Title: Armadillos
Post by: Eric Krewson on October 06, 2019, 12:47:44 pm
Here in NW Alabama we had an influx of armadillos starting about 15 years ago, they are everywhere here now and were a problem when I hunted southern Tn.

Just wondering how far north they have gone, they are unfazed by our sub teen temps where I live. I have seen them out rooting on a 20 degree day.

What is the northernmost location you guys have seen them?

My wife and I just drove back from Savannah today and saw armadillos up above Spartenburg, SC just below the the mountains. I haven't seen them up here in the mountains yet.

Armadillos carry leprosy.

I knew about that, and that keeps me from messing with them. However,  I wonder if just because they CAN, how many DO? Ticks have that meat allergy,  but I havent got it yet ( though a forum member here has got it and I hope the effects go away ).

I swear I’ve thought I have seen them along I65 in Kentucky between bowling Green and the Cumberland parkway. I can’t be for sure though since I didn’t stop and check them out.

Someone ran over an armadillo just up the road from my house. I'm only about 15 air miles south of Pat.

Got lots of them here in Mid Tennessee now, just showed up the last 4 or 5 years but seems the population is growing fast. See them up side down on the road all the time.  :) Other than that haven't really seen much damage from them yet. :)

Everybody always mention the leprosy issue with 'dillos. The thing is, leprosy is not contagious. We've been catching and eating them in Florida for as long as I can remember. taste like pork.

I've been wondering about that a little the last few years.  I heard the bit about them carrying leprosy as a boy and took it for gospel.  Eventually I realized that there were too many folks that eat them for it to be a major concern

Josh, back when I was young and broke we always had one in a pot of rice in hunt camp. Easy to get quick.

People get vaccinated for leprocy so i think that, that may have something to do with it and also it says that 95% of people wont get leperosy if they come into contact with it
