Title: a thin and ugly, that's kind of thin
Post by: 1442 on March 07, 2019, 10:30:55 pm
This is a few pics of a Texas tab I worked tonight.
I used indirect for the final thinning pass
turned out not as big or thin as I was hoping for

here's the rock and the first four flakes

And I quote "that my friend... will kill."  ;D
Man that's amazing! I'm going to try to start flintknapping with bottles and broken toilet bowls! hope I will be able to make something like that someday!

Thanks for all the compelments,
Sleek, I would love to hang out wid ya. I think you would be a real good knapper cause you make bows with a k bar knife, and there are similarities to the process kind of, and you like to push the limits too it seems, so you got it.

Deerhunter 21,
You can do it. I started with bottle bottoms, and toilets and stuff. Toilets are good practice to learn your swing and angles, but it is notoriously hard to make a clean point without step fractures from it. It's good to hit it and hit it and hit it though, then hit some more of it, even if you don't make anything but flakes it's good practice.

MAIN THING is:
Develop good techniques that limit the stresses put on your body like using your legs to apply force when pressure flaking and brace the wrists with your legs too. Follow through and don't try to stop the bopper when percussion knapping is another very important part of technique to reduce stress and avoid injury to muscles and joints.

I just wanted to throw that out there cause I think it's  m portant.

That thing is so ugly 1442. I think I should take that one off your hands.

Thanks Terry. It doesn't look nearly as ugly in person. It sure is sharp. I wish I could post pictures now but Photobucket locked me out. You do very nice work and I have a special place for them.

You're welcome bjrogg.
I'd like to direct percussion photobucket into a preform and flute off all the bad ideas they've implemented lately.
Like taking the crapoffaturd to remove the stink, probably can't flute that big.

Hope you get it worked out.

Bjrogg...I'd carry a used KFC spork to a gunfight against you for a chance to get that blade!

1442, I love your posts because of the beautiful symmetry of your work.  And thanks for the way your posts are always encouraging other rock knockers.

I just cant get my fingers to type what my lil brain is thinking, so I try to make up for it with pictures.
