I will continue the bendy handle row with an osage bow made from exceptional wood. This bow is fumed for a few days, the black surface on the back is slightly sanded at handle and tips to get a contrast to overlay and handle wrap. The colors on the back are black and mahogany, on the belly a warm golden brown. The handle is a hemp wrap glued on with wood glue and rubbed in charcoal, also particularly sanded. Tip overlay are buffalo, wide and flat to match the wide paddle design.
The wood is extreme dense and tough, the early rings are anything else than spongy, rings are less than paper thin. This piece has a fantastic elasticity and springiness. The reflex is steamed in, less than 1 set during tillering, now 4 reflex. Probably a candidate for flight shooting, but was thought as hunting bow (not for me, fd pic is far away from full draw).

Brian, I'm recovering slowly. The fd pic is maybe at 65 pounds - no more. Hope I can gain back a bit more strength ...
But anyways, the job on a workbench don't effort much muscles :D

Ed, I feel that leaf spring reminder often with sinewed bows. But you are right this specimen is some rare wood behavind similar. Also when shooting the bow, the tension at brace is enorm
Beautiful bow, you sure wouldn't think it was 76# by looking at it :D
DC, yes - especially when you're looking from the side where only thin limbs are visible. But looking at the front just think of a combi fo two 40 pounders mounted together side by side. so you get a 2" wide paddle 8)
Now that's what I'm talking about. Marvelous, simply marvelous.
Thanks Gordon, means a lot for me. You was one of my heroes which brought me to bowmaking
Nice job, I did a projected mass weight on it and it came out at 494 grams, you were very close to that.
Steve, thanks for your input. I hoped for your chiming in. In fact the weight is total, inclusive string (ca. 10 g) and handle wrapping (maybe 30 g)
Thank you all!
Stay safe!

Very attractive bow. You must have used a large stave, the back is really flat. Fine paddle bow!

A guy is interested in this bow and wants to hunt whitetails with it. I said the drawweight is more for elk or moose or bear ... ;)

that relative thin but wide cross section allows a good draw length with a really short bow. Perfect to shoot out of a blind.
Inspiring work. (-S
Carson - what a surprise! I miss you and your work. Hope everthing is fine.
@ all: Thanks Gentlemen, makes me glad when you like that black paddle
