Title: Red oak board bow
Post by: RyanY on February 12, 2020, 06:14:52 pm
Been a while since I finished a bow so I pulled out a board bow I had roughed out to warm up for TN. Definitely rusty, especially in the tillering department. I was surprised how well red oak took the heat treating. This one has a crowned back. 64" ntn and just a smidge over 35#@28". Built up the handle with leather but the layers move a bit so it's not the best for a smooth finish in the fades. Involved some new experiences for me so it was a fun build.

Nice bow Ryan. Don’t worry about Pearl. You got years of shooting that bow before he gets at those windows. ;)

I thought you preferred Osage trim?  ;D

Thanks for all the kind words friends! I’ll try and post bows and projects when they finish up.

I should have used osage to begin with. Maybe I wouldn't have to replace it already!

And no, I don't want to shoot it! Last time I shot one of your board bows I about killed a man. I believe it was poplar.

Long story short. There were about 10-12 guys standing in front of a 4 x 4 foam target. Ryan made a poplar board bow so several of us took turns shooting it. I had shot an arrow or two and turned to chat for a second while loading arrow 3. I fired it off and guy popped up from behind the target. Nobody had seen him walk back there to either collect an arrow or do something to the target. Very sobering moment.

After that moment, I think that was the last time a Target was ever set up there. I told Guy that's got to be the worst place for Target. About 40 yards behind it is the main path to get on the course. Just too many people there cutting through to the pavillion.

Sorry Ryan. Back to talking about trim boards

I totally forgot about that! That was terrible. Just the most gut wrenching feeling after that happened.

That is a beautiful bow.  Is that bow not backed?  I didn’t know that was possible with a board bow?

Not backed. I never back my board bows unless I want to do a wood combination. Board bows don’t need to be backed if the grain is straight.

I am new to this.  You are looking for the grain running parallel to the bow.  Like opposite of a stave?  And you get the boards from the hardware store?  I would like to try this.  Is there a good board bow build along here anyone knows of?

Hey and also what are the measurements of the with and taper of your bow?  Do you keep the outer part of the limbs stiff?  I am waiting for staves to season and would LOVE to make a bow similar to that.  It is stunning... oh and you used a heat gun and a form to reflex before tillering?
Thank you,
Greg

Look in the How To's and Build along section, 4th thread down. No better instruction to be found IMO.

Ryan,

That is absolutely gorgeous. What finish did you use? Did you stain it before sealing?

Thanks,
Mark
