This is the fifth bow I've built, my first sinew backed and the first bow I've posted on Primitive Archer. After seeing some of the exceptional bows by some very talented bowyers posted here I was a little hesitant to post mine but here goes.
I got this stave from Clint last winter. After removing the sapwood, chasing a ring and cleaning up the sides I noticed a ring separation two rings below my established back. After removing two more rings and navigating a hairline split I was left with a stave that was getting somewhat narrow. I was left with a width of 1 1/4" so I decided to try my luck at sinew backing. I heat treated the belly allowed the bow to acclimate for 2 weeks then applied 40 grams of elk leg sinew to each limb in May. I left the bow to cure for 7 months and gained 2 1/2" of reflex. After tillering I'm left with 1 5/16" of reflex. I'm still struggling with my tillering skills but this bow shoots quite well and is pretty quiet even without string silencers.
Specs:
53" NTN
50#@26"
1 1/4" widest part of limb
3/8" width at tips
Red linen phenolic & Bighorn Ram tip overlays
Diamondback skins
Elk leg sinew
Dyed Deerskin handle
Leather lace
Dyed Beavertail arrow rest and pass
I'm sure the phenolic wasn't needed but I like the color contrast and reinforcement for FF strings. The bighorn ram horn was compliments of Pearl Drums and the deerskin was from a buck I killed with a selfbow and stone arrowhead.
Thanks for looking. I hope my pics show up. Steve

That's a fine looking bow PaSteve! I’ve never done a sinew backed bow but the tiller looks good to me. I would be proud of that one. Great job

Thanks for all the compliments. It sure means a lot coming from you guys. I've learned so much ever since I've joined PA. I'm grateful that there's so many excellent bowyers on this site willing to share their knowledge. Now, I'm working on some bamboo arrows to match my bow. Thanks, Steve

Great job Steve! And truly remarkable for your 5th bow. I think I broke the first 100 or so, (--) so you're well on your way for sure. 8)
