Hello and welcome! This is the spot to be for the next few days! -C-
It's not as good as real life get togethers, but hopefully it gets enought of us together building bows at the same time all around the world. Dont be shy about posting things that you are working on. Even if you can't post pictures join in the conversation. Everyone from new to old is welcome to this gathering, so let's have some fun!
-
Good idea Dave.I'm in the middle of tanning a couple of bobcats right now but need to make a kids bow for a land owners' daughter that I cut BL from. She shoots a compound right now.
-
Unfortunately I am being made to work right now. When I get home tonight I will be chasing a ring on these billets and readying them to be spliced together. They have some color to them and are spotless. Should make somebody a fine bow.
-
Nice looking billets Pearlie.
-
I have some billets too but their super weird. ones super thin and one gets super narrow. i will probably splice and then glue on a handle. whats a good glue for a splice because i only have 5min epoxy, JB weld, and gorrilla wood glue.
-
You will get lots of answers to that question. I feel there is only one glue available to use on splices and backings, Smooth On EA-40. I've used Titebond 3 and it worked, but it was an incredibly runny mess and most of my glue ran out the bottom. I had to put painters tape on the back of the splice to act as a stopper.
-
I actually dont know now... I can't go out to get stuff... would the 5-min epoxy or gorilla glue work if i add a glue on handle (im gonna have too). if not ill just work on a stave.
-
actually, i dont wanna make a bow with a less than desirable splice.
-
This is a great idea Dave. No bow building for me at the moment. I’m trying to get my old planter working. It’s just new enough to be pretty complicated and old enough to be making trouble. I can usually get it figured out but I had to call the experts. I think the young man that came out yesterday was even more confused than I was.
Hopefully I can get this figured out soon. The fields are almost ready.
Bjrogg
-
whew!! no scary smile this time!!! I hope you can figure it out BJ
I can't tell you guys enough, even if its over the internet, how much i love hanging out and talking with you guys. meeting you guys in person was amazing!!!!!! my day is getting better and better! thanks guys!!
now... i gotta do some homework as fast as i can and chase a ring on a osage stave ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
just like the marshalls, people slowly start to wake up (lol)
-
I might as well join in since we're stuck at home and the weather is brutal.
I have started a red oak pyramid bow. 65"NTN, target draw is 36-38# @ 28". I see why people like these, once the limbs were cut to thickness they feel like they are already mostly tillered and are itching to become a bow with a nice, even bend.
The tips were left wide because I was planning to flip the tips and wanted them to not twist in the jig. Because I had never done this before I figured some testing was in order, so I cut some test strips to the same thickness as the limbs and boiled them. One failed experiment in the books and experience gained. Red oak doesn't bend, it breaks... First piece I boiled for 15 minutes and it broke before bending more than maybe 30 degrees. Second one I boiled for 25 minutes and it made it maybe 45 degrees before cracking sounds were heard. I kept going with it just to see how it would fail. That is the next pic.
Lesson learned, red oak bows stay flat from now on. Weather has been terrible the last few days so nothing more has been done besides narrowing the tips and gluing on tip overlays. Hopefully I will get at it again today and through the weekend.

You can add a bit of full limb reflex with a heat gun if that's what you are after. It will handle that.
For the future, my basic rule for static tips is 30 minutes of steam per half inch of thickness.
-
I usually go 15min per 1/4” so that’s right where Pearl is. I don’t know about Red Oak, but some woods bend easier than others. Osage bends great. Hop Hornbeam I usually double the length of time steaming. Also a metal backer on the belly side of recurve helps to keep it from lifting grain. Rounded corners to.

On this one I just wanted to flip the tips, similar to this bow by High-Desert:

For the future, my basic rule for static tips is 30 minutes of steam per half inch of thickness.
I wasn't steaming the pieces, they were actually in the boiling water. They were 7/16" thick, so 25 minutes of boiling should have been enough on the second one. I based my efforts on this video from Weylin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JllYjPwi7Wc
I can't say I have been impressed with the oak so far as a bow material. The spongy early growth rings seem very fragile and that is where the bend tests failed. I think I will stick to maple once I have used up the oak I have on hand, it was generally nicer and more consistent to work with.
Mark
-
I have no use for oak other than trim and cabinetry. Hickory or maple boards are head and shoulders above oak.
-
The more I use red oak the more I like it. Definitely has its flaws and I think there may be some more variability to its integrity compared to other woods. Good pieces seem as good as any other wood for making bows. It’s also downright beautiful which is the reason Pearly wants all his trim to be oak! ;D
-
Red oak is for cabinets.
White oak is another matter.
-
I've made six bows in 2020 and three of them were for the kids.....one for each of them. They're 3, 8, and 11. The 3 year old got a tiny hickory flatbow because her favorite movie is "Brave" where the heroine is a great archer.
(https://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b36/flntknp17/B039E2E5-D387-4B3D-9D34-5A68B9598B9E_zpsij8v1dfm.jpg) (https://s16.photobucket.com/user/flntknp17/media/B039E2E5-D387-4B3D-9D34-5A68B9598B9E_zpsij8v1dfm.jpg.html)
The 8 and 11 year olds got matching bamboo backed hickory bows with padauk tips and risers. Both are Perry reflexed and the smaller one (50" and 54") has slightly flipped tips. Both finished with tung oil and now have leather grips and arrow shelfs.

I've noticed you like it and maybe I just need to adapt to what it needs, but so far I'm not a fan. It could be that I expected it to do something it just isn't going to do with the bending. Once I get to tillering this one and can shoot it (assuming it gets that far, I'm far too inexperienced to be certain of anything relating to bows yet) maybe I will change my mind. It is significantly cheaper than maple which is a nice bonus.
This piece has thin early wood rings and thick late wood rings along with pretty straight grain, which is why I bought it. Red oak does look very nice when finished, usually with much nicer character to the grain than the maple.

And to think, I was there at his first visit to Mojam... :)
-
Here are a few pics of a bow I made for a customer. 45#@27" osage pyramid with a bit of character. As a rule I don't like cutting shelves in selfbows but this one had a perfect wiggle in the handle grain that suited a pistol grip and shelf and that is what the man wanted.
Deer bone overlays over a thin slice of clear buffalo horn.
It shot around low 170's with 10 gpp. It was a nice resilient stave :)
-
Couple more pics.
-
Double unbraced photo...one of them was meant to be this one haha
-
I like that green leather, rarely see that.

Sure were Paul! It’s been a long time. I’d like to make it down again some time. :)
-
Nice job Bownarra. Finally get to see one of your bows ;D ;D
-
Here is another I finished up for a week or so back.
Boo backed ipe with a tapered greenheart core. Stacked ipe to build up the handle and an ipe powerlam.
55# and good speed.
Pretty buffalo horn arrowpass and nock overlays.
-
Couple more :)
-
Here's one more then DC ;)
I'm going to be rejuvenating the finish on this one tomorrow. This bow is in my personal favourite top 3. Smoking fast, zero shock like you don't even know you've let go of the string type no shock :)
I think i'll chrono it before I do the finish as I can't remember the actual numbers.
-
Is the last one a hornbow?
-
Y'all pu me to shame. I'm uploading pics now of a stave I have that I need help on. I don't know how to proceed.
I have a 76" white oak stave with twist in one limb. I know white oak heat bends and steam bends. The question is how to do it with no tools?
-
My project. A 60" Yew bendy. I've never done a bendy handle that I remember so should be interesting. The stave is one of those long tapered splits that you get when things don't go quite right. It's 3" wide at one end and 3/4" wide at the other and the thin end was split in three spots. By the time I cut the splits off it was 60.5" long so I decided on a bendy. It's got a couple of wiggles but no knots. It must be about 80-90 RPI because I had to use a 10x lens to see them. It was cut in 2014 so it should be dry.

I'll play. Couple recent ones. 66" ntn with 2 hole osage. no heat or correction. bad checks and narrow in the handle so laminated both sides and capped it. 45ish at 26.
Black locust 61" ntn single scalloped. 50+ at 26"

Hi everybody. Sorry I still got the stink on me. I’ll try to stay downwind. No since get all squeaky clean for this job anyway. Putting white tail overlays on this one. Cut a couple pieces of antlers close with hacksaw. Then over to my floppy wheels grinder. Close enough to glue this one on.
Bjrogg
Love the smell of burnt antler in the evening
Nice smile there Dave. Looks like you got some sun
-
I think the beard stained you face dave! Now you a full redhead! Lol just kidding. How long did it take you to post that?

It took me almost 20 minutes to post that pic, bit I'll take some while I'm working and post this evening all at once.
Looking good Bj!

Arnt you gonna miss me asking you every 5 min how my tiller looks david? :)
Maybe next year ;)

I was sanding my bow and got a big nose full of Osage. I let out a big sneeze and I hear my neighbor holler out "covid"

Got it braced and put a few arrows through it. Now it's time to work on the tips.
-
Good to see everybody tonight..........even you Russell the Wrestler. Lots of nice work going on. Great tiller Paul, love the grip Mikey. Im going to mix up a vodka and cran and chase some rings.

Well as Dave can tell ya'll, whenever I manage to attend a gathering I bring along my tools, a couple staves, the fold up shaving horse :BB and one, (or two...), of my Wife's buttermilk pies. :)
So, since she hasn't gotten it baked yet I guess I'll be a little late gettin' in. :-[

I should be at the KY tradfest right now. Guess I'll hang out with you guys instead. I've been cleaning up the last of my osage staves and started on a couple of bow racks to hang my selfbows on.

Lots of cool stuff posted already. Nice looking bows fellas.
-
time to pass the Pie Dave...
this one will need your eyes to finish the tillering tomorrow...
-
Spent a couple hours tonight sanding on my bow for the 2020 bow swap. I have two bows going that can be swapped.....I'll just need to finish them both and see which is better. I REALLY don't enjoy sanding, but it has to be done so tonight was the night. Done now thankfully and I will stain it later this evening.

Thats a beaut flntknp, bamboo backed ? Cant wait to see what Aaron posts.Lotsa true craftsmen comin outta the woodwork. Thats some super snakey osage OO... thats a wavy gravy bow Bob
-
Indeed, very clean finish work Matt.
-
Hey clint! Welcome to the party! This weekend was going to the missouri guys get together to. I guess this is what we get. -C-
That snakey thing looks good Bob. I've got no pie made, but an adult beverage was consumed.
Nice work Chris. I might try and splice something tomorrow. I have some glue and was thinking about a Bob glue up with some bullets that I cut from a stave. Bbn I could use the practice at splicing.
Flint, I think I'm going to end my might with some sanding before I post pics tonight. I hate sanding to. That's when my OCD kicks in. Welcome to the party.
Nice ro see you to Knollie. I worry about men of your age I times like these. I hope you are sheltering in place and staying out of the wife's way in your shop.
-
Finally getting around to posting. You guys are turning out some great work already. Just finished up a hickory bow this week. Just got it ready for the beavertail rest & side plate. Then glue & stitch on my dyed elk leather grip. The bow was fire hardened and dyed with aniline brown & black dye then finished with some spar varnish in a rattle can.
-
Working on a a few composites tonight
-
Great to see all you guys. You to Clint. I don’t even care if your making a bow rack for compounds, it’s great to see you.
I’m going to have to go home. Gotta get my planter fixed tomorrow. I think I got it figured out.
Did finish my tips and got em glued on.

Dang Steve-O!!! Killer piece of hickory. Love the reflex, spot on tiller.
A-a-ron, nice to see what Ive heard about. looks like patience wins in that game.

-
Thanks for the compliments guys. I've learned so much from you guys in the past few years and I'm very grateful for all the knowledge shared on this site. You guys are awesome.
Got the grip stitched up so I'll call this hickory bow done. Not my best stitching job but it'll do. Next I'm on to some boo arrows and an osage bow for my girlfriend.
-
I got it basically roughed out! It’s coming together! Should the width I rough it out to be .5” with the limbs being 1.5” wide? This is turning out great!

More pics

Cool looking projects guys. Aaron I want to see more of these Composites very curious. Started with this one tonight see how late I want to stay up might put a string on it

Going for no heat and no correction

GLued some overlays on a sassafrass bow from a stave jonw gave me.
took a pic of the sunset here in eastern Missouri. We had a few sprinkles here tonight. I had the shop door open and the music up to match the neighbors all outside and social distancing.

I heated this failed bow stave that is going to get a bamboo backing tomorrow hopefully.
I flattened the boo with a farriers rasp, traced it out over top of the old bow, then cut it out with the bandsaw. I have to thickness the boo again tomorrow then glue it on.

here it is off the caul.

You are plenty thick there Russel. Check you limb width tapers compared to the grain of the wood in your limbs. It looks like your thickness could be a little more even...unless there are some knots you are avoiding. Other than that, it looks like a great start.
-
Hey guys gorgeous night eh? Stars out everywhere! Big moon aswell. Im inside steaming up my hickory to recurve! Ive been seeing a lot of pretty bows here!
-
Is that a jar of shine?

Sheesh! Wow! I'm gonna be watching this!

Went right from floor tiller to low brace. Definitely need some tweaking but this old knotty piece might actually make a bow

This is a black locust mildly deflexed recurve. Sinew backed. Beautiful wood that I got from an estate in Scotland. Shame there is no more as b.locust is one of my favourite woods.
54# @ 27". 60"
High 170's fps @ 10gpp.
I've pulled this one out to get it finished up properly with a nice grip.

Bonarra and Ryan, those profiles look sweet.

OK, got a good, strong cup of tea in me and I think I can say something coherent. Maybe.
Great thread, you guys. I come here just for the inspiration, sometimes. It's amazing what some of you accomplish. Russell (two Ss, two Ls, just like the street I grew up on), good on ya for chasing that ring! Hope it makes a bow.
I've been working on tillering my very first bow build, a 53" ntn oak board bow for my daughter. Pyramid style; backed with linen canvas, going for 20#@ 20". The board was somewhat marginal, but I can't get to the lumber store for a better one. Thus the backing.
I put a very small, longitudinal crack down one of the limbs when roughing it out, working with cruddy tools. Planning to give that spot a wrap of linen once it's tillered. I have it to 20# at 15" so far. It has a pretty decent hinge on the top limb, so I'm slowly rasping down the stiff spots. A couple times it has made a scary *tick sound when I've strung it. Should that scare me, or par for the course?
Not sure if I achieved coherence or not. Maybe another cup of tea.
Have a great weekend, my friends! Thomas
-
Glad you posted those pictures Dave. That one of Jerry is great. :D
Behind Ed's left elbow I see Rob and in the back ,looking past the right elbow, there's Eric.
-
ugh, of course i wake up with a hurting back, stiff shoulder, blisters galore, and a bad headache. time to get Tylenol out

Except for the blisters, those are my morning vital signs and breakfast... ;)

Ah, to be a kid again...I can still do most of the things I did at 25, but I hurt a lot more the next day. ;D
-
yeah im not worried about the other stuff but what worries me is my back. about a year ago i broke my back and we didnt get it checked out (untill this year) so i wrestled with a partially slipping disk and a fracture. then detassled, and then wrestled again. i just gotta watch how my back is feeling.
-
Yeah, you have to take care of those structural body parts. You're going to need those later.
-
Yeah Russell, take care of your back. You'll thank yourself for doing so in the years to come. Bownarra & Ryan those profiles do look excellent. Dave, those tips are shaping up nicely. Dave, also thanks for starting this thread. It's great to follow along. Time for me to start making yeller shavings.
-
Here it is right off the caul.
Taking a break to do some other things around the house, but I"ll be checking in.
Thanks Steve, I"ll be it gets pretty busy tonight to.
-
Bow is looking very good Ryan. I got my splices cut and rain started. Its cold and wet up here today.
-
Looking good Dave. I think with a little more effort you could have it better off the caul, but still not bad.
-
Everybody's kickin arse today, love it. Stuck at work but will git into somethin when i git home.
-
I wrapped this one up 4-5 days ago. Im dropping weight in my old age and needed a lighter bow. It 42 @ 29, 64" ntn. Holds a solid 3.5" of reflex and shoots lovely with a bare string.
-
Woof! Thats just sweet buddy... I'm sure you notice that i tried to copy that signature Pearly grip ;D
-
I can still do most of the things I did at 25, but I hurt a lot more the next day. ;D
Amen to that.

Very nice. I'm extremely jealous of all the great wood you guys have access to down there.
What is inset into the tip in this picture?

That is buffalo horn glued in with EA-40.

I spent the morning (12am-2am and then 8am-11am) doing final shaping on the handles of the two sister bamboo backed maples I’ve been working on. Then I stained the wider one and am putting the tip overlays on the narrow one while waiting on the wide one to dry. Just enjoying coffee and tunes in the shop. It’s like heaven 😃

Very cool Chris. I like what you did at the end of those skins. Very classy.
Couple pics of some projects. Working on tuning up an old Stanley No.6 Plane. One picture of a handle design I want to try out and some limb dimensions for a bow in progress.
Here's a video of myself doing some thinning down on a piece of white oak. Going to share this in some facebook groups for beginners. I know a lot of us learn by watching others and it's hard to do that when the gatherings can't happen! :'( I've used white oak before but for an axe handle. I had several staves that I bent too early when they were still green. The grain is so tight compared to other woods I've used. Excited to see how it turns out but it needs to dry a bit more. Still at 11%. Humidity has been high lately.

Sweet bow Pearly. The skins look great.
Russell, take it easy with your back. Once you mess it up it's never the same. I deal with back pain almost every day. It started with an accident when I was your age.
-
Spent the morning doing chores. Finally made a steel towel holder for my ash slab Island and made a few months back. Teaching the daughter how to crumble Ricotta and properly assemble lasagna. That's my oldest Nina who a few of you know from the shoots. She's measured 4'11" this morning. Almost as tall as BJ! Off to the shop I go
-
Wow, she is almost s tall as BJ :)
Hi Nina'!
-
Mmmmmmm, lasagna.
-
I got some EA40 slapped on the splices and clamped it down. Love the two tone billets. The tape just helps the mess stay at a minimum.
-
This nasty thing is a blank I started for a swap, but really dont trust it 150% in either longevity or performance. So I built another one for him and just started back on this one. Its 63" tip to tip and stiff as a broom stick. Right side is floor tillered to 65-70#. Left side is off the saw.
-
Where is Patrick? I dun not having a good time without him
-
I found him! He was hiding with JonW.

Nive looking stuff there Pearlie!
-
I'll be the first to admit that I can't do what I did at 25.
I'm finally moving, will get pics of the stave twist in a bit. Slow start this morning.
-
That's a nice looking bow Chris. I like the spliced billets you have also. There is quite a color difference. It will be interesting to watch them as they age to see if they end up the same color.
-
Man that smells good Clint.
I still got her beat by about 4” or 5”
Bjrogg
I’ve been in my tractor and fixing stuff all day so far.
-
Got that big knotty one to 26 in. Right around 50 lb I'd say
-
Whew 2 hrs to rough this side out
-
I'm lagging wayyyyyy beind
-
Welcome lleroy...
-
Looking good Paul
BJ, that's a pretty sophisticated looking tractor my friend.
-
First shavings I've made in well over a year. I love pulling wide curls off a belly.
-
So if my roughed out bow is 1/2" outside the fades what should the tips width be?
-
Whew 2 hrs to rough this side out
Not bad time. It looks like your coming along good. It's a lot of work roughing them out. :BB
-
I had to take a little time away to patch some drywall for the wifey. I slipped back outside while she took a nap and roughed out this little HHB stave. Hopefully I can get back to it tonight. I think there is more drywall work in my future.
-
Greetings from Belgium!
Hi lleroy, please share more about what you have going. A back view or close-up pic?
-
Hi folks.
Started working on roughing out a hazel blank this afternoon.
I'm still a beginner, this should be my 5th working bow if all goes well.
I don't have much room for working inside, so I had to wait for nicer weather,
and the Virtual Bowmaking Festival was a good opportunity to get the gear out.
Just got close to floor tillering before dark!
(I hope the picture attachment makes it... this is my first picture post, after lurking around here for a few years)
Greetings from Belgium!
-- lode
Nice to meet you! I'm glad this event got you woring on something. That stave looks great. I'm about to get back into my shop tonight.
Paul, nice looking bend on that one there.
-
The pie is out of the oven and cooling on the counter.
-
So if my roughed out bow is 1/2" outside the fades what should the tips width be?
Russell, Do you mean that the thickness from back to belly at the fades is 1/2" thick?
Working on a new heat treating caul because all my old ones warped. Gave me the chance to use my No. 5 jack plane which I just sharpened. Worked like a dream! You'd swear that pine was glass how smooth it was. Made a little jig for my heat gun too. Been jerry rigging my heat gun to a clamp for too long! (lol) I can't remember who I copied this design from but it was someone at Marshall.
-
1hr 30 min getting better!
anyone have an answer to how thick my tips should be? It's 1/2" out of the fades and the bow is 64" with a 4" handle and 4" fades.
Edit: just saw your post Ryan. Yes. Sorry but in the pic the belly is still a bit crowned, working on removing that
-
Here’s another one for you Ryan. My cousin calls the sprayer a transformer. It folds out to 120’ wide. It’s really amazing how far equipment has come since I started farming. This stuff is 16 years old. The really new stuff is even more crazy. I didn’t ever use horses, but my dad did. Mr. Deere must just be amazed watching from wherever he is.
I had a lot better day today. Got a lot of stuff fixed and a bunch of work done. It’s always a struggle getting everything working.
Bjrogg
Russell every piece of wood is different. Nothing wrong with starting out 1/2” thick. They probably will need more take off, but it’s really not something you can just measure. You need to take off enough that they bend.
-
Pictures are arguing with me, working on making hosting take them.
Guys sure are doing good work.
-
I'm gonna now straighten one of the tips with heat. It will be my first time :). Don't know too much about doing it but the general outline of what you do. Any tips would be appreciated!
-
Should we call the fire dept?
-
This is where the twisting is happening
-
Next
-
Well I think this one is pretty close to ready for finish work. Not sure what I’m going to do yet. It’s supposed to be simple. I think it’s about 28 1/2” here. The arrow is 32”. Top limb might be a little stiff yet.
Was nice meeting you guys I haven’t seen yet. Maybe some more from across the pond want to join the party.

Another question, why do you put oil on the bow when your heating it?
-
Another question, why do you put oil on the bow when your heating it?
Same reason as when you’re cooking, helps avoid burning it ;D
You can do it without oil but it might make your life easier especially if you haven’t done it before.

Thanks!

Got some more done on my red oak pyramid bow. Did the backing yesterday, left it overnight to dry and cleaned it up today then got it on the tree and started working on the bend.

This looks like a lively party fellas, I'm especially interested in BJ's tractor repairs. ;) An awful lot of fine bows under way by you guys, I think I'll pour a glass of Knob Creek and join in. I've been building a few the past couple weeks and finished one yesterday and one today with a third on the way. I'm gonna step away and pour that bourbon and I'll be back to see if I'm able to post pics. It's sure nice to be among so many good friends again. (-S
-
Wait. What.... is that badly bent? My stars its been a coons age. Glad to see ya back my friend. ;D
-
Ok, first test run on the pics. These are three kids bows on the left for my granddaughters, an osage stave from the infamous Osage Outlaw, one of the osage bows that I finished yesterday, an osage scalloped bow and a black locust bow that I finished last month and lastly another black locust double scalloped bow that I made in 2011 and refilled recently.
-
Good to see ya Dave. :) I sure hope Marshall gathering happens this year, I'll miss not sharing a campfire with ya if its canceled.
-
mmattockx~ looking good...you don't have any problems with the porous red oak sucking moisture from glue and then needing a few days to dry? Just curious... no wonder everything takes me so long. ???
Tillering with one eye requires time and now some good eyes for help... :OK I know what I see, or think I see... suggestions before going the last few inches tomorrow? Got it to about 22-23" still working a bit on the top limb but it seems to spring right back so far. The 2nd picture is immediately after a very long and slow tillering session. Thanks.
-
Lots of good stuff going on boys. Looking good all around. I started fletching some shafts for the new bow I posted a few pages back. Needed some lighter spined stock. I think tomorrow morning I will get back on a bow.
Good to see you tonite Gregor. I think I'll pour me a glass of dessert bourbon, you know the stuff.
-
Bob, Id say a few inches off each fade could bend a bit more. That will get you a good 1.5"more draw. Maybe 2".
-
Hey Chris, you gonna drink that candy bourbon are you? BTW, I really like the copperhead skinned bow you finished, nice artistic touch on those limb ends.
Thats gonna be a good looking bow Mr Barnes, wonderful snake character in those limbs.
-
Badly bent, if I can get my white oak untwisted I want to do a scalloped bow. How did you cut those?
-
Good to see you on here Greg. :)
-
Well holy smokes....Lots of bows from everywhere it seems.Recent and ones from the past getting finished up.All pretty impressive.Good thing about pulling shavings I never run out of fire starter for the stove.....Ha Ha.I finished my cat quiver made with a real cat.Need a carrying strap yet.

Great to see you Greg. I sure hope we can do Marshall.
Yesterday was frustrating. I had been working on my planter for three days. Once I thought I had it fixed for sure. Then next morning it wasn’t working again. Hate those intermittent problems. Then had expert out for half a day. That’s going to be a nice bill. He thought he had it, but next morning it wasn’t working again. Yesterday another expert. I was suspecting a part. It was what I suspected. Of course that was the part I was hoping it wasn’t. $2800 + 2 service calls. Then I decided to put on some fertilizer on my wheat. I put on liquid 28% with my sprayer. I had already tested it with water a couple weeks ago and everything worked perfect. Of course I didn’t make it all the way around the field and seal went out on hydraulic motor. I fortunately had a spare. There goes another $2100.
Today everything is working.
Bjrogg
That’s a sweet cat quiver Ed
Anybody seen Dbar?
-
Oh Bob I see the same thing Pearl does.
Bjrogg
Ps love that front profile.
-
Hi Ryan, how you doing my friend? I like the looks of the bow you have going here.
Edward, I use a 1" wide 1/2 round rasp/file, to cut the scallops.
Good looking cat quiver BowEd.
Here's a couple pics of the semi bendy handle osage I finished tillering and shot in today, 37# @ 24". Made this one for my youngest daughter, last bow I made for her was when she was around 13 yrs old I think, she's 26 now. Didn't take any work in progress, or braced, or full draw pics. It got a coat of varnish at the end of the day today, if its dry enough to string up tomorrow I'll bring it home and have the wife take a pic at full draw. I have some smoked tanned deer hide from Paulsemp for the handle wrap when its done.
-
thanks guys...that's the problem I always have... I will try to fix it some tomorrow.
Ed, that is a great looking quiver... and a BobCat ta' boot. :OK
-
mmattockx~ looking good...you don't have any problems with the porous red oak sucking moisture from glue and then needing a few days to dry? Just curious... no wonder everything takes me so long. ???
This is my first red oak bow, so I can't say (only my second bow ever, so I am about as green as can be at this). I used titebond III and put a light sizing coat on the wood before the backing went on and it certainly didn't feel wet this morning at all. I live in central Alberta and we are near desert levels of humidity so everything dries too fast in general.

-
Hey badly bent!! its good to see you!!!
-
Nice looking bow Greg. I don't know how you come up with some of your tip ideas ,but I really like them. It's one of the first things I look at on your bows.
-
Well here's the HHB I started today. It's been awhile since I have worked this wood, but I kinda like it. It's a little softer than Osage which is a nice break. I may have to go cut some next weekend. Tomorrow I hope to get back to the Osage bow and shape the grip and overlays and do the final sanding.
-
took a pandemic to get badly bent back on! Just got done with movie night with the girls. Im about to tuck them in and give my self another night in the shop
-
2 hrs later I get done with a movie night too Paul. Now to straighten a limb an start tillering
-
Dang, you guys aren't messing around. I was heading towards my bed. :)
-
I'll give myself another 3, 4 hrs maybe :)
-
Thanks for the greeting BJ & Deerhunter21
What you gonna attack in the shop tonight Paul? Post some pics buddy, I'll be awake for at least another hour. ;)
HHB is nice bow wood as you know Ryan, looking forward to seeing what you make from it. I got another bow tip picture for you. :) This is a osage stiff handle bow I finished yesterday for son-in-law #2. 63.5" ntn and around 46# or so at 27".
Got first coat of varnish on it today. Didn't get many pics but again if the varnish is dry enough tomorrow to string I'll try to get a full draw pic.
-
How long am I supposed to get Osage so the correction I'm making will stay?
-
I got distracted today by some other important chores. Just got cleaned up amd I'm heading to bed worn out.
Good to see you again Greg! I was wondering of you were going to show up!
-
Great to see you on again Greg. As usual, you've made some beautiful bows, I love the artwork on them.
That's gonna be a great looking bow Bob, I like all the wiggle in it.
Glad to hear your back to making shavings again Clint.
Cool looking quiver Ed, I foresee some beadwork on the shoulder strap
-
Aaron~"Cool looking quiver Ed, I foresee some beadwork on the shoulder strap"... I can save you the trouble of doing a lot of extra work Ed... I don't need anything that fancy on that BobCat quiver... (lol)
Lots of cool ideas on this thread guys... keep the pictures coming please... :OK
-
How long am I supposed to get Osage so the correction I'm making will stay?
If you are just correcting one limb I would let it sit overnight. If you are doing both, I would let the first cool and stabilize for 1/2 - 1 hr before removing any clamps and starting the next. I would definitely not start bending it again until tomorrow. I assume you are using dry heat and not steam? If you are using steam disregard everything i said.
-
Another nice stick Greg. From all the photos it appears you have been busy. I hope to see some of these bows this spring.
-
First off deerhunter, if it were me I would wait on tht correction. Get those limbs worked down a bit more before puttin the heat to it, less mass equals better corrections. Veg oil the belly and heat until you cant hold your finger on it... second it's so cool to all the amazing work goin on here. Thanx Dave for puttin this together... deerhunter let it sit until it feels cool again
-
I'm waiting for pics from night owls Paulsemp & Stixnstones, hurry up fellas it's almost my bedtime. :D
One more set of pics of the scalloped osage I finished last month. I think it is around 61" ntn and 46# at my 24" draw.
Tomorrow I start on the osage in the last pic that I chased a ring on at the end of the day today.
-
tomorrows project
-
Looks great Greg... unfortunately I'm a couple bourbons inand didnt do $&#! after work, sorry Dave
-
Okay pops I was working on get myself in the mood. Refinishing and redoing the handle on this static I made about 5 years ago. Backed with snake shed
-
Got one limb moving enough to floor tiller, tomorrow I'll work on the other then it's the long string.
-
It's awesome to see all of this bow making going on. Thanks for starting this Red Beard Dave.
I got the bow I'm working on to floor tiller and smoothed all the edges.

When the wife went to bed I headed back out to the garage for some midnight heat treating. I love the way hot osage smells.
I didn't go too dark with it. I think this is the first time I have tempered a bow and didn't see any small cracks open up. The stave is nearly 30 years old. I had the blank in the house for the last 2 years. It was seasoned and dry.

Greetings from across the other, bigger, pond. We are missing out on the best hunting of the year down these ways, our red deer are just starting to kick off for the roar (you guys call it the "rut" I think), ahh well, the freezer is full of venison regardless, just a shame about not getting the annual footage of stags roaring their heads off.
Awesome to see everyone coming out of the woodwork, I don't normally participate very much in the social side of this awesome forum due to time constraints but this one is too good not to be a part of.
Bow-Ed that cat quiver is great!
I have recently harvested a beaut of a kanuka tree, got 9 beautiful staves off one tree which is a record for me, also got a sapling that gave me two gooduns. These trees sure are slow growing, the "sapling" was maybe 4-5 inches at the base and 26yrs old, same age as me! the bigun went somewhere in the 55-60 age range, it can be hard to tell with thin ringed diffuse porous woods. even though they are slow growing they grow everywhere! so not too much guilt about giving the odd one the chop.

this next one is a very reflexed elderberry stave I posted earlier, before and after pics of deflexing the handle. I made a bunch of perpendicular kerf cuts in a 3.5" area of the handle then steamed for 30 mins, bent like a noodle! might be my first reflex delfex once I even up the limbs.

And last of all just for sh#ts and giggles I'm trying out my first Z splice on a set of billets I've had lying around for a while this is them after boiling and clamping. and then after a bit of a tidy up.

-
well, I'm a bit to late ....
missed to take some pics
I'm working on an outdoor workbench and on an elderberry bow
But I think that corona thing is going on a few months and so I'm hoping for another oppotunity.
You guys do incredible fine work!
Welcome back Greg and Clint, nice to see bows from you again!
-
It's great to see everyone's projects coming together. There sure is a lot of talent here. BJ, hope you can get your equipment situation figured out. I'm sure it's frustrating. Clint, I'm glad you got some time to work on a bow again. Everyone's work is very inspiring for me.
I got the nocks tapered & nocks glued on my boo shafts then I realized I don't have any suitable fletching glue so maybe I can run out and get some today. These boo arrows will hopefully be for my trip to Quebec in June (if it happens at all). My girlfriends bow is ready for tillering. It has a twisty deflex coming out of the top fade so that may make tillering a little challenging. I'm shooting for about 28#@25". Time to go make some coffee and start the day. Looking forward to another fun day of virtual bow building.
-
As I had hoped to see, more fine work show up throughout the night.
Rakau, that looks like a nice bunch of staves you collected.
Pa Steve that's a nice profile on that bow.
Greg, I love the color combinations on that last bow.
Dave, this was a great idea to start this Virtual Bowmaking Festival thread. I personally have enjoyed it. I hope to have a few more photos later.
-
Good to hear your still kicking Clint.Should make a very nice bow from that piece of wood.
A 24 hour hour a day around the world build-a-thon with you fellas on the other side of the world building.Very nice work also.
-
Great to see all you join the party. This thing has become a real international meet. I know I haven’t been giving personal replies to everyone but I love seeing all of you here.
Thanks Steve for the wishes of getting all my stuff going. I got one more piece of equipment that bucking. Hopefully get that figured out tomorrow. I got fertilizer on about half of my wheat yesterday. I’m debating if I should finish it today or get some therapy in the bow shop.
Those bows are all sweet Badly Bent. I’ve been missing seeing your work. Thanks for coming.
Clint that’s one very clean. Very straight piece of Osage. You still got that two hole stave you were working on?
Bjrogg
I like the 24 hour part to Ed. Good morning. How do you like your coffe?
-
I'm thinking DVS will be pretty excited once he wakes up and sees what's been happening while he was resting. It's too cool to have people from around the world taking part in this...and very much like MoJam had been in the past. There were several years we had people from England, Germany, Scotland, and other parts of the world share our camp there. Keep it up... thanks.
BJ~ sorry you are having to work so hard while most of us are playing.
Rākau~ welcome aboard...I will have to look up that kanuka tree.
-
BJ....I like my coffee with a dash of milk BJ,and I make goooood coffee. Not like that stuff in these one stop places that tastes like mud.
Bob....I always got a kick out of Mo Jams' diversity from all over the country and the world.
-
Good morning fellas! I'm up amd at em, but I'm wont be making any bows this morning. I have to strip and replace some roof at my parents house for awhile. It's in the worst shape I've ever seen.
I'd like to take credit for this get together, but really, that's what this site has been for the while time. People from around the world sharing pictures and knowledge. Sometimes we just need a new reason to enjoy something old. I am pretty happy to see the turn out though!
-
These builds being shown will continue to be shown long after this weekend finishing up on them.

Good morning Dave. Will do what I can to help fix your parents roof. Afraid from here about all I can do is hold my tongue right.
It’s not a problem Bob. I’d rather be getting stuff done then sitting looking at mud like last year. I’m ahead of game so far. And I’m still getting some party time.
That was a good cup of coffee Ed

Morning Guys, I see folks all over have been busy.
Still wakin' up here but I do recall that Barnes makes good coffee too. :OK
Be careful on that roof Dave.
-
If he gets up before me then I don't need to make any....I'll remember that.....Ha Ha.
-
Morning everybody! Thanks for sharing all your projects on here. It is really fun seeing what you're all up to. I'd like a cup of that coffee too, if you're offering. Sure with I could share the real thing with a bunch of you. Hopefully some day. Have a great Sunday!

After putting the first couple coats of tru oil on the two bamboo/maple bows, I started a new bow and accomplished my favorite part of the bow-making process.....making new strings 😃

Forgot to mention, the new bow I started on is a 62” piece of 1/2” hickory and I glued up a Che Chen riser last night and am planning on making a bamboo backed static recurve.
-
I cleaned up the tape and glue on my splice job. Looks good. Its so nice seeing tight glue lines. No matter what you're gluing up. I got several arrows fletched as well. Good weekend in the shop for me. I really enjoyed seeing everyone's work from around the globe. Pandemic schmandemic we had our fun all the same, not sure when the entire (mostly) world has been in the same boat like we are right now.
-
Always a good feeling finishing up on things.
Here's my finish up job.I call it done.

Nice job guys on everything you did. Haven't seen this much enthusiasm on this site in years

That's a good looking quiver Ed
-
That turned out great Ed. I cant wait to see it on the Mojam Auction table. hah
The important thing to remember about how your splices turned out Chris is that you did you best I got this I'm home for the day so I am going to get a little more work done in the shop. I got this sassafrass stave bending to 45@22 but am still dealing with a stiff spot. Hopefully it will work it self out in the last few inches.

You got the roof fixed and looks like you’ll have that stiff spot fixed soon to Dave. :BB
I was going ack to my pond and then to the shop but my Deep Roots cousin called. Hour and a half later and I’m just heading to the shop. Has a good visit

I still have a little grip work and some final sanding. I have put a few arrows through it and it is holding 2-1/2" of reflex. I imagine I will lose some of that.
-
A couple more.

Nice, Ed. Now that's what I call a Cat Quiver! :)

That looks great Ryan! Nice work. That bocote is going to look great under a leather grip.
Some pictures from the roof.

Beautiful quiver Ed. Bow looks fantastic Ryan and damn Dave, you sure made quick work of that roof
-
Looking good Ryan.
Dave don’t forget I helped with the roof. Glad your done. My tongue is sore from holding it just right. My roof is going to need replacing pretty soon to.
I think I’m going to try to put just a little reflex in the bottom tip. I usually don’t do it like this. Hope I don’t regret this.
Bjrogg
-
I think I’m happy with that.

I hate roof work. Y’all are making me jealous of the work getting done. My soon to be ex wife works at a grocery store and a worker there was tested positive for Corona. So the kids are spending the next two weeks straight with me. I’m still working as an essential electrician. I did get to take the kids fishing today. Nailed my first bass of 2020 and SHE WAS A HOG! No scale, dumb me left it at home, but I would say a conservative 5-6lb.
I can’t wait to get back into the shop. I got a layout planned for my trade bow I’m itching to get roughed out.
-
Thanks for your help bj. Thise pics were from smaller sections. I've got it almost completely repaired. Everytine its strip off the old, tear out the rotten plywood, fix any rotten truss members, replace the insulation that is wet, then re shingle so I have to tackle it in small sections.
-
Should I be worried about this crack? I’m worried it might be delamination or something
-
Dave, fast work on that roof! I spent one summer in college roofing. Liked the money (for a 20 year old who had only mowed lawns and washed dishes up to that point, it was good pay) and the muscles, but it was too much like work.
Got a few arrows out of the Badgerling's new bow just now. Meant to take some pics but we were both so excited I totally forgot. She can't get it to full draw--I think I misjudged her draw length, so back to the rasp and scraper. But it does indeed sling an arrow, so that's exciting.
-
Remember now Dave....It's nice to feel needed.
My Robin keeps me aware of that many many times.
Deerhunter21...Can you get your fingernail in it or is it just a dark line? The usual flood it with thin super glue and hope for the best.
-
damn that's a nice splice pearlie, those contrasting staves are neat, having not dealt with osage am I correct in assuming the will eventually darken up and look the same?
-
WB There is always something special about those first few arrows from a new bow. That is made even better when they are from a young child. I have a bow I'm skinning in a bit for my nephew. Now you will find the hard part is keeping the kid in arrows!
Ed, I hope Robin had a great birthday and I hope to see you both someday soon!
Russel, Soak it with cheap superglue and hope for the best. Most of the time those small cracks don't go deep and when filled with CA glue, never cause an issue.
-
Nice batch of staves Rakau, very clean and straight looking. Sweet profile on your girlfriend's bow PA Steve. BJ, I'm glad you got a bit of time away from the aggravating equipment repairs and into the bow shop my friend. Same for you Dave, roofing is no fun compared to bow time. Ryan that bow looks awesome buddy. Nice splice work Pearly, I know you only expect the most precise work outta yourself and most always get it. Great work by all others here this weekend as well.
I spent a few hours over at the shop today. Got my side profile reduced leaving mid limbs to tips wide for corrections to mild twist on one limb and reflexing on the caul later. Found a crack on belly but shouldn't be a problem. Realized that I wouldn't have enough depth in the handle area for a stiff handle so took the handle down to 1" thickness. Decided to go for a bit of a d/r bow so put it on the caul and did a long slow heating at handle to fades and attempted to add a bit of deflex there. Took it off the caul a couple hours later, not much deflex gained at handles/fades. Tomorrow I'll thin the limbs a bit more and add reflex to them and reduce the handle thickness a bit more and add more reflex there. That was all for today, enjoy the rest of you're Sunday all.
-
Greg, I"m happy that you got some shop time in. I'm missing you and Sharon. Knowoing I wont see you guys for awhile makes it somehow tuffer. I cant even give you crap about the cubs for awhile, except that, at least they are still tied for first place!
Also, while everyone is online, vote for BOM!

Ya caught that subtle joke, eh Pauly. ;D

Hmm, I don't have a lot of superglue
I got the limbs bending well, here's a pic. Gonna go in a hunt for superglue.

They'll all be in first place if there are no games this year. Sharon says Hi, we're hoping to still be able to catch up with you and your young ones this year at some point. :)

Well time to pack up for the long ride home. Was sure great seeing you guys again. Let’s do this again.

its already over???!!!! aww man.
-
Should I be worried about this crack? I’m worried it might be delamination or something
As a rookie bowyer, but an experienced engineer and wood worker I would wick thin CA glue into that, followed by medium and some sawdust if there is a gap to fill. Delamination is between layers parallel to the back and belly, this looks like a crack that is vertical between the back and belly unless I misinterpreted the picture?
Mark
-
thats the side of the bow, it just follows a early wood ring.
-
i really dont know how to explain it. its a crack in-between two rings on the side of the bow.
-
Osage? A lot of people don't seem to like those types of cracks in that wood. They seem to act like a lamination glue separation.
-

how bad on a scale of "Keep an eye on it" to "your bows toast"
-
sorry i ment earlywood. too.
-
>:D haha that donut cracks me up. looks like a nice bit of wood there badly bent, is 1" not enough depth for a stiff handle with osage?
-
delamination is a death sentence for me. Ive put glue in them and held before but never shot enough to prove. They usually extend into to wood far.

ugh, ok. tomorrow ill scrape it till the delams gone. if its deep, leave it or scrape it, either way is a death sentence. if its not deep ill just reduce the limbs to the width it stops at.

In that case it is much worse. I would still try to wick thin CA into it, but a delamination like that is likely never going to stop opening up as the bow is worked unless you can remove enough material to get rid of it before moving on.

I took my bow off the form today and was happy with how it looked and lined up. I started to cut some horn for tip overlays but got side tracked with setting coyote and coon traps.
-
Great to read about everyone working on their bows.
I sure hope Marshall works out this year.
Thank you to all who posted pics and told their stories of working on bows this weekend. It is inspiring.
-
I enjoyed the entire weekend. It inspired me to get a lot done in the shop and it felt like I hung out with some of my best buddies in the world. Thanks for hosting big Dave.
-
It was good to get together with old as well as new friends. It helped ease the pain of missing a weekend TAS shoot that I had been looking forward to for several months. Thanks to all.
-
Made it home safe. These meets always end to soon. This one especially so. It’s always good to be home, but it seems like I never left..lol
Thanks for invite Dave. Had a great turnout

Glad you made it back, BJ. :D I'm back in Wyoming, too. The drive was a lot shorter than I remember it. Today, back to the grind, if you can call practicing my instruments, writing songs, exercising with my family, and doing on-line singalongs a grind.
Thanks for a fun weekend, everybody.

Great weekend and usual in these gatherings i didnt get much done. Started out strong but then just kicked back and enjoyed the show.
-
wow, i woke up in my bed this morning! was it all just a dream????
thanks you guys, I had a great weekend that i really needed to have. My dads not to happy about the shavings though.
If this bow turns out good, ill give it to my dad as a present. if it turns out great... well, ill put it in the bow trade. I don't know if my dad would really enjoy a bow though. i don't think he would shoot it without me pushing him too. but we'll see!
-
What a great weekend. Best I've had in months. I really enjoyed seeing everyone's bows and projects they're working on. Thanks to Dave and to all participants. It really felt like I was at a gathering with some top notch bowyers. I'm staying optimistic that things will subside somewhat and Marshall will go on as planned. That would be great as I know many are looking forward to it. Great job everyone!!
As far as my arrows for Quebec...six are fletched and the rest should be done this week. The bow for Annie (my girlfriend) was roughed to brace but has a group of pin knots that are suspect...so....taking Pearl's advice I'm going to back it with some thin goat rawhide before proceeding with the tiller. Hopefully she'll be shooting it at Marshall. Hope everyone stays safe and healthy.
-
Like so many of these events that I have been to I didn't get much done but had fun watching the more talented and skilled attendees make great stuff.
Well, I did bring a pie tho... ;)
-
Who said it only had to be a weekend gathering? I say we hang out until all of this quarantine stuff is over.
-
That might be long enough for me to actually finish something, that's if I get started.
-
Hate to be the rain on this parade, but I say we keep this going. The chances of Marshall, MI being a "go" are about at zero. Our governor this morning mentioned possibly extending our stay at home order, which already runs through April. Marshall would be just 3 weeks later, just don't see that happening boys.
-
Of all the (insert inappropriate words here) things to happen.
I will miss Marshall for sure this year, if it doesn't happen.
Better start working on something then.
-
I really don't thing anything is going to happen this year. Even if someone were to declare the "all clear" I think folks will stay hunkered down for a while.
-
I need a little info. This is really my first shortish (60") straight bow. It's a bendy Yew tillered to 40#@28". Should I be expecting some set. I got about 1 1/2-2" and I don't like the look. Just curious if I screwed the tiller or if it was expected.
-
Well, if this festival gets extended, I may actually get around to posting something! I did do a good bit of work on a hackberry stave and messed with some arrows over the weekend, which is more consistent work that I have gotten in a while. Watching this thread was fun and inspiring.
-
I'm in...the Arkansas governor...one of the hold-outs as far as a stay home order... just announced that school campuses are closed the rest of this school year...online only. I continued my osage work... sort of... I dropped a huge stave on my big toe and busted the heck out of the nail... and there's no way I'm heading to a doctor with it. It'll heal.
-
Thanks to everyone for showing up! This really was a fun get together and it seemed like we were all together, at least in spirit. Kinda lifts the mood knowing we are all going through this together. I hope we all stay in touch a bit more and start sharing our work more. It does help pass the time.
Hope you foot heels up bob! Bowmaking has been hard on your body!
-
I'll keep posting stuff here. I'm not really into creating threads or commenting on everything everyone's doing. Just because I don't comment doesn't mean I don't like looking and knowing what people are up to. If people keep posting to this thread it'll be a fun one to look back and see what all of us did while the world was shut down
-

Ditto that

well the fun continues!!!

I put some cool looking sheep horn overlays on my bow tonight. Maybe tomorrow I'll get them rough shaped enough to hold a string. I need to do some major cleaning before I can use my tillering tree. Since I haven't been working on bows my shop has become more of a storage room.
-
Thats my plan as well. Tomorrow is my friday, planning on workin on another hackberry that I've had roughed out for awhile. Progress pics to come
-
I finished putting fertilizer on wheat and now I’m planting sugar beets. Think I got all the bugs out and everything zeroed in. Maybe if everything goes really good I make the trip next weekend

The kid and I may go harvest some HHB this weekend. If so I will post some photos.
-
Can someone give me a second opinion on this. I see it bending a lot inner middle or a couple inches out of the fades.
-
Good luck, BJ. Russell, no help from me, sorry. Good use of a banister, though. ha ha How are you and the family getting along?
-

were doing good :) . i used to tie the tillering tree to the banister! screwing it is a lot more sturdy!
-
after intense staring and remembering to use a straight edge i now know what to do.
-
It doesn't look bad. Get a shorter string on it. Brace it up so the string is an inch or two above the grip. I can tell by your limb thickness you have a 60# bow right now.
-
ok that gives me 15-20# to go. thats gonna go by fast. gonna go slow now.
thanks pearl.
-
Well I got rained out so I thought I stop by for a couple hours. Got another HHB I gave a really good heat treatment and tried to wrestle a few curves I didn’t like out of her. She seems like a nice one. Good grain but kinda wiggly.
Tonight I got her little closer.
Bjrogg
PS Russell I’m seeing most of the bend inner to starting to bend mid.
Like Pearl said not bad. I’d probably get the outers moving just a little next. A short string will pull the outers in a bit more.
-
Thats got just a touch of wiggle to it, like your corn rows :)
-
The rows are longer that way.

Just got back from some fly fishing in a cheating lake. You always get at least 3 fish there so it's nice to go to when I'm not catching anything.
I have been working my muscles that I use to pull the bow back, and now it's way more comfortable to pull the bow back. I was really overbowed. Now, not as much.
Gonna go tie some flies now.
-
hmm, i seemed to have misplaced my kit...
-
put a birch handle wrapped with sinew on this static. snake shed back

Mighty pretty, Paul! Russell, you remind me: Mrs. Badger got me a fly tying kit for Christmas...Now where did I put it???
-
Good looking handle and bow Paul.
-
HERE I AM PAUL!
I got tied up at work installing a new walk in cooler. It was one of those, everything that could go wrong did jobs. It's still not quite right. I think I'll have to replace the new TEV.
So once I got home on Saturday my parts finally came in for my mower. Well most of them. So I set in to tearing it apart and repairing it. Still had more to fix but it would mow so I finally got my grass cut here around my house. It was only about 18 inches tall. Had a lot of limbs from recent storms to clean up also. I sill had about 3 more acres to mow. Late Saturday night the rest of my parts finally showed up (9pm) so I done my normal spring maintenance on my mower and when I started it the exhaust was suddenly really loud. The top of the muffler busted open. So I took it back apart and got my Welder out and carefully welded it back up. It almost completely ripped the top off of the muffler. Reinstalled and now it's working great! So since I was already nasty from that job I decided to go ahead and mow the other 3 acres. Lots of trees and leaves and pecan and hickory shells, dusty as hell!
Worked 11 hours on Monday and was off today, decided to try to get all my weedeating done, well not before I had to work on the weedeater for 3 hours. Finally works good now and I got it all weedeated. Now my back is killing me and I'm tired as hell. But I'm back on top of my yard, with the weather the way it has been I'm only about 2 weeks behind.
I finally read through the thread, man what a turn out! It felt like old times on PA! New blood and old friends all at the same place and time. I could see everyone's faces and hear their voice as I read through the post. I guess I could have done like ol BJ and took pictures of my mower!
I don't have any recent pics from bows but I'll try to put a couple up from a bow I made Andy from feathers&woods.
Hope to get in on the fun this weekend if everything works out this time.
GREAT TO SEE EVERYONE!
Patrick
-
OK guys, here is a few pictures of some older work.
Some of you may remember the plains Indian style quiver I made a couple of years ago. Well I said I probably would not make another one but...
Mrs. Laura, Eric's wife, twisted my arm and I made this on especially for her.
The other pics are of "Fat Boy" I normally don't name bows but this one had to have a name.
I made this for Andy, and I'll say he was a pain in the butt! I normally don't break many bows but if I recall I broke at least 4 bows in the process of turning out this bow for him. Dang lefties!
Sorry I don't have a braced picture.
Patrick
-
Some more...
-
My version of bladed fades, I really like how they came out and I think I will be incorporating them into future bows. I'm getting really bad about not taking pictures of much unless it's for someone at one of our gatherings.
Patrick
-
Good to hear from you Pat.Looks like your staying busy and healthy.Like the bow and hand stitched quiver.I think I remember that guy shooting that bow at Mo Jam.Liked your hand stitched holsters and knife sheaths too previously. From farther up north here it seems the spring is coming on sooner and sooner every year or at least the grass needs a mowing earlier anyway. The more toys one has for himself the more work it is a fixing them but it makes a fella a jack of all trades anyway.Good feeling in that.
Long ago when I put up my own hides to sale I had a chance to buy a walk in cooler from a farmer/retiring fur buyer and be an independent fur buyer myself since I knew all about grading fur of all the animals anyway. It could keep those overrun boughten beaver carcasses hard as a rock [-60 F.]Along with his whole ramada of frames and fleshing machines and knives too.$5000.00.It was a good deal.A lot of time consuming work though being an independent fur buyer and decided my fall row crop work and coon hunting hobby I loved was enough time consuming the way it was.Along with my buckskinning hobby and making things in the dead of the winter.A person gets too many hobbies you can't do justice to them all.
-
Ed, it sounds like you you have a lot of hobbies as well brother! You are right about the jack of all trades thing. I can't think of anything that was worth fixing that I haven't either fixed or tried to fix anyways.
That reminds me, I have some hides in my freezer that could use some attention.
Well not today, off to work.
Patrick
-
Looking good Pat-Rick. The quiver is bad azz.
-
Hey great to see you Patrick. You know I slept so good last night I didn’t even here you snoring buddy.
I’d like to see pictures of the walk in cooler job.
That’s a very nice looking bow and quiver.
I know this one has some wiggle but the string should go through center of handle.
Ground is Still a little tacky. Don’t know if it will dry enough to plant today or not. Got lots of other stuff to do anyway. I did check with a string line. Handle is in the vice. I think it’ll work.
-
i need to make it so the string goes through the handle. ill probably steam it. while im at it i might flip the tips a little.
-
Looking good Pat-Rick. The quiver is bad azz.
Thanks brother, I appreciate it!

BJ, I fooled you bub, I got me a c-pap back in November. No snoring for me, and I feel a lot better!
No pics of the walk-in, it's at a flower shop and the cooler part it homemade. Pretty much partitioned off a section of the building and put 3 layers of blue foam insulation on every wall and the ceiling. Not the best but it keeps her flowers at 37 degrees.
That bow is coming along nicely bj!
Patrick
-
Glad to hear that Patrick. The cooler sound pretty cool.
Thought I’d stop in tonight for awhile.
Got this one to brace and shaped the hand. Has some heartwood in it.
Ready to hit the bag now. Sleep tight Pat.

Found my kit. This fly didn't turn out so well. But I'm sure it'll catch fish. Accidentally tied the tail down to the hook.
I made a short string for the bow so gonna get on that soon.
-
deer hunter
sometimes using a clamp to hold the bow in the saddle of the tiller tree can throw you off if the limbs are unevenly strong.
-
Looking good BJ. You better hurry, the fields are going to start yanking on your leg pretty soon.
-
Nice one, BJ! Russell, when I used to tie (back when I was not much older than you), my favorite fly was an original "pattern" that I called "The Windshield Bug." It looked like, well, just that. Not something I ever could have sold in a fly shop. And I caught more fish on it than any other fly I ever tied, including the pretty ones. ha ha

I “improved” my jig today after a couple quasi-failures trying to make recurved tips. Still not sure why the last couple tries didn’t work, but it worked today and both tips turned out well. This is a 62” hickory bow that I plan on backing with bamboo this weekend.

Last year I was averaging 2 bows per month. Here is a pic. of some of them. I have no idea whether after I post the pic. it will show top to bottom, or left to right. The bow woods used to make these bows include, Osage, White Oak, Hornbeam,Hickory, American, Elm, and Birch. Couple of the bows are sinew backed. I enjoy this thread.
-
Left to right Hornbeam,White Oak,Osage ,Bamboo,Elm,Hickory, sinew backed Osage sapling, Birch I finished tillering today, but not finished, sinew backed Elm,and White Oak. All the bows are tillered to my satisfaction, and bare shaft tested except the Unfinished Birch bow. It is fun looking at all the different bows on this thread. Good idea, and nice to share ,and talk to other bow makers. Bob

I will try a bigger pic for a better look

I posted 3 pics in the process of trying to post a clearer bigger picture. sorry for that.

Yup Pearl you know it. I got 99 acres of beets planted. Got rained out again. Not a lot, but enough to get me out of the fields. I spent most of the day doing books and working on computer. I suck on computer so everything I do takes me a hundred time longer than someone who knows what their doing. One of the trades I’m not really a jack of. If I live long enough maybe I’ll figure it out.
Tonight I did a little more tillering and narrowed up the tips some more. I got her out to 45@27. The tiller isn’t perfect yet but pretty close. Would like to finish her up before I get to busy.

Another size
Those sure are some pretty sticks!
The one close to the middle with the speckled back, what did you back it with?
Patrick
-
Thank you Patrick ,I backed it with a black speckled cotton fabric.

Here's a bamboo backed yellow heart
The core was heat shaped in a shallow 5 curve before glueup,so the brace looks a little weird.

Little it of snow this morning. Still kinda hoping I can start planting sugar beets this afternoon. We always say beets have to get snowed on after you plant them and again before you harvest them to really get all they have to offer. My first 99 acres are half way there.
I got this one pretty close. Top limb could bend a little more in outer. This one is a little funky. A little natural reflex out of top fade and deflex out of bottom. I’m trying to tiller for three under and 29”. The arrow is 32”.
This one is for a fellow Michigander. Not far from me. Wish he could give it a try about now. Probably a violation of our further extended safe home stay safe lockdown though. Guessing it’s not considered essential. Probably going to have to wait until at least May. For now I guess my fellow Michigander will just have to look at pictures.
Fortunately this won’t effect everyone at our virtual bow meet.

BJ something looks a little off with that top limb. Looks like you might have flat spot around the middle of it

I agree Paul. I’ve been working on that spot. This is the first chance I got full draw picture in hand and also first three under. There is a lot of wiggle there but I agree. I don’t like the bend or lack there of in that top limb. It feels balanced in hand but it looks kinda ugly at full draw.

Looks gud to me BJ. Yer grabbing a handful of string! What is that overdrAw equate to in inches?

Thanks Shawn. I think Paul is right. The top limb has been making me trouble from the beginning. I’ve been chasing that spot the whole time. I think I got it a little better now but nobody to take a picture again. It’s always one of the nice things about these meets. Having some more eyes.
The arrow is 32”. I’m thinking that’s really close to 29.5”? The needle on my scales broke but I think I can still see where it’s supposed to be. Right now on the tree I’m liking it better and I’m right at 46@28.5 if I have my scales figured out right . Anyone here have a scales I can borrow?lol.
Never mind. Time to get back in the tractor.

Looking good Bj! One you fix that stiff spot on the upper mid limb it looks like it will be a sweet bow.
I got a extra scale in the side box in my truck. It's back at camp, bit of a walk but you can have it if you would want to grab it.

Thanks Patrick. I’m planting sugar beets again, but maybe I’ll swing around that way when I’m finished. Just love how everyone shares all their stuff at these meets.

No problem bud, the thing I really like is, if you forget to bring it someone else usually has on you can use. It might take them a little while to get it to you but you can count on someone having what you need.

Lookin good BJ,.... the bow that is. You on the other hand look a bit strained yanking the string back that far. ;D
You know I'm just kidding my friend, you are by far the most handsome farmer in all of northern Michigan.
Hope to meet up at Marshall or Elm Hall yet this year, always nice to spend time around you.
-
Thanks Greg. It certainly is a bit longer than my normal draw length. Probably close to 5” longer.
I probably am getting a little scruffy looking. They shut all our barbers down several weeks ago. I was due for a haircut before they shut them down. Starting to feel like the 70’s . So far my wife won’t cut it and won’t let me.lol. We’ll see what she says after another month.
I sure hope we can do Marshall or Elm Hall. It’s great to see you here , but it’d be better in person. Tell Sharon and Nate Happy Easter for me. Hopefully see you all soon.

Hello everyone!
I hope I'm not late to the party and that this is the right thread to post in.
Recently, I've got more interested in "historical" archery (through the debates on YT on which side of a longbow you're supposed to have the arrow) and I want to get more into it myself. I looked online, but all the historical style bows are pretty costly, esp. with shipping. And since I love the feeling of creating things myself, I've decided to try and build it myself.
Here is when I've run into a corner. On the internet, there's so much material and advice on how to build bows. But I haven't really been able to find anything much about the traditional European/English way of making at least somewhat historically accurate bows, especially something comprehensive to a novice bowyer like I am.
I'd like to ask if someone could point me where to start, any tips, tricks, guides do's and dont's welcome, or if there's any article or thread that I've missed and would be helpful.
Thank you for reading!
P.S: Since this is my first post here ever, I maybe should introduce myself a bit. For few more days, I'm 19yo guy living in the Czech Republic. It's close to a decade that I'm practicing historical/stage fencing and I have been making and fixing stuff with my dad or brothers for almost as long as I can remember. I love creating stuff, nothing can beat the feeling of using something I created myself. This should be about enough :)

Well welcome to the party Czusky. And welcome to Primitive Archery site. Don’t think your to late . This party is going to continue till we can have some real meets.
My understanding is that you would like to learn how to make a English War Bow? Del is on this site and he make some nice ones. I believe he has a site of his own but not sure. Was kinda hoping he would join our international virtual bow meet. There is actually a War Bow section in this forum. If you look on the home page I think it’s right below the Bow section. This is the most popular section on the site. However there are specialty sections for War Bows, Horn Bows, Flight Bows, Flintknapping, Aarows and other stuff.
I applaud your desire and think you have come to the right place. Making a functional bow though is slightly more complicated than just making something to exact dimensions. I’m sure you can handle it though. We need to prepare “back” of bow so it can handle tension strength. We need to remove wood from the belly side ( the side towards your belly) to spread the compression forces out evenly and have a proper bend. That’s the simple explanation.
If you want you could check out the war bow section. Sometimes it’s a little slow. But you’ll find some interesting stuff I’m sure.
Once again welcome to PA site

Welcome. In addition to the War Bow section that bjrogg pointed to there is also a section farther down the index called How To's and Build Along's. Look through there for some details on bow building in general and ELB's in particular.

I'm going to jump on the bandwagon of newbie bowyers chiming in here. Hello to you in the Czech Republic!! Is there anyone in the Midwest USA? Specifically SW Wisconsin? I happened to jump into making bows a couple weeks before the quarantine happened, but once this craziness is over I would love to find out what the community is like in my neck of the woods. I know people certainly like their venison here.
Right now I'm trying to make a pyramid and American flat bow out of a small black locust I took down on my property a couple months ago. Currently they're roughed out and sitting in a warm room in my house, trying to slowly speed up the drying process and practice other parts of the process. The last thing I did was add tip overlays to the pyramid bow from a small fallen oak limb that I had let dry and cut chunks out of. I think they're probably overbuilt, could that cause any issues? I kinda like the way they look and will probably sand then down a bit as I finish the bow. I'm hoping to post some tillering pictures of it to get some feedback when I get the chance. Thanks for reading!!

Likemp,
I am in east central WI. Welcome aboard.
Overbuilt tips will slow down your arrow speed and cause hand shock when shooting.
-
Ksnow,
Thank you!
I guess I'll find out then, when I start shooting it in.
-
Likemp,
I am in SE Minnesota.

Hi Mike,
Very nice to "meet" you, your stuff is quite impressive, I've seen your name a lot during my digging through different threads.
Funny that we're probably not that far apart, I'm less than an hour from the border.
-
Hope you guys can get together in person.
I’m hoping the party gets going good this weekend. I might have a little time. I finished planting sugar beets today. We always say. Sugar Beets need to be snowed on after you plant them and before you harvest them to get the most out of them.
Just finished and looks like their off to a good start.

Im hoping to get back in my shop in 7-10 days. But, real estate transactions have stolen my time away. Selling a few houses, buying a house, closing on a hunting cabin and so on. Incredibly frustrating with all the restrictions we are under.
-
I hear you Chris. Hope you don’t need to do any painting.
I’m so glad we have our beets planted. Most people don’t understand the logistics of planting and taking care of a crop. I’ve been working at getting everything I need and it’s a lot of stuff. I say I, but it’s really WE. And a lot of other people to. Hoping to get through this quickly, but I’m preparing for the long haul. Good Luck with you transactions. It’s pretty much over phone, or computer for everything.

You can keep that snow up north BJ. I'm hoping to get back to work on my bow this week. I started on a non-archery related osage project and it's taken up most of my time. I should be wrapping it up on my next day off work.
Pearly, I hope to see your new place in person sometime. Good luck with it.

Freaking hail damage! Hope everyone else in the storm is doing om. On the bright side, I'm going turkey hunting tomorrow. Not archery, just plain old shotgun.
-
First of all, thanks for very warm welcome :)
Yes, Bjrogg, you got it right. I just avoided this designation because it (as far as I know) implies high drawweights, starting at 85 lbs and that I don't feel is a very good starting point. I've figured already that there is quite a bit more that goes into the art of bowmaking than it seems on the first glance. Thanks for pointing me to the other sections, I've skimmed through them superficially even before posting but now I have hours (if not days :D ) worth of reading ahead. Some of the older threads seem (judging from the title) to be quite exactly what I want to know.
Thanks again,
Czusky

Minnesota's Turkey season opened today. We have 10 inches of snow on the ground and we just set a record low temperature of 8 degrees. I think I will skip turkey hunting for now.

WOW! that was awesome!!! heres the story!
so we went to the closest area possible and my hunting buddy and i set up at the corner of the property, the birds were still in the trees so we did light calling. the hens flew down and one called back and forth to us. it came straight at us, saw our decoys, and didn't even care. just walked off the property. so then we reposition. while hes setting up the decoys, i sit down and then. GLOBLOBLOBL! i look to my right and every single tom, and jake were walking in a single file line. at this point he's already down so he calls. i take my gun off safety. the biggest gobbler ive ever seen pauses and looks at our decoys... and keeps on walking. my partner calles a little bit more, clucking and making the decoys presence known. he pulls two hens away, at least i thought they were hens. then i see the littlest beards coming out of their chests. I have never shot a turkey so this hunt was just the "we need to get him one!" hunt. so he says, "Russell, you can shoot!" and i slowly bring my benelli shotgun up. adrenaline shot through me and i put the bead right on its neck, or so i thought. I rushed the shot, never a good thing, and i missed. it runs and i take a follow up shot, but as most of you know, with a turkey choke, turkey shot, and the turkey being at 10 yards, the pattern was the size of a softball and of course i miss again. i take a third shot, put it right on its head and... miss. welp on to the next place!! nothing else really happened.
-
Glad you had fun, Russell. Keep after 'em!
-
Sounds like you had a great morning Russell. Those spring gobblers sure can get your heart pumping. Best of luck on your next outing.
