Title: got started! and I love it!
Post by: backtowood B2W on May 16, 2019, 11:38:27 am
Hi Rockers!
Lately i was on the hunt for some OO and had to drive through half Austria! At least I could combine it to meet another bowyer. He builds very, very! nice bows and it was a pleasure visiting him. So we traded some stuff and some flint as well. Knapping was always itching me - and I think I just found another playground. One of the reason for the little progress on simk´s bow. :-K
So I bought some copper and made me some tools, the ishi sticks work great, but my bloppers not so.
I started with a piece which had some frost cracks, but I was able to make some slabs with the last piece of this stone. Done with a hammer stones.
I worked a lot with glass, I guess this helped. Maybe that's why I´m not interested in glass as knapping material.
I wanna make some pics of my tools - I´m sure you know some tricks!

Incredible!
You got eight nice points from that one rock.
The way you slabbed it up first is pretty incredible too.
I would need at least five bigger rocks to get that many.
Keep rockin,

Missunderstanding!
The slabbed piece I still have - keep them for later - might be a little knife in there.
It was about 3 - 4 times bigger, it broke in 4 pieces when I hit a frost crack. The points are from this pieces.
The one I pictured was the first, where it worked out better. I watched Youtube videos from Paleomanjim and paleoman52 before!!
Really good vids, thank you guys if you are around this forum as well!

The Blopers ( Bats, baton ??? I don´ know the exact terms in English!) are solid copper, brass(too hard!), a too light and soft antler.
I have to hide the mounting screw and round of the top I guess, I did it it with one already.

Ishisticks: 2 copper tips, 1 antler split

2 Punches, a dried out silicon left over cut in half to support the stone int the hand.

The Hammerstones are from my 5 year old son. He is a excessive stone collector - don't know where he found them but they work really great - at least better than the copper. The little black dots are some very hard and crystallin inclusions

The stones I still have ... :KN

love the bird points  :OK

looks like your boppers are way too square
you need rounder edges to detach flakes

That's a tremendous start.  From your kit to your points, very impressive beginning.
I really like the picture of that spalled piece, I'm with 1442, that's really impressive work for starting.

Does PITH counts for Europe too?
Would like to join but nobody will have a point from a newbie I guess!
Tell me if you find any trade able point.

those are all tradeable points.
So long as it's about the best you can do.
Point trades really inspired me when I first started knapping. I would get a point and just marvel at it and hold it and wonder what it was like to be able to make something like that.
I encourage you to join the trade if it is allowed to be from Europe.
I'm gonna raise my anti to more than one point to increase my chance of getting one of your points.
