Title: Creek reproduction hickory bow and arrows set.
Post by: loefflerchuck on November 28, 2018, 09:10:33 pm
I want to start out with this photo of where the stave came from. Even for hickory a good stave costs about $80 once you factor in shipping. I get most of my hardwood staves from MacBeath Hardwood.  I spend an hour or so down there going through various hardwoods to see what is best and hopefully get at variety of hardwood boards to pull staves from. I look for boards I can pull single ring back staves from. This hickory board was not the best but for $30 I got the stave for this bow, a 54" stave, a 45" stave and 8 good hickory arrows. It took some digging to get at this stave but not much more work than starting from a log.

I made it for someone in South Carolina who wanted a set like what was once used there. Bow is hickory 57" long and has a 45# draw at 27". As you can see one limb has a slight deflex. The strung profile looks off but it is not when you consider a good tiller as equal working limbs. The string is 3 ply deer rawhide. Of course rawhide stretches more than good modern strings but makes a good string once it has been stretched and a tuff long lasting one if made well.
Ryan(Wizardgoat) sent me some viburnum shafts some time back. It is the first time I tried these shoots. They were thich and I took them down quite a bit to get the proper spine. It is a great hard shaft wood. The points are copies of the style from the area.

Great looking set!
Recently I also tried to make my first arrows from shafts. Hazel and Dogwood. I was surprised how easy you can correct them, so I'm going to harvest more shoots and try to make the rest which I sorted out cause I thought they are to much curved!
Did you knapped the points yourself?
Again very nice!

Chuck,
Nice job on the set!  What width rawhide did you use, and how did you stretch it?

That is a nice reproduction set you made.  Very cool.
I like how you chase rings from boards.  How thick was the hickory board you started with?

Sweet bow set Chuck! Although I’m fairly certain those shafts were osoberry aka Indian plum.

I find inspiration in your bows.  Appreciate that you make bows as you consider the past bow materials and designs of the natives.

And, I always wondered about chasing a ring on a board.  You just rasp gently and then knife edge gently, basically, I imagine...

Thanks everyone. Not sure how thick the rawhide was. Thin enough to stretch the fibers out to make it about 35% longer. I tie about 10 # weight on the strings and use that to twist the strands. Then leave the weight connected until it's dry

Board was 4.5" thick. I usually get easier boards than this but this was the best hickory they had that day.

Ryan, I still have that plum. You send me these shafts a long time back. You said you got them from someone else and traded them forward to me. That was you right?
