Hi folks. This spring I was lucky enough to find a piece of black haw viburnum on a friends property. At the time I was not even sure what type of viburnum was growing there, so I only cut 2 pieces, but every creek gutter had 20-30 ft shrubs growing in them. I could not find much information about this wood but as I understand it makes great arrows so why not try a bow. My crude method to test for SG came out at 75 so even more reason to try.
2 difficult issues with this piece of wood 1) the crown changes in the handle so one limb has a high crown and the other not so much. 2) The upper limb has a bulge close to mid limb where an old wound had been. I was able to remove the worst of it but the bulge exists on the final piece. I'll put a pic of this below.
I did add some reflex to the tips but I wouldn't call it a recurve. Shoots very nice. I would highly recommend this wood if you could find a piece big enough. I sure hope to find some more the next time I go out there. I'll specifically be looking for it. Lots of 1st's for me on this one, seemed to come out ok.
Back is a black walnut hull stain, Grip is made from dogbane cordage and walnut stained rawhide(dog chew bone). Its different but ain't they all? Its 66"ntn with 8" handle and fades. Drawing 44 pounds at 28".

Looks great. I have tried this wood before. Like you I had a feeling it would be good but alas, I ruined it. Oh well family stayed a little warmer that evening. Again well done.

Love the character on your bow M2A.Tiller looks excellent.I find most woods that'll make good shoot shafts will make good bows and have a lot of character to boot.While heat treating dogwood the smell of that wood was'nt exactly pleasant either.

Yeah Threesons it has to be the most unpleasant wood to smell that I have worked with. In fact its the only one I have come across so far. But that's not going to stop me from trying to find more:) You should give it another try. I'd have never thought dogwood would be in that list as well but thanks for the heads up Ed, hope to give that a go later this winter.
Im surprised I have not seen walnut stain used more often Don. Ive been using commercial wood dyes but have been trying to study up on ways to stain wood and leather using materials I can find. Also for months now I've been pondering camo ideas, looking at the theories of military styles and wildlife. I liked how it looked in my shop but never thought until I took the pictures that it would fit in so well in the woods. Always nice to stumble on something like that. Ill be working with that more.

No osage in those woods. Mostly locust and grape vines, but the locust has either been dead too long or not in a good place for me to drop safely so I never asked the owner if I could cut any. Mike
