I would be interested but I would have to use an Asbell knife blank if that's OK.  I still haven't got my anvil set up yet and I have very little free time this summer.

Maybe I'll get in with a bone knife. Don't do stone and not much with steel so I guess that would be my only option.  ;D

I'd love to be involved!  Are there any particular rules for the design?

I'm still new on these boards, so I would have to ask folks to trust that I'll actually do it.

This board is all about trust , if you want in I think it's fine. No parameters but any hunting blade is generally acceptable

Is a sheath expected, too?  I'm not bad at leather, but that's not exactly my favorite part.

I'll have it done before August.

Don't know if I speak on behalf of anyone else, but  do what you feel most comfortable with.  When you get your name you can also search their past posts and interests to make a judgement call.  Some of the guys here are amazing leather craftsmen, and I could see how it may feel a little intimidating.  Likewise,  some may be weaker in that area, so if you want them to carry and use your blade they might need the sheath.

Personally,  if I get one of the bone or stone knives it will most likely go in my framed collection on the wall so a shesth wouldn't be necessary as a tool holder, except as part of the display.

Fair enough.  In that case, whoever I get should probably tell me if he's right handed or lefty.

I'm all eager anticipation.  I love trades and I love knives, so this is about perfect for me this month.

Thanks to all who have answered my first-trader questions.  I appreciate it.

Well, Bubby, that's one option, but not one I've done before.  I don't really like doing something for the first time as a gift or trade.  It means I'm planning to give something other than representative work.  I may end up doing something like that, but it will depend partly on who I draw for a recipient.

This is going to be fun.

bottom name sends to #1.

I'm sure enjoying looking at the progress pics.
I'm doing a stock removal process blade, and tried this piece that had some ancient flake removals off of one side.
It seems a little soft in the lighter colored areas though so I will most likely set this one aside and try another piece of stock or two or three before I decide which one to send.

I'm basically finished with my knife for Clint.
I started with one of those big beef dog bones sold at Wal Mart and other places. I sawed the knuckles off of each end(my dogs loved that) and boiled the mid section for about 30 to 45 minutes then removed the marrow and any tissue on the outside. I then split it in half lengthwise and use the best half for the bone dagger blade. The handle is a piece of Cholla that Jon(JEB) sent me a while back. I wanted to fill the holed in the cholla so I stuffed the center of the cholla with cotton first then used JB Weld as the filler and for hafting the blade. I also sinew wrapped the handle at the blade and added a cow horn but cap.
I shaped the blade first on the belt sander then use rasps and files then smoothed it with emery cloth and and 0000 steel wool. The cholla handle was initially sealed with super glue then Tru-Oil with a rub down with 0000 steel wool between applications. I still want to give it a few more coats then it's off to it's new home. The sheath I made from brain tanned scraps that NCLonghunter(Lyman) sent me a while back.
Here are a few pics. Hope you like it Clint.

So I used my Telsa time machine (Bill and Ted model) and went back to talk with Chief Looking Glass.  He really likes tacos, keep that in mind if you pay hjm a visit.  Anyway, he said he'd just wrap the handle in duct tape and be done with it.  He's very practical thst way.  So I thanked him for his time and left himsome tacos and a roll of duct tape.

Very stylish I think:

Ok who am I fooling?  Instead I'll clean up these ugly scalea i just epoxied together.   Five bonus points to whomever can guess both flavors of wood.

I'd blame the above post on the fumes in my shop, except I have no shop and it's raining in my outdoor work space right now.

Update on my progress:

Dieselcheese, if you don't want a friction folder, I'll keep this for myself and send you a puukko that I forged on the same day.  Honestly, I couldn't say whether the picture of the hot steel was this blade or the puukko, as they were from the same forging session.  But I like this one better.

Here is the trial-fitting of the pieces.  I'm using maple for the handle because it is a very stable wood that I know and trust.  Not as fancy to look at as some, but I love it for its utilitarian value.  Once the handle finish cures, I will work on peening the pins.  It may be ready to go as early as Wednesday.

Give it a try!  Worst that happens is you throw it away. No matter what, you come out with more knowledge.

I probably destroy 5% of my blades in deliberate destructive testing. Making a new sort of knife is really only another form of testing. The end goal is knowing exactly how a knife will perform because you test your blades. Here, it is more like testing your assembly process.

The tricky bits are placing the stop pin and peening the pivot pin. Stop pin has to be in the right place, pivot has to be secure enough to keep the blade from wobbling but not tight enough to make it a permanent fixed blade.

And you don’t have to make a sheath!

Yeah, stabilized lacewood and stabilized oak...supposed to be spalted oak but not seeing any spalting myself, but I do like the contrast.

The hard work is done, need to do a final edge polish and stitch together a sheath.  I'll break out the good camera and do a couple of completions pics at that time.   The cell camera really screws with things,  the liner material is more of a terracotta color but looks almost bright red through a phone camera.

Mine is completed.  Wanted ti try something different with the sheath.  Still trying to get used to the new camera so the white balance isn't quite right.

Final specs:
1095 @ 59-60 HRC
blade length 4.5" with a 4" cutting edge
3/16" thick
Handle is stabilized oak and lacewood, 2 solid brass pins and center corby rivet

Got the friction folder today.  Mr Woolery did a great job!  The pictures he posted just don't do it justice.  Light weight but a very solid  feel to it.   Opening and closing has just the right amount of friction, and well balanced in the hand.

Good job, sir!

I been out of commission for a while but I am back now.
I did some more stock reduction on a couple blades last night and it sure was nice to sit and knap for a while. Plan is to make a few blades then pick the one that will work the best and put a handle on it and all.
I felt out of practice but they didn't break so I was happy.
This blade was made from a bifaced rock from the New Mexico desert

Bubby - that handle is gorgeous!

I love that this exchange is giving people the reason to make something just to enjoy making it.  I know I was happy to do a knife that I didn't feel like I had to make to a pattern with the hope of finding a customer.  I made what I felt like making, knowing that what each of us was going to trade would be an example of our own aesthetic.

I think I'll just consider myself part of every future kith, as long as folks will still have me.  It was fun to make the knife, it is inspirational to see what everyone else is making, and I love the low stress of it.

I glued a blade in a handle and inset a small arrowhead made of citronell into the end of the handle.
Still got to smooth out the glue lines around the arrowhead and wrap the haft with sinew, then make some sort of holder and maybe a sheath of some sort.

I looked how far it would be to just drive up there and deliver it myself. It was 4083 miles and 80 something hours driving one way. ??? I think I will just mail it. :)

Wow!

I'm not sure what to say except thank you!  My wife is right next to me and her words were "that's gorgeous."  I couldn't say it better.

If you ever do make the trip up, come in the first half of June.  And we can fire up the forge together!

If I ever come down there, I'm going to ask if you will be around so you can maybe show me something about knapping stone.  Seriously, I'd set aside a couple of days just for that and I'll bring the refreshments, even.

alright so looks like i'm last to finish again and late again  :-\
i really struggled to feel satisfied with this piece aesthetically.
it started out with a blued guard and a bright blade, but i couldn't bring myself to be happy with how it looked so i ended up oil blackening the guard and darkening the blade with vinegar.
still have some niggling issues i cant quite put my finger on, but i've reached that point that i need to call it done or i'll screw it up completely.
more pics once i finish a sheath for it.

Get two thin boards(or one board thick enough to saw in two)trace your blade profile on both, mark depth and carve the half’s out and glue together then shape however you like
