets into this braiding it's kinda fun the things to make.

Nice work, Ed!  Is the braid a 4 strand round?  Always nice to have things handy!

Yes Hawk and the actual strap ended up around a good 3/8" thick.Pretty comfortable. That's using 1/4" wide lace.

As usual I can't seem to leave things well enough alone.I decided to do a little beadwork on this bare bag flap begging for it.It's a 3" rosette.Beads are size 11 and 12 seed beads.I used a no.12 sharps beading needle and nylon nymo thread.
I wanted it to represent what it is used for.The blue is sky blue for my surrounding area I hunt/the brown is arrow heads/the red is blood with the tin coned split white and dyed red brain tan lace representing blood dripping from the arrow heads wound.
It's sioux lazy stitched on brain tan which means it's embroidered onto the leather without going all the way through the leather.A feature about brain tans' toughness and softness to allow this type work on it with the same ease as sewing onto wool trade or flannel cloth only the material is 10 times tougher.Makes it easier on the fingers while beading and the stitching holds very well.
It's probably not my best work as some beads are a little crowded and other places not but it'll have to do this time. The sioux lazy stitch is supposed have a slight hump on it in it's final look and was used on the great plains area mostly.Along with the cheyenne lazy stitch which laid a little flatter. Not to mention the many different ways to edge bead leather also.I learned from a how-to book on beadworking. Before beading the natives quilled their garments for expression and decoration.Dyeing their garments was practiced too.

The bead lines need to be straight in line pointing to the center on rosettes using the sioux lazy stitch. There's an overlaid in line applique method of doing rosettes too as pictured on this buffalo hat with this keyhole design. The overlaid stitch was used a lot around the eastern great lakes area where floral curved type designs were used.Having uniform sized beads for this method is a must for nice work to be done. These are all czech seed beads.

No stitching on reverse side.

First, you can make a functional possibles bag or you can add your personal touch to that bag. For me, the art work makes the bag. I'm a practical person but the additional embellishment makes the piece.  8)   :OK

Good point Pat.I believe that to be true too.Embellishment to the point of compromising function is a waste of time though. No matter what functional craft. It has to serve it's purpose and be durable and perform well.Otherwise it is just a wall hanger.I think a personal story/explanation of inspiration/or history of use should be shown in the design as well in these things.
It's different for those things that are put on display and meant to serve no other purpose other than that.

One more additional pic.A cheyenne lazy stitch was used for the extra arrow heads. That type stitch will lay flatter.I like to use the glass beads weight to hold the bag flap shut.

I hope so Mike. Are you ready for the snow storm coming soon? You guys might get rain though.I've got the tractor chains on/fueled up and waiting. An old fashioned type winter this year I guess. We're supposed to get around 8".That would be ok but it's supposed to blow for the better part of a day up to 40 mph which will makes things interesting.
Went hunting with bag a few times since made and it proved to be handy.Out of the way but still accessible for calls.I think I'm through adding on any more beadwork.A little can go a long ways for embellishment.Too much makes it too gawdy IMO.Since it's a possibles bag I'll use it for practically anything I want to carry along.

Yeah, took one of my extended winter naps.    ???

We'll likely confirm date for The Wright City Gathering shortly after holidays. Will likely be sometime in March. Would be wonderful if stars align and Bill is able to make it . . . maybe bring Clint with ya.

I'm looking forward to seeing all of ya!

Ed, we got just a dusting. I was thinking of you when heard how much some parts of Iowa received. We were in Boston area for Thanksgiving. It was COLD there . . . I mean like 5 degrees cold. Looked on 'puter while there and saw it was 70 at home. GEEEEEZ!

Someone please remind me of this wright gathering in March. I really wanted to go this year but it was my grandson's first pinebox derby and he asked me to help him build his. I'd really like to make it there if I can next time. It looks like my kinda fun.
Bjrogg
PS Ed you do really nice work. Alway very functional and just the right amount of embellishment.

Thanks fellas.
Well we were'nt disappointed with the snow storm.I'm all dug out here.We are getting into an older fashioned type of winter here now.I think it's a good thing.Would'nt change a thing though!!!It's beautiful outside and hope I can continue as long as I can this way.Love the area I live in.Just happy we did'nt need to travel through it.Many stranded motorists along the interstate.
I learned and refined all this tanning/working with leather and rawhide and beadwoking years ago back in the 80's and 90's while buckskinning. Was'nt making bows then just muzzle loader deer hunting and coon hunting.
This deer hunting is fun but a spit in the bucket physically compared to coon & big game hunting while making a career of coon hunting hounds. The leather making skills helped me here too making leashes and battery lite carriers.I used veg tanned leather for that though.Raising/training and hunting hounds requires 10 times the effort more so physically while making a living than making a bow and hunting with it.250 nights a year for 25 years adds up for time in the woods.More hunting in 10 years than most people do in a life time with seasonal deer hunting. It's a good retired type past time for me the way I see it and I enjoy it.
Many things are out there to enjoy. It's just a matter of will and degree of satisfaction the way I see it.I do enjoy conversing with other makers of bows and accesseries connected to it.Many talented craftsmen and women on here.More so than me.There's lot more things connected to self bow hunting out there people don't get to see on this site and would like to see their work on here too.
