This one here was tough to work and I got the preform smaller than I wanted to.
I broke a ear off and glued it back on

here's the preform and disaster notching

I decided I needed a bigger rock so I tried this one.

I was surprised at the colors and that I didn't break a ear off.
This was a tough rock too you can see where a crack got started running ahead of one of the notches at one point.

OUTSTANDING work. I don't know how you do it with that landscape gravel but you sure have it down. Do you cook the rock first?
