That is cool! I like the hamon. What kind of clay do you use?

mecos from menards.

Nice replacement knife, Kevin. ;)

Can you clear something up for me? The hamon shows the difference in hardness, right? Will it tend to lose it's edge quicker where the hamon reaches the edge in those few spots?

correct.
i thought the same thing when i started but havent noticed a significant difference in hardness till you get a ways above the line.
its still reasonably hard till you get about 1/3 the way up the blade.
you can feel it when its sanded,

Do you put the clay on the edge or the back to fire? I don't know much about forging yet. Thanks,
Hawkdancer

spine.
the clay stopped 1/8 to 3/16 above where the actual line is.

Great craftsmanship as always. One of these days I gotta try my hand at this. John

Very nice, but is the edge still hard where the Hamon dips down to it?

The edge seems to be holding up well.
If I ever get to the point I'm not happy with it I will reheat treat and temper.

Cool :OK
I haven’t done anything with hamons so I wasn’t sure if the hardened steel stops right at the line or if it was a bit past it.
-
Nice blade Kevin...Like the overall shape of the handle and blade
-
Really like that blade Kevin. That'll be a very handy knife to use and carry. I'd like to see what you come up with for leather to carry it.

here ya go,
this has been a working knife since I made the sheath .
I added the orange para cord so I don't loose the knife as easily.
thanks

Nice knife and sheath Kevin I love the one I got from you.

Beautiful work Kevin, got to love that. So the clay goes on the sharp edge or on back down ? I have seen it done on TV but didn't pay much attention.

Pappy
thanks pappy.
from the back down about 2/3 the blade height.
clay thickness and temperature and type of quenchant can yield some interesting patterns.

Thanks, I think I got it, put the clay on before you heat it up, correct, I have just been getting them non magnetic and the quench in oil, it's pretty hard so then in the oven at 450 for a few hours and let cool, seems to do a pretty good job but I am sure not very precise. ;) Thanks for your help, I am just starting and have a lot to learn, Right now just doing it in the fire with a blower I have set up. Need a forge and plan on that soon.

pappy
you are correct.
clay before you heat.
quench in warm canola oil.
450 is a little hot
.
id stick to 375-400 for 2 hours/

Thanks Kevin, much appreciated.

1 More question Kevin, how thick do you put the clay on it ?
Pappy
-
About 3/32 of an inch.
-
Thanks Kevin, went looking for the stuff today but couldn't find any in store, Lowes has it on line so I will have to order it. :(

pappy
most any place that sells wood stove supplies will have stove cement.
check you local hardware.
up here even tractor supply and family farm and home carry it.
-
Thanks again Kevin, Beau found it on line and I am supposed to have it Thursday, may try it out this weekend. ;)

1 more question Kevin, The stuff came in, I was reading about it and even though it doesn't say anything about what I am going to do with it, it does say let set for 24 hours before adding heat, does this apply to what I am going to do with it or is that just brick and such, sorry to be a bother but know you know and I sure don't. ;) :)
Pappy

pappy
its no bother.
you don't have to let it dry for 24 hours .
I usually just speed dry by holding the knife with tongs and running it in and out of the heat till dry.
most of the time you are only putting it on from 1/16 to 1/8 inch thick.

Thanks much for all your help.

Thanks again Kevin, it worked out way better that I thought. :)
