Title: Sinew backed Hickory short bow
Post by: bassman on August 12, 2019, 07:03:48 pm
This bow is 42 lbs. at 25 inch draw, and 52 inches long nock to nock. I shot a 425 gr arrow average of 6 shots at 145 fps. through the chrony. My longer bows shoot   quicker especially with heavier arrows, but this one did good for what it is.I made it to look on the antique side with wrappings, faded paint ,dark walnut stain. bumps, and bruises. Not one of my best tiller jobs, but the bow shoots nice with no hand shock. I can see were it could do some damage to a Buffalo  at nearly point blank range riding horse back.

Nice.  That sinew backing seems to allow a bit more draw out of the shorter bows.  Good speed as well
too.

Thanks Brogg. It is just another bow for the grandsons. That arrow in the pic is a full length 500 carbon, and the bow will pull another inch.Just wanted to try the Antique look, and check for speed on this one. Some of the antique native bows look nearly black from agewith paint worn off, even some sinew loss.

Stickmark, sinew  works great under tension with short bows. The Mongols, and our Natives used it as one of their main components when making bows . They new it,s value.

simk, I was always curious as to how well our natives made their bows ,and their potential as lethal hunting weapons .This bow  would be pretty similar to some of their Plains bows. That is what got me started in making bows. That bow for me will shoot with very respectable accuracy, and speed to 20 yds. Thanks

Deer hunter 21, I make shorties out of  staves that won't cut it to make a longer bow.I use what I have.Make a sinew backed shorty, and you will have a ball shooting it. Thanks

silent sniper, thanks. It was a fun bow build, and is a fun bow to shoot. I admire our natives, and their bow designs.

I love hickory sinew combos.  Nice one. I gave my last away so you’ve got my thinking about another.

It is hard to find a good source for sinew. My friend butchered deer until three years ago,so I had a good supply back then. Not anymore. Back then I sinew backed Osage, Black Locust, Elm, Hickory, American Horn beam, and even tried Walnut. Now ,when I do build a bow it is  longer self bows.  The same woods, but 58 to 63 inches long with my short draw.

Nice job, the grand son should love that, wished I had a grand dad that made me bows when I was a kid. :)

Thanks Pappy. We lived in different times back then. Most of us were just glad to have the necessaries. My first bow was a hand me down fiberglass bow.To me back then it was priceless. I know you could tell the same kind of stories as well as many others on here.
