If I don't screw up, this one might turn out ok. First pass each side. Tried to space my flakes out a bit to have some ridges for second pass.
Bjrogg
-
Second pass. It's still in one piece.
It already drew a pretty good amount of blood.
Bjrogg
-
Third pass still ok.
Bjrogg
-
I think that'll work

Wow. Knapping is a skill that has always baffled me. I've only seen it done once, and it looked like magic to me. That knife looks like it could skin an elk, no problem. Nice work!

Nice work, BJ!

Looks good Brian. Now get that on the end of a cholla handle.

Thanks WB. It still baffles me at times to. I'm really not that good at it, but I pretend. Sometimes it works and sometimes it I have two small points.
Your right it is magic.

Thanks Jerry

How did you know that was my next step Jon? ;) Thanks so much for everything. Hope you have a nice Christmas.
Bjrogg

Oh Ya, Lookin good, Bob
-
Thanks Bob. Really enjoyed this one. I'll try to keep posting as I put a handle on.
Bjrogg
-
You did a great job on that knife. Thanks for sharing the process.
-
That's going to look really nice
-
Thanks Rick. Believe me, I was half expecting to be posting a broken blade. Glad it kinda worked. I got a bit side tracked now. Went out to my secret cedar patch in search of my snoopy Christmas Tree. It's a tradition that goes back to about 1984.
I'll try to make finishing this one and posting the progress a priority.
Bjrogg

Here's my Christmas Tree. Some assembly required. It's more like arranging flowers than putting up a tree. Sometimes the Scrooge in me wishes I just had a artificial tree.
Bjrogg
-
Assembly complete and lights on. Now everyone else can put decorations on.
Bjrogg
-
I glued a piece of Black Walnut and English Walnut together for the button and clamped it in vice overnight.
Bjrogg
-
Then I cut a grove in handle for tang and tapered end of handle. It fits nice with handle lined up straight with blade. That's all for tonight.
Bjrogg
-
It's not glued yet. Just a dry fit. Hopefully tomorrow I can glue button on, shape it and finish halvting blade.
Bjrogg
-
That is really cool. :)
-
Very nice! Re: the tree - Ho! Ho! Thwarp! If I put it up I got to take it down!
I like the knife! Good job! Have to send you a bit of elk antler to see what fits!

There got my grandkids tree done now to. Starting to get in the spirit.
First thing I did was mark button for end cap on cholla handle. Then cut it out on band saw. Leaving the line. Then I mixeda little JB weld and applied it to end of cholla handle. Then put bottom on. I want the English Walnut to the outside. I think it's going to have some interesting grain.
Bjrogg
-
After the jb weld cured awhile I shaped button on my floppy wheel sanding wheel. Taking my time to avoid leaving burn marks. Then I hand sanded it a bit. Normally I would even file it to a shape that fit my hand and the shape of the blade but this one already looks and feels good. After I sanded I hit it with some OO steel wool. Then I gave it a coat of tru oil. I'll give it a few more before halvting blade.
Bjrogg
-
Nice!
-
I gave the handle three coats of tru oil with a 00 steel wool buff between. I then used JB weld and put it on the groves I cut in cholla. Then slid blade in place. I just used a small amount of JB weld first. I've used pine pitch but I've had problems with leaving inside parked vehicle in the sun. Now I at least put a dab of epoxy. I can put pitch over top if I want. This one I just let first dab set. Then mixed another dab and filled in any places I wanted to.
Then I stuck it in my corny picture and here it is.
Bjrogg
-
Looks real good! Hope my cholla does as well!

Way to go Brian, thanks for sharing. I the words of Tony the Tiger, Looks Greeeaaaat!. John
-
I have to say that is the nicest cup of corn I have ever seen, lol
OK, OK, You did that rock and cactus justice.
-
Very fine, BJ! These many years into flintknapping and I still stink at doing that type of flake over grind work. I've seen guys at knappins make it look like a 5 year old can do it, too! Ha. Nice knife nice tree.

Thanks John. Maybe Tony will like my corn flakes.lol

Thanks Jon. It was some very nice materials to work with. Really enjoyed this one every step of the way

Thanks Steve. I'm still a long ways from as good as you or those others. I get by. But it is amazing to watch people who really know what they are doing.

I got busy at other things that just always seem to pop up and get in the way. I'm hoping to make a stand soon and I'll try to add it to this post. Might take a bit for some inspiration. Might even have to do a little Beach combing
Thanks everyone for the kind words and looking

Oh Oh, I see some drift wood coming. Land locked folks may not know what that is.
-
Fantastic job with that one, Brian. You've come a long way chipping.
-
Thanks Eddie. I really still have a lot to learn. This knapping really has a way of keeping me humble.lol
Yup Jon, you guessed right. I'm still putting stuff together, but it might be this combination. I've got a couple pieces of driftwood I received compliments from the big lake. Thinking about using this one.
Bjrogg
-
Maybe mount it somewhere around here
Bjrogg
-
Maybe use these antlers somehow
Bjrogg
-
Could you fix the antlers into the driftwood?
-
Could you fix the antlers into the driftwood?
Yes WB. That's my vision. If I use this combination. I'll cut them to fit where I want them and hold knife how I'd like it displayed. Then probably clear epoxy to fasten them to driftwood.
I'm still not sure I like this driftwood. I'd like to seal it with something, but everything I try turns it so much darker.
Bjrogg
-
I put one coat of linseed oil on for now. I'll probably buff it and put several more on.
Bjrogg
-
Then I cut my antlers and dry fit them. This is my vision. I kinda like it now.
Bjrogg
-
Nice. :OK
-
Best stump of wood ive ever seen! good job bj!!! ;) ;)
-
Brian, I like the idea of the wood base and antlers. But to me the driftwood base is too large and takes away from the knife. Maybe a smaller piece of wood. .... Just my two cents, but who am I. Just an old stoner. John
-
I know what your say Stoner. I was thinking that before I tried it. It's a pretty good sized knife and I think it'll be ok. If it doesn't I'll make something else.
Bjrogg
PS anyone ever use linseed oil? Does it dry hard?
-
Linsseed oil soaks in, I find tung oil as a better alternative. I've used tung oil as a wet sanding application and creates its own filler for a smooth glass finish. John
-
The linseed oil did really soak in. I've never tried it before. My brother was cleaning out his house and this can was left from the previous owners. I'm thinking it's pretty old but I don't think it was ever opened and seems to be good yet.
I'm thinking Frank from American Pickers might like this one. Nice colors and good subject matter. To bad for him cause I'm keeping the can.
Bjrogg
Ps I like the looks but I'm wondering if it will just draw dust or if it will harden. Also wondering if my epoxy will stick to it.
-
if you haven't drilled the holes for the antlers, it shouldn't be a problem to get bond. Cannot imagine listed oil can penetrate that much.
Very nice work Brian. Cannot wait to see it all together!
Ah, yes and the tree is a great idea too, have a big thuja tree in my garden, and I will copy this next year. Have it already bought >:( and hidden.
In my opinion such a waste every year...
-
Thanks B2W. It really soaked up a bunch of this stuff. I'm guessing about 6 ounces in the two coats. If I warm it up with my heat gun it seems to draw it back out of the wood.
Bjrogg
Almost forgot about my Christmas tree addition to this post. Glad you liked it.
-
Well I think I'm pretty close to done here. I might do a little more finish work yet but I'm pretty happy.
Stoner I totally understand your concern with the size and taking away from the knife. I shared it but I gotta say this is my favorite knife and stand I've ever made. The pictures really don't do it justice. It is almost more of a center piece though it just looks cool from every angle.
I really enjoyed doing this thread sure glad I didn't screw it up. Thanks everyone for looking
Bjrogg

Try again
-
Last pass
Bjrogg
-
That is real nice! Good display of two types of art!
Hawkdancer
-
Thanks Jerry. I think the two pieces of art go very well together to.
Bjrogg
-
Looks great, beautiful display of craftsmanship right there.
I have one of those linseed oil cans from my fathers work bench back in Michigan. Just like the looks of it on a shelf with the rest of my archery stuff. John
-
Thanks Stoner. I usually make a knife and stand up for our Christmas gift exchange. I showed this one to my dad and step mom last night. They've both been watching the whole process. My step mom said I couldn't give this one for our gift exchange. She said it was to nice. Now I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. It'd sure look great in some fancy hunting lodge. I've got a few ideas.
Bjrogg
PS my 5 year old grandson was just fascinated with the knife. I told him he had to be very careful with it that it could break just like glass. He very carefully looked at it from every direction. Amazing cause he's pretty rough with most everything. He is a young artist though. He's a natural. I love looking at his drawings and crafts
-
Wow, wow, wow. Beautiful work. (A)
-
Nice gnarly display. I like how the entire process went.
-
Thanks WB glad you like it
Thanks RickB. I enjoyed the entire process. Glad it worked out. I've tried doing build alongs before but always forget to take pictures or guff something up.
I normally don't name my knives. This one seems to have a common theme that people see in it's stand. I showed it to my buddy Randy yesterday and he really liked it. He was sitting there watching me work on another project and he says. I'm not trying to put it down in anyway or take anything away from it, but sitting here it just looks so cool. It kinda looks like a petrified Buffalo turd.lol I did literally have to laugh out loud. I've been told it looks like a petrified woolly mammoths foot and a hippopotamus.
I think I am going to name this one. I'll affectionately call it "Buffalo Chip"
Bjrogg
Thanks for looking everyone and as my buddy Randy says. It looks so cool, but like something you wouldn't want to step in.
-

Well, quite apart from any resemblance to fossilized bovine excrement, I do as a rule avoid stepping on obsidian blades...
-
That's a beautiful set, BJ. 8)
-
Thanks Pat
WB so maybe the Obsidian blade acts like a deterrent to keep anyone from stepping in the Buffalo Chip
Bjrogg
-
looks so cool - love the whole set!
hopeully I can find some of this cactus in Mexico this summer... 8)
