Hawk, its ash mixed thru the obsidian and can be a pain to knap due to hard and soft spots mix.  Bob

Looks like a good one. I like to play with it also but it is a challenge.

OK - one more time - Snowflake obsidian does NOT have ash pockets. It DOES have a mineral called cristobalite in the glass matrix. Either way it is a pain in the butt to knap. The point looks good. If I was at work I could post a pick of one I made years ago from a small slab which is the best way to knap TRUE snow flake obs.

Interesting

Ben made me look that one up. I always thought it was ash pockets also.

Bob forgive me but you need to post anything that includes the letters snow more in the summertime.  This time of year we should be posting volcanic material and rock right out of heat treatment. Real nice point btw. (=) (=) (=)

It hardly ever snows here and I've never worked snowflake obsidian but all the rain we been getting would surely wash all that  ash, uh I mean  cristobalite right out of it and make it soggy.

You did a good job with the ol hammerstone and antler tools on it.
