Title: Eastern red cedar board bows?
Post by: TimothyR on June 12, 2019, 05:52:29 pm
I have 2 erc boards. Will erc boards make a bamboo backed or even rawhide backed make a bow? Lots of knots in the boards. 1x4x8 boards. I've only worked erc in stave form. I can make me a very beautiful bow and arrow display out of it of it's not suitable. But if it will make a bow, even a light weight one,   I'm down to do that.

I made one, but my ERC was clear and amazingly straight quarter sawn board. Backed it with white oak just in case. Not sure about one that's knotty.

ERC with knots makes beautiful furniture but not bows.

This fellow makes a really nice static tip bamboo cedar cedar bows and has good luck with them. I looked at one but didn't notice if it had any knots, he said he didn't get any frets in the cedar from the bamboo.
