These are my(first) new arrows for this year. Most are sourwood shoots but one is viburnum, one is maple and one is switch cane(actually I think it is hill cane, right Steve?). Four of the arrows were fletched with Cherokee 2 fletch, 2 are with 3 small feathers laid back to back and 3 arrows are regular 3 fletch. All but the 3 fletch are ties on with sinew. The 3 fletch was done with a JoJan straight fletch using fletch tape with the forward end wrapped with sinew. All the arrows have self nocks with sinew wrap and the cane has a bamboo skewer glued in the center hole before cutting the self nock. All arrows but the cane are sealed with pitch pine varnish, as well as the sinew wrappings. All have field points now but later on, some will have stone or trade points. ;D Pat

those are really nice i especially like the scorch marks on them :)
-
here is a few more pics. Note the arrow with the crooked shaft. It has 3 small, heavily barred feathers back to back. Shoots pretty good too. I do need to do a bit of fine tuning to it, though.

Thanks David. I do that for camo purposes but also it is part of my tempering process. Pat
-
Cool Arra's Pat....wish I was talented enough to make them from anything but Hardwood or cedar!!
-
All ya gotta do is do it! ;) They are not all that hard to make and it is quite rewarding to make an arrow from scratch with found materials and have it fly. :o 8) Pat
-
Looks good Pat but why don't ya shoot that deer in yer yard ;)
Ya should see the crooked arrow I sent Shannon ::) I think with just a little more tweaking it would have shot ok.
-
neat lookin arrows i like that sort of fletching. nice dogs too. ;)
-
Nice looking arrows Pat. I've been wanting to try that two fletch. How much time does it take to do them that way compared to standard three fletch?
Alan
-
:) Great looking arrows Pat you have my vote for arrows of the month ;D Maybe year
Ron
-
Pat, nice looking work but need to see them in person, guess I will here in less than a month. Can't really see exzactly just what you did. I have not had much luck with this type of fletching so am anxious to see yours and try some more. Did you get my P.M. reply to staying in your big tent at the classic? Kenneth
-
Nice arrows Pat ! What do you have writen on the one cane arrow ??? is that the weight....i liek the scortch markers too :)
-
All ya gotta do is do it! ;) Pat
Amen brother, it is primitive archery after all. ;D Nice arrows Pat. Justin
-
you got some vulture fletch on there? I was lucky enough to come upon some shed feathers under a roost
-
Dana, That deer has been shot thousands of times. ;D
HunterTrapper, Sister and Lucy Brown always have to get in the pics.
Alan, I am familiar with the standard 3 fletch and I can do them pretty quick. When I get used to the 2 fletch I have no doubt I can do them faster....but for now I am enjoying the journey. ;)
Thanks Ron, I'll buy you a tip of the jar when I get to Twin Oaks. ;)
Kenneth, I got your PM. You should be about ready for some R&R! ;) This is my first attempt at these types of fletching but I can see I will continue to use them and hopefully improve my execution of them. Yeh, the tent ought to be plenty roomy although, it seems to fill up pretty quickly with just me in it at hunting camp. ;D
John, I always weigh bare shafts and finished arrows and indicate the finished arrow weight. That cane arrow, with a 125gr field point weighs 547gr.
Justin, Thanks. We ain't building Swiss watches, just primitive archery stuff. That is a hard lesson to teach...and learn! ::)
Humaza, They are Canada Goose feathers. I don't think the law allows me to use buzzard feathers, whether they were molted or not.
Thanks everyone. Arrows are a bunch of work but a journey worth taking. Everyone should try them. Depending on where you live, there is a hardwood or softwood shoot, a cane or a tree worth splitting in your area that you can make your arrows from. These arrows are way tougher than any store bought arrows too...and they are free for the taking!!! 8) Pat
-
impressive work, as usual, pat. i wish i could give them a closer look in tennessee. but hey, i'll try to check out your 2009 batch at the 12th classic.
-
Marius, I promise they will be way more impressive then. Looking forward to the reunion! 8) PBRs on me! ;D Your redneck buddy! ;D Pat
-
Great looking arrows Pat. In one pic you have an arrow that has a crook in it. How does it fly? Also, did I see LAB butts in one pic?
Thanks
Tracy
-
Tracy, crooked arrows are fun to play with. As long as the point and nock end line up crooked arrows fly pretty well. I would not use one for hunting because it would impede penetration but at the target range you get a lot of surprised looks and questions about them. :o 8)
Yeh, the choc lab is Lucy Brown . She is 4 years old and I got her from Chris Cade. She is quite the skirl dog too. If I were a dog trainer she would have been an excellent gun dog. Pat
-
I figured it did but just had to ask. I've been experimenting with rose shoots and various hardwood limbs and have learned alot by just doing it. Someday I'll fill my quiver with them. All of my labs are bird hunters but they spend more time as family members than they do retievers. Just like kids. Thanks and maybe see you in Tn. if you're there.
Thanks Tracy
-
Nice looking arrows there Pat! That two fletch and cane shafts makes for a great combo don't you think? From working with other's cane and yours I do believe you just might have some "hill cane". Your's is slightly heavier and denser then most making for good hunting weight cane arrows. As I mentioned before, you grow the BEST STUFF ;D.-ART B
-
Well Art, I have a batch for you. I'll send it soon. I also have a special hardwood(maple I believe) that I want to send you to see what you can do with it. I found it yesterday.
The cane and 2 fletch do make for a great arrow. I have to work more with the 2 fletch to get them laying correctly so they don't make much noise. Pat
ps. Say hey to the guys for me!

Good lookin' arrows, Pat. I've been working on some too, hope to have a bunch done in time to lose them at the classic. :) Those two-fletches fly good, don't they. I just like the looks of them, too.
-
Looks more like walking walking stick material to me Pat :o hehe!
Here's a couple things you might try to help with that two-fletch noise. One is a kind of parabolic cut on the fletching and maybe try some turkey tail feather. The softer of the secondary wing feathers helps also. Wrapping the fletch down helps too.
Looking forward to working with some more of your cane Pat! Had some good results with 'em last year. Everybody's asking if you, Tom and the others are going to make our rendezvous this year, what you want me to tell 'em?-ART B
-
Great looking arrows brother.. I will be looking forward to the pictures of the meat you make with all of them new arrows. keep your chin to the wind Hawk a/ho
-
Did I say vulture? I'm certain that I meant dirty turkey.
;)
-
Guess I was a bit confused, the one fletch with split shaft is what didn't fly well for me, nor the two feathers tied back to back, need to try the two fletch and experiment a little more. Kenneth
-
Nice arrows Pat. Those 2-fletch are nice. You better hold on to those arrows at the classic.....as I recall last year a certain "Hillbilly Jr." was quite good at shooting other peoples arrows ;D ;D ;D You kicked our butts last year Pat. :)
-
Yeh, Jonathan, Cody lost most of Colene's arrows for her. ;D I know better than to give him acces to my new arrows. That apple sure doesn't fall far from the tree. ;D Pat
-
Nice job Pat,love those 2 fletch, maybe you will loose a couple on the range and I can find them, after you are gone. ;D I have got to do some of them I have the Cain and sourwood shafts, just need to
get motivated. :)
Pappy
-
Well, Pappy. Get on the stick. This lazy streak in you is surprising! ;D Pat
-
Ahh, those are looking good Pat - just reminds me that I have got to get busy!!! I ain't gonna have any arra's to shoot at Pappy's :-X.
-
Ya I know Pat,maybe after the Classic.GregB has me straightening stave right now,he is keeping
a watchful eye on me to be sure I am staying busy. ;) ;D
Pappy
-
Why are my ears burning all of a sudden? >:( ;D
-
pat those arrows are cool, I have a bundle of shoots I need to get to work on. Art sent me one he did recently and made me feel like I was in kindergarden arrow making still. I am using his arrow for my model. Steve

Pappy
You....get motivated.....thats a statement now....I dont think you know what it means to sit still!!!! I wish I had half of your ambition...or energy!!!
-
Steve, Arts arrows make everyone arrows look like kindergarten work. ;)
Hillbilly, They ought to be burning...the things you teach that youngun! Sheesh!!! ::) Pat
-
great looking arrows Pat ,I have come to prefer sourwood shoots over most others , weight ,durability and availability, anyway nice arrows. ;)
-
Thanks Ahawi. So far, sourwood is my favorite. I've been shooting them for about 3 or 4 years. They are almost impossible to break. I did have one a few years ago that I struck a large rock head on. Dulled the field point but didn't break. I never figured out why but that arrow never shot well again. It looked like a windmill going down range. It looked straight(for my arrows at least ;D) and spun true but wouldn't fly worth a darn after hitting that rock. ??? Pat
-
That rock knocked the spirit out of your arrow! I have a couple sourwood arrows that were small buckrubs they were the easiest to straighten and among the best that i have! :D
-
I like the sourwood, too. It's probably the best all-around wood for shoot shafts.
-
sweet!! i just posted a thing asking if sour wood was any good. i got it by the tons down here. later, gonna go cut some.
-
Good looking arrows, Pat.
Sean
-
oh, yeah, forgot to say it. great arras friend. 8)
-
what is sourwood? and where can i get some? Hawk
-
awesome pat.. finished up a half dozen myself. had no focus and was tired when i went in the woods now i have 2 ;D. fred was just up but i missed him.
-
Mike, sourwood is Oxydendrum arboreaum, a tree that grows in the eastern US. It sends out shoots that make great arrows. I'm sure we can round you up a few.
-
steve are the shoots suckers from the root or are they more like the secondary growth on a crab or redbud. ive used sourwood in designs but usually havent had the opportunity to view them once theyve established themselves.
-
Mike, we know where you can get some! ;)
Jamie, the natural habit of sourwood is to send up straight shoots in its new growth, weather from the base of the tree or at the terminal buds at the top of the tree. Also, being an under story plant that grows straight, when it becomes unsupported by the surrounding canopy, sourwood has the tendency to lean over and subsequently shoots will sprout along the top side of the trunk.
Where I get most of my shoots is along the road side where the DOT mows the road banks every 3 or so years. Sourwood seems to be a heavy seeder and many seedlings develop along these sunny road banks. After a few years of growth the mowers come back through, cut them back to near the ground and new shoots sprout and head for the sun. After their 2nd year of growth is my favorite time to cut them.
I have also noticed a variation amongst individual sourwoods as to shoot lengths. Some grow is only a foot or so and some will grow up to about 6' and in my observations this remains consistent from one year to the next.
If you were to go back to those landscapes where you planted sourwood and cut them to the ground, you would see plenty of shoot growth. ;D
I haven't seen Fred lately either. I'm with a different company so I don't frequent the coffee shop were we used to see each other. Pat
-
im glad i decided to ask about the stuff. obviously it aint to bad!! got mine drying now. caint wait to start workin with em.
-
thanks pat . im gonna get one for my yard. im pretty sure the customers would get pissed if i cut theirs down ;D
-
Pat pm me I would like to trade for some of those shafts ... need bear huntin arrows... only need about eight shafts... Hawk
-
ya gonna kill a bear wit two sticks and a string. i admire that alot. post pics.
