Title: poetry
Post by: Pat B on July 08, 2019, 10:10:27 am
While going through the binder I'm offering as a giveaway below I found this poem I had written years ago. Thought y'all might like it...

The reason I quit shooting a compound
is the copious amounts of beard hair found
at the nock on the string
  from the arrows I'd fling
so a bandanna was used as a beard bound

...if anyone else has one, please add it here.

A fella on another site had made a particularly striking silk backed bow that I quite liked. So I wrote this goofy thing to play around a bit

ODE to thee oh ye O beatiful bow
How dost thy curves so beautifully flow,
Exqusitness such as yours is not easliy matched
Bend back my love and thine arrows cast.

Your backing of silk and your ivory tips
Words to describe you hardly can leave my lips
I reach to the depths of my very humanity
And know that you have given me sanity

Let the touch of your string bless my fingers
Your arrow to my mouth and the moment linger
Until your sometimes friend and I do part
And he make his impression on my mark.

May my aim be straight and true
As the skill that molded you
Oneday a bow like you shall be mine
And I'll need not St. Valentine.

Oh the bow for young and old
its limbs and power foretold
crafted and shaven
its given a haven
in the hands of a bowyer
who is smart and sober
who gave it life from a stick

Fear not Old tree, for it's not your last day.
I'll take good care of you and store you away.

I'll peal your bark, seal your ends and your back.
I'll check you occasionally as you cure on my rack.

I'll study your curves and remove any flaws.
Some I'll except, if character allows.

I'll remove everything from you that isn't a bow.
Give you a string and in you life will again flow.

Excellent, Guys.   We used to do limericks around St Patrick's Day here on PA. Steve Parker(Hillbilly) was one of the best at limericks.

Doesn't deal with bows, but harps and swords, by C.K. Chesterton.  Paraphrased a bit

His harp was carved and cunning as the Celtic craftsman makes,
Graven all over with shapes like many twisted snakes,
His harp was carved and cunning, his sword was prompt and sharp!

He was happy and gay when he held the sword!  Full sad when he held the harp!
For the great Geals of Ireland are the men that God made mad!
For all their wars are merry and all their songs are sad!

From the "Ballad of the White Horse"

The whole thing runs over 360 pages!  Almost a book!

Dang Jeff. Really? I was getting all kinds of ideas. Thought just maybe. Been awful hard making a living farming. Sounds like it's hard to make a living being a bowyer. I was kinda hoping maybe poetry was where it's at.lol

Wow, didnt think I could get too much worse at anything than I am at bow making. What a relief!
