Title: Falconry anyone?
Post by: Deerhunter21 on April 04, 2019, 08:53:29 am
Last year I tried to get my apprenticeship in falconry but, I'm too busy and don't have to money, but I still want to do it. Anybody else do or want to do falconry? just curious.  8) 8)

I did falconry when I was in my late teens. All hawks, never had a falcon. never got one hunting. Still have this sitting on my computer desk. I made it over 50 years ago. It's old and dusty like me. The Pliobond I glued it with is still holding. I actually met Frank Beebe and he gave me a European Gos that had broken it's leg and healed badly. I have number 573 (I think) of his book.

That's cool DC! How much did it cost and how did you get the money to do it?

Talk to JW. He is our local raptor guy. Somewhere there is a bald eagle flying around with a piece of his nose even... freedom tasted him.

It didn't cost anything except for gas. I trapped the birds myself. Chicken necks and backs were cheap. A little leather I got for a couple of bucks at the shoemaker(we had shoemakers back then). Frank Beebe's book was expensive. $75 in around 1965ish, about three days pay for a working man. My parents bought me that. One of my most prized possessions. I lent it to a friend and it came back with the back broken and jam sticking the pages together. I have to get that rebound.

I built a a 4x4x8 house out of 5 pieces of 1/4"ply. Like an outhouse but with the top half of the door being vertical bars. They have to be vertical, if they are horizontal the bird will hang on them all day and mess up their tail feathers. Go ahead and drill but remember this knowledge is 50 years old. JW is active so he will have the latest info.

Yeah, he litterally became one with a bald eagle. At least, part of his nose did.

My neighbor is a falconer. I use "his girls" as he calls them for models. John
