Title: Lehigh style barn gun
Post by: Mike Yancey on September 17, 2019, 07:16:21 pm
Here's a little 3/4'' 36'' 40 caliber straight barrel that Im starting from scratch for my oldest sons Christmas present. Got the barrel inlet today and the ramrod hole and channel drilled and done today.

I am also building one for myself in the same style with a longer a weight swamped barrel. I had it shaped and inlet for me by Cheney Looper at Primitive Arms Co. I will post pictures of it as I go as well.

This is the one that Cheney Looper did for me.

Im building two 40's in the same style at the same time. One is a pre carve the other from scratch. This is the tang that I just inlet this morning in the pre carve rifle. I like the fit and have barrel lugs marked out and ready to dovetail in the barrel. I like the short scratch's feel right now but they will both make great rifles. There is just something about the way that the little 36'' barrel one points and balances.

Coming together. One of these will most likely be going to New Mexico with me in a few weeks to Mountain Lion hunt.
My left shoulder is killing me and I cant lift or pull a bow over half draw. Have an appointment with a surgeon in December to see what needs to be done.

Very nice work!  Those look be very fine guns.  Get the shoulder fixed, interferes with drawing a bow, and aiming a rifle!  Good luck on the hunt!

Hey, Mike!  I enjoyed your squirrel story in PA this month.  Lots of homemade bows on here, but not too many homemade guns!  :)

Really nice, I am drawn to plain guns, never made one but might in the future. My main deer hunting gun started out fancy but after ten or more years in the woods it has been dinged up so much it appears a bit plain now. I like it that way with the character and all.

Looks very nice.  I agree on admiring it’s simplicity.

The architecture speaks for itself without any fancy work on it. Nicely done. That should compliment the squirrel hunting article from this month's issue quite nicely.
When you taking him to that hollow Mike?

Wow.  If it shoots as good as it looks, the critters better look out.

Got it sighted in for him with a round ball. Worked the shot up by filling down the front sight until it walked in. The last three were in the same hole just a hair left.

The trigger pull on this little rifle feels so good! This is going to be a baby doll of a rifle when I get it finished.

I tried the REAL bullets, they shot pretty good but i need to work on a load more, I used 60gt of 3F which might have been a bit stout.

The larger bullets didn't do well with 60gr, they keyholed through the target at 50 yards.
