Title: Black Locust RD
Post by: leonwood on December 03, 2019, 09:05:24 am
This was a pretty clean and straight stave which for that very reason stayed in my pile for a few years. A few months ago I decided to try a few bows from my better staves and since I only tried "normal' recurves with black locust I felt it was time for a reflex/deflex model.

After roughing the bow out I clamped it on a 2x4 with a block underneath the handle and started heating the handle area with a heatgun. Took me about 15 minutes to deflex it enough and left it overnight to cool down. Reflexed tips where boiled and set with dry heat the next day.Chased a ring on it and tillered it to brace.

Added some extra reflex in the outers during heat treating and tillered it to 45@28.This black locust keeps the heated reflex pretty good!
I don't really like the pale color of fresh black locust so I stained the bow with my "osage scrap stain" and finished it with cheap acrylic spray.

Specs:
Wood: Black LocustLength: 64" ntn
Draw weight: 45@28
String: 8 strand fastflight
Stain: Osage scraps soaked in ammonia

All around top notch bow. Impressed you deflexed that handle with a little dry heat.

Thanks for the compliments!

Impressed you deflexed that handle with a little dry heat.
I do this with osage and black locust only. Tried it with yew and some white woods without succes so with those I cut a wedge out of the handle to reduce the bending thickness

Classy.  Your bows are recognizable as your bows.  Like this one a bunch.

Leonwood that is a great looking bow for sure. Hope you don’t show at a flight shoot that I am at. Cause I am pretty sure that’s a contender! Arvin

Thanks! One of my goals is to attend the flight shoot at Wendover some time, will take me a while to save up enough money though so don't expect me there any time soon

What a beauty.  Elegant work.  I don't think I've seen a grip like that before.  You come up with that?

Thanks! And nothing special about the grip, it's just a slight bulbous grip with a little groove for the hand cut out so it fit's better in the hand. No too much so it will still be allowed in our "historic bow" class for 3d competitions. Wrap is part of the sleeve from an old jacket ;D

What a great bow. By the way what is "osage scrap stain" ?  Using tannin inside osage scraps ? if so can i use any material that contains tannin ?

Thank you!

It is just that. I put the osage I scape off during tillering in a bucket with vinegar and ammonia. It will work with any high tannin woods like oak and black locust as well.
It still amazes me how good this stain works though!
