Title: one knife ten friends
Post by: BrianS on March 05, 2019, 06:26:39 am
Myself and ten friends have started what I am calling the Red Ranger Journey. It started with a brand new out of the box Victorinox Red Ranger knife. Each of my Friends on the list will have it sent to them and they will use it outdoors for any tasks they choose. Each person will get to keep it for a week or so before, they mail it to the next guy on the list. Only rules are it must be used outdoors and you must take a picture of the knife in action. At the end of the knife's ten plus week journey, I will pick a friends name out of a hat and they will get to keep the knife. Today it was used to cut a small sapling that was blocking where a trail cam was set up.
Have a great day,
brian

I had "the tinker" I believe it was called. I carried it with me everywhere. Even to church and weddings for probably close to thirty years. It was worn down from a hard life on the farm. I went to a Tigers baseball game last year and they took it for security reasons. I could have walked back to my vehicle but it was a long way to it. I should have. I still miss it almost every day.

My personal Swiss Army Knife was my late Fathers I carry it every day and every day it is used for something. On mine I have found the large blade, the wood saw and the screwdrivers get used the most. Every time I use it I think of my Dad

Back in 1966, my folks gave me a Swiss Army knife, a fairly basic model. It's my daily carry. I've got my Dad's Swiss Army Knife, it's got a few more tools, after he passed away. I use mine and his all the time. They've been all over the US, Mexico, and the Sand Box.

I bought one last year at a Garage sale for $5 its the Economy model (7 function.)  The saw is deadly sharp.

(S)Not a very adventurous use this morning but the rules were adhered to and it was used outdoors (10 degree temps) to change the line on my fishing reel. Even took a few practice casts out into the snow to test. Did I mention it has been a long winter? Next stop for the knife is my Poverty Hill cabin this weekend and after i use it for something there it will be handed off to "Dino Rocks" to use.

To funny about the rear drag reel.  I prefer the rear drag but sometimes the function gets a little sticky..

Cold and clear morning on Poverty Hill. Used the Ranger knife to start a little fire after snowshoeing. Later handed off the knife to "Dino Rocks" to use at Bone Creek this week.

Handed the knife off to my friend "Dino Rocks". Dino used it to graft some fruit trees in his orchard.

"Dino Rocks" reports he used the knife quite a bit today at Bone Creek while tapping trees to make his maple syrup.

I think Dino may have grown attached to the knife. He used it for a couple of additional tasks before passing it on Dave (Iron Leg) yesterday. Dino's Son used it to cook up lunch on the wood stove and Dino used it to repair a fluorescent lamp he was using at a Mineral Presentation he was doing for a local University. I am interested to see what Dave uses it for around his bow shop. Two Users so far, Eight to go.

I like knives always browsing the flea markets, garage sales and thrift have found some really nice ones very cheap at that.  I just can't Sharpen them worth a hoot...   >:(   Hopefully I'll upload a photo or 2 soon showing some of my finds.

Being a true Bushcrafter, one of the first things Rob did was to modify the knife to include a additional function (pin). Rob is also the Cook at our Archery Club and the Ranger saved the day at today's Shoot when no sharp pencil could be located to make up a food list.

Woodley, it depends on how much you want to spend for equipment!  A Lanksy is almost foolproof and has diamond stones available.  You can get a wide variety of Arkansas hard stones, dot diamond sharpeners, etc.!  It just depends on how much work you want to put into it!  Turn on your favorite type of music, kick back, and start sharpening!  An appropriate beverage will also help!  And a big dose of patience!  It does take a while!  I think I have about 20 working knive or more!

Rob used the Ranger knife for a interesting task today. He crafted a fishing lure (shrimp imitation) from a plastic straw. The lure is part of a monthly outdoors skills practice that he is part of. I am interested to see  how well it works at catching fish but knowing Rob, he will catch something with it. Rob will have the Victorinox knife for a few more days before it goes to the next user Kevin (Buffalo Gobbler).

Kevin,
You are next on the list. When it gets to you it will be at the halfway point in it's journey. Five more Users left, before the names go in a hat and one is chosen as the winner of the Red Ranger knife. Hannah is keeping a log of where it's been and what it has been used for. I will include her log with the knife when it is all over. When you get the knife, please take some pictures of it in use.
Take care,
brian

I guess Rob wanted to use the knife one last time before passing it off to Kevin (Buffalo Gobbler). Rob used it to cook dinner at his camp, cut some chaga off a birch tree and to make a bow drill kit.

Six "Official Users" plus one "Guest User" so far. The Victorinox Ranger has been used for at least 40 tasks so far and has held up very well. It is headed for Jim and Lynne next and then on to the final stretch with Mark, Joe and Eric. I have no concerns about four of those Users but Big Eric may just push the knife to it's limits! Anyways it has been fun (for me at least) seeing all the uses for the knife.
Have a great day!

Pappy,
It's been fun (at least to me) watching that little knife being used for so many things. Just a few more users on the list and then a name will be drawn to keep the knife. A couple of the Guys and Girls on the list of users have requested to borrow it from the final Winner to take with them on some special trips. Mark asked to take it on his hike of part of the Appalachian Trail in Maine and Vermont, Hannah asked to take it on a trip to visit England (where she is from) and Eric asked to take it on Scout Camp Trip this Summer. Who knows maybe the Red Ranger knife will just keep traveling and getting passed around.
take care,
brian

The Victorinox was borrowed by Mark from Sue (the final Winner of the knife)
Mark had the opportunity this past week to take Red Ranger with him to a trek on a section of the Appalachian Trail.

Mark and two high school buddies started their trek in Pinkham Notch, NH and finished up in Rangeley, ME.  One of the guys has been section hiking the AT for the past seven years
and is planning on hitting the summit of Mt. Katahdin, ME later in July this year.

Traveled through what is considered the most treacherous part of the AT, the Wildcat
Region (an extension of the Presidential Range of the White Mountains) up to Grafton
Notch, ME.  Red made it all the way to the halfway point between the Equator and the
North Pole.

The Victorinox Red Ranger assisted in everything from acting as a weight on the end of a rope to hang a bear
bag to cutting pieces of moleskin to help with a blister that He developed.
