It was a pleasure building this bow. The yew stave was nearly flawless and felt like it wanted to be a bow. I love working with sturgeon skins as well. It makes such an incredible looking backing. The bow is 66" long and pulls 47#@26". The handle is tanned beaver tail and the tip overlays are buffalo horn.

You're absolutely right, that sturgeon skin makes that bow look stunning! Great job!

Beautiful bow, I’m really into gentle profile RDs these days as well. Is that one of the staves I sent ya?

Thanks! It was one of yours. It was the narrower stave. Perfect for this bow.

Another beauty, Weylin.
Does the sturgeon skin add any performance or just very good protection?...and beauty, of course.

Thanks, Pat. Functionally Id' say it pretty much the same as rawhide, probably even tougher.

Great bow as usual. I as well pride myself in taking good photos, albeit cheap point and shoot camera. Some of your pics are 3.18MB I normally scale my pics down to about 250KB.

A masterpiece of function, and bow art. Perfect execution of a bowyer's skills.
-
Love it!! Those skins really set it off. I’m a fan of the beaver tail wrap and lacing job.

Those skins made me think I was looking at a photo of stars in a galaxy, haha. Truly beautiful, Weylin.

There's something magical about sturgeon skins. They are cosmic.

That bow is a thing of beauty.

Great bow!
And, NO extended unnecessary arrow shelf which in many cases spoil otherwiswe good work.
-
Excellent work sir!
-
How wide do you make your limbs with that design? Beautiful as always!
-

Thank you. I agree about the shelf. I'm always happy when I can talk people into shooting off their hand.

Thank you. I believe the limbs were about 1.25" or maybe a hair wider out to mid limb.
-
Absolutely beautiful bow. It looks as if it wants to be shot. God Bless
-
Stunningly beautiful work. If you need to get that out of your shop, I'll send you my address.
-
Great looking bow. I love that style of bow and the sturgeon skins look awesome!
-
Very nice work man! I was wondering if you could give me some more information on how you did your handle wrap?

Thanks, Patrick! I started with tanned beaver tail. I cut it to fit as your normally would with leather, though I find you have to be more precise with beaver tail because it doesn't really stretch. I used contact cement to glue a strip of thin leather along the edges where I punch the holes because beaver tail can tear out more easily than leather. I used some leather dye to get the color I wanted. As for the stitching, I used the basic lacing pattern that I learned from John Strunk when I worked with him. I hope that is helpful, let me know if I missed something you wanted to know.
-
Beautiful bow. Anyone know where you can get these skins?
-
Thanks Weylin! I couldn't quite place the type of leather that you was using. I knew it was natural texture but I thought it might be elephant. And maybe it is my eyes getting older bt from the picture I couldn't tell if it was a Strunk wrap or not.
Thanks again for explaining your process. I actually have a bunch of beaver tail, might give something similar a try on the bow I'm making for myself right now. Great work again bud!
