Title: Marshall 2019
Post by: paulsemp on March 21, 2019, 01:20:07 pm
Chris and I were texting today saying we're surprised Mr. Guy hadn't started this yet. I have none of the information I'm sure someone will put a link on here. it's always the weekend leading into Memorial  day.  Nina and I will be there for sure

My daughter is graduating that weekend so I'll have to head home on Friday.  I might try to get there early to make up for it.  Will the gate be open on Monday?

I'll be there probably Thursday this year and the wife is coming along. Can't wait to see everyone again. Hopefully the weather is nice, but either way it'll be a great time.

Osage, are you running the trade blanket again?

We got there on Monday last year. I believe Marc Butler is the "keeper of the gate".

Hey so will this be like the mojam where people make bows and help people make bows?
Title: Re: Marshall 2019
Post by: osage outlaw on March 25, 2019, 06:07:45 pm
Yes.  But the bow shop is bigger and busier.   Get on YouTube and search for The Tennessee Classic.   There are several videos about it.

Post by: Knoll on March 25, 2019, 07:18:18 pm
MoJam in Marshall, MO and Primitive Archery Rendezvous in Marshall, MI and TN Classic near Clarksville, TN are all a hoot. All feature bow building. But each is unique in many ways.
I'm lucky to be able to enjoy all of 'em each year. Those not so fortunate could do worse, imo, than make visits in revolving years.

My mistake.  I was thinking this was the Classic thread.  Marshall Michigan is a great shoot too.  Lots of bow building goes on there.

Pretty much what you would use at home. There may be a few extra benches but you can never tell. A bench vise and a couple of C clamps would work good. If you don't have wood there may be someone there with some.

And BJ, although our trailer sleeps 4 plus a dog, the kids will be staying in tents. I hope they can sleep over the sound of 'Bar snoring.

Oh no, Knoll! I hope it's salvageable.

I bought one with zipper sides at Costco earlier this year. Hoping to get some great use out of it this summer. Mother Nature better get this out of her system quick. I thought about getting one of those shade tents that Clint had at MoJam last year. Although I was pretty sure that Scott was going to be transported to the next county while trying to hold it down in that storm that came thru.

My Dad has given Cahl a little pup tent and an outfitter tent for him to use this year. We are counting the days until we can get this summer started.

Keep reading though this thread. I can't wait. Of course it's still to wet to get much farming done and I'm getting further behind every day. Got really close to dry enough to plant sugar beets but not quite. I'm gonna be like DVS. Coming as early as I can and staying as long as I can but won't know when that is till I leave.
Deerhunter21, I promise you. If you come you won't regret it. I can't imagine Clint not having staves. We,d have to give him a new handle that he probably wouldn't like. I know his daughter graduates that weekend so he's planning on arriving Monday and leaving Friday. The only problem with this event is that you will be totally hooked and have to return every year.

Bird dogs are supposed to have "soft mouths"!!  Unfortunately, somebody forgot to tell them that!  They are also supposed to be good at "fetching", I.e. Retrieving - that doesn't always work, either!  Labs are smart, most days!  Even when mixed with Border Collies and mentored by an Irish Water Spaniel, who forgot she was supposed to wait for the birds to be shot before retrieving them. Long story!

Greg named our new girl Lois, don't ask me why.  She is 4 years old so over the chewing stage.  Really well behaved but no formal training so we are teaching her some basics, like it's not polite to jump on people.  She is teaching Dusty that it's OK to be outside, and when you hear a scary noise, you don't have to hide under the couch, you can just bark a few times.

Found out today that at least 2 of our daughters are coming, and all 4 sons in law.  We were doing some planning for the trip today while we were all together.  We're all excited.

You will need everything in regards to food and camping. I think they sell hotdogs/burgers on Friday and Saturday. But plan on feeding yourself for the most part. There is a deelish potluck dinner on Saturday night. Bring a dish to pass, even a big bag of chips is adequate. Meat is supplied and table ware is provided.

Town is close by to if you need to pick some food up. There is a shower up front and restroom to. Might have the one in the back done now? They we're building it last year. Can't have a fire on the ground so if you need a fire you might have to bring one of those elevated fire pits. Not many electric hook ups and no sewer as far as I know. It's mowed but fairly Primitive camping. The pavilion is where everyone hangs out making bows and arrows. Bring clothing for any weather. It could be 90 it could be  light frost. It could be on the same day. Grass is always wet with dew in the morning so an extra pair of shoes is nice.

Heard from Guy that the showers/bathrooms in the back 40 are operational, that should be nice.

Can't wait to see all you guys there.

I got a few sugarbeets planted. A little bit of spraying done. Still so much to do yet before I can go. It's drizzling here today. At least it didn't rain a lot though. Susie and I really want to get there. I have know idea if or when though. Just know we're going to do everything we can to make it.

Its all part of the business, BJ. Hope you can guys can slide by. If not, I guess you wont see me working on your bow :)

Nice work on the kids bows, Pauly.

We plan on coming down Tuesday night if the weather is decent. I have a different camper and truck, so I'll be incognito.

My plan was to roll in Wed afternoon.

About every 10 years the back decides to "bark". Wellllll, it's howling right now.
Spent most of last 3 days in bed.
Did make trip to WalMart yesterday and seriously eyed those electric carts to get around, but couldn't bring myself to admit such a disability. So likely looked quite silly hobbling around the place and grimacing from time to time.   ::)

Paying visit to chiropractor today.

Hopefully, will be in much improved shape later this week.

I'm hoping if we don't make it, we can still get together and do our swapping in person another time soon. I know I'd really like to. I've been thinking I might take a scrap or two off yours to Drums. Like to see how it fits you first.

Hey everyone, this is tough I really want to be there and see all my good friends, but it is day for day around here.   Kim's has a few good days every now an then.  Writing this from the hospital.  With Marshall being 6 hrs away it's going to be hard for me to make it this year.  It sounds like it's shaping up to be a good one.  I really want to spend as much time with Kim as I can.  There will be Marshall next year.

Had a good day yesterday. Just got rained out now, but hopefully it quits and I can start again in a hour or two. Just a little shower so far. Was hoping to finish sugarbeets today but field was still to wet. Went through all the work of switching planter over to corn thinking maybe I could get it planted before last field of beets was dry. Now I'm sitting here watching it rain with my planter right full of corn. I think I see a break in the clouds. Ah that silver lining.

Knoll. Just looking on my phone but I think I see potato's, peppers and maybe cucumbers? Hard to tell on my phone.

Bill, so sorry that you and Kim won't be able to make it.  Please know we are thinking of you both.  Paul, glad you are introducing another kid to archery.  He'll have good role models with Nate and Brody.  Apparently Nate started packing his gear a few weeks ago. Knoll, as Nate pointed out at Elm Hall, since you are the oldest guy there you get special privileges.  BJ, since it looks like rain next week you can't get in the fields anyway, right?  See you all Wednesday, as soon as we can get around the Lake.

Andy and family, I'm sorry you all can't make it up for the weekend. Looking forward to seeing you in July.

Going to work on loading up the trailer today in between the raindrops. I'm really looking forward to this year. Cahl is excited to spend time with all of his friends and try the tent his Papa is letting him use. Looks like this might be a working vacation for me. I'm going to have to bring along the sewing machine to prep for vending at Compton in a couple of weeks but that's ok.

Paul, I was wondering about the pot luck.  We will have such a big crowd this year.  Can we contribute to the meat pile?  Should we cook up a bunch of brats or hot dogs?
I'm making up a big Greek tomato cucumber salad.  Does anyone have any suggestions for another dish?

Chris and I are bringing 4 shoulders, as that's all our smokers can really do in 1 shot.  In the past it's been hit or miss on whether it's enough or not. Brats and dogs are easy enough. one thing we could do Sharon to see how the week pans out.  we could always run to town and grab something. It'd be a shame to bring way too much food if there's not a good showing

Sharon, I'm really hoping it doesn't have to rain for me to come.  A week ago I really didn't think there was much if any chance of me making it. We had a good week. Still have a lot to do but I'm thinking I might be able to make it if I can get a few more good days.
Have know idea when, but hopefully Susie, Heather and our youngest grandson Clifford will be heading to Marshall. Still got my fingers crossed.

I had a crisis to avert today. The campers power tongue jack went out 4-5 days a go and you dont just drive to the store to get a new one. I ordered one on Amazon and it arrived Saturday, damaged. The switch was broke. So today I found the only open RV store within an hour and a half and bought the only jack they had for way too much money. It worked perfectly and we are ready to roll Tuesday night. Ill probably be on the opposite side of the drive, need a flatter area for my new rig. See ya'll soon....eh'

Man what a great time! It always is though.  I took a decent amount of pictures and am uploading them all now.

It is a special group of people that can make an event like this one great. I'm not naming names because I'm terrible with names, but thank you. Everyone. My group was my daughter Marley, her friend, Ireland, who was on her first ever camping trip almost 400 miles from home,  and myself. We ate, shot, and visited the entire time! Congratulations to deerhunter on his first successful stave bow, and a huge shout out to his dad Paul, who drove him from Nebraska to Michigan to meet strangers from the internet! Way to go dad!
Greg, what a time you must have had with the whole gang there. Thank you for putting up with the tornado of children we all sent in search of a fire loaded with marshmallows, chocolate and Graham crackers! Lol

I will post my pictures later tonight!

Looks like a good time was had by all!  Hope to see more pictures!  And start getting psyched up for MoJam!  Working a piece of Osage into a bow for Little Fiddle Woman, I hope.  Several challenges, might have to start a "do over" to get a better bow for her.  She might be able to make it to MoJam this year!

Kyle's wife, Fran, brought her spinning wheel. We interrupted many time with questions. She was sooo patient answering them all.

I just heard from Marie that Guy was in a wreck going home last night. She said he wasn't hurt but didn't know any more. Anyone have an update?

Oh no!. I hope he's ok.  If you hear anything PatB please let us know.

We pulled into the drive shortly after noon here. Thanks to everyone for such a great time. We are counting the days until next year already.

CJ, Marie got a text from Guy earlier today. He said he was OK but his truck and camper were totaled. He was more worried about his bows than anything.

My wife, daughter, grandson and I all had a fantastic time. It was great to see old friends and meet some new ones. One of the things I noticed this year was the abundance of kids. It was great to see so many young people and their families there. I think they had six groups of kids shoot the balloon shoot. Starting with the youngest and he nailed it. I don't have all the groups as I helped my grandson, but I've got some pictures.

Yes a big thanks to my dad for driving me there and packing the car with all my new staves! But also I would like to thank Bjrogg, Straightarrow, Dvshunter, RyanYoon, and Pearl for helping me make my first Stave bow! Dvs and Bj Really taught me how to tiller a bow correctly. I kinda mixed all of their practices into one bow! Also thanks to OsageOutlaw for giving me arrows and RyanYoon for letting me borrow his bow! without them I wouldnt have been able to win the bear across the pond shoot! (and Clint I love the splices on the arrow) I have so many people to thank so i will leave it at that! (for now!)

P.S. I cant seem to find my Tab, Im pretty sure that its around my house but if any of you ran into it I would appreciate it if you would tell me. Its a large, has 3 layers, black calfskin. Thanks!

Another great event. Laci and I had a good time. It was great to see everyone again. The weekend went by way too quick. I may have to make it a little longer next year. Laci was already after me to make her a new bow for the next shoot. I guess I better get busy. :BB

Ryan R suprised me with a new osage bow, thank you buddy i love it. Thanks to Guy and Mike and everybody that makes this event great.

I really do want to thank everyone who played a part in making this event what it is. I know the tremendous amount of work I see done is accompanied by a lot more I don't see done. Thanks so much Guy, Matt, Heather, Cindy, Bruce and all the people at Wilder Creek Conservation Club. I know there's names I'm forgetting and I'm sorry but a huge thanks to all. Also to people who donated to the raffle, auction or bid. To everyone who helped with the dinner. It is such a joy to attend this event and I'm already thinking of next year.
I only have a couple more pictures. I need to take some more. I received a bow from Paul. Thanks buddy sure glad I was able to come and get it in person. Really trilled to receive it. I'll try get some pictures soon. It's raining here again and a beautiful 52 for a high with a nice damp breeze off the big lake.
Frank once again made me a offer I couldn't refuse on his leftover staves. I'm thinking I'm might have to start giving classes to get a little help with all this Osage.
Speaking of Osage. Glad I got to see you for the short amount of time I did Clint. I hope you got back in time for your daughters graduation. I know your very proud of her and rightfully so.
Bill I really missed you big guy. I know times are extremely difficult now. I think of you all the time. Until we meet again sir.
Jeb hang in there buddy. It was nice to see you again. Your welcome to visit anytime.

Drove down with a couple of friends just to visit everyone. I had one thing that I had to do and that was to look up Pearl and return the selfbow that he gave my wife a couple of years ago.  It was the only bow she would use after receiving it from Pearl. She could shoot lights out with it. Pearl wanted me to keep it and pass it on to one of my grand kids but I insisted that he take it and give it to someone.

I ran into many good friends that had kind words to say about my wife, Pearl, BJ, Matt,Heather, Guy, Steve and Janna, Lost Nation Larry and many more as I walked around. Would have like to say hi to the Outlaw but I didn't run into him. I didn't stay long as I am still having a tough time but these folks and their kind words made the trip worth it.

Got the truck home today , not sure if I can patch it up or not will take a few days thinking thru the options .
Hope to get the camper home in a couple of days so I can cut it open and get my stuff out of it , if my bows weren't in it we probably would have just left them scrap it .
Y'all take care of yourselves and pray for all the folks that lost their homes in the storms its getting kinda rough around here

Sending a hearty thanks to all those who make Marshall happen. This was my first one and won't be my last. A special thanks goes out to my brother Steve whose patience and persistence in guiding me on this journey is to be applauded. Our plan was to have my yew stave roughed out so it could be tillered at Marshall under the watchful eye of experienced bowyers whom Steve met on the forum. After some quick advice from Pearly I continued to work on my bow preparing for final tiller. Soon my bow was on the tree then the stick and Pearly began to work his magic, we had a bend and it looked good, a smile from BJ, some more scraping and I was set. My first bow had a string on it and was ready for some arrows. I'll finish the bow here at home and hope to carry it in the deer woods this fall. Thanks again to all and a shout out to our camping neighbors, we"ll see you next year.

Pappy your right I am thrilled to add this one to my collection of PA bowyers bows.

Guy the important thing is your ok. I'm sure those bows are priceless but not as priceless as you.

Ray it was very nice to meet you and your brother Steve. I'm thinking it's the first time I've know a members real name before their user name. Woodstone. Going to have to remember that one. It was great to see you get your first selfbow shooting and your brother has a lot of enthusiasm. I'm guessing it runs in the family. Like Kyle said, I look forward to seeing it all finished up. It'd look really good laying on your first selfbow kill.

Kyle it's always good to see you. I missed your dad but your wife is terrific.

51 more weeks and counting. Can't wait to see you all again.
