Back in the day, during the black plague, plague doctors wore these masks as part of their PPE along with a floor length coat, wide brim hat and a cane(for examining patients ??? ). The long beak on the mask was filled with lavender or other fragrant herbs to eliminate the stench of the plague and of death. They thought the plague was spread by the smell. (Google "Black Plague Doctors)
Anyway, Dylan asked me if I could make a plague doctor's mask. He got a pattern and sent it to me. These masks also had glass eye lenses. Dylan has located some old cutting torch goggle lenses he is sending me and I will add them when they got here. Anyway, here is the results...

That's it Eddie.

Oh man, Pat, I think you just nailed this year's #1 Halloween costume. Super cool.
-
Thanks Steve. I learned a couple of new leather working techniques with this project.
-
Pretty cool Pat....Bet you'd get some hard looks going down the grocery isle shopping in that....Ha Ha.I'm sure they'd think...this guy is hard core ppe guy.

Are you going to wear that at the next Classic? I bet you could fill the snout with chips and whenever you wanted a snack just tilt your head back.

That's some innovative out of the beaks thinking!

The mask is going to Dylan when it's done. Maybe he'll wear the whole outfit to the Classic next year.
Chips are a good idea, Clint. :OK
-
My governor just mandated masks in public. I've been thinking about making one of these plague masks. Maybe I'll see if I can find a pattern and get one made.

I think a member of the heavy metal band Slipknot wore one of those, they wear some outrageous masks.
-
You just made my day :) :) :)
-
Well you certainly won't have any trouble with social distancing, lol. Dang you are good with leather work. I am still amazed with what you did for my grand daughter.
-
Glad I could make your day, bownarra.
Jon, it's my therapy. When Dylan asked if I would try to make this for him I jumped and learned a few new techniques in the process. How id Johanna's bag holding up?
-
She loves it. Uses it on special occasions I think to show off with it.
-
I finished up this mask today. Dylan sent me some lenses from old welding/cutting goggles that I sewed into the eye holes. Pretty damn freaky! I'll be showing it around first before I send it to Dylan. Enjoy.

You should wear that to the grocery store, and have someone walk behind you filming people's reactions.
-
I need one of those :)

Thanks guys. It was a fun and instructive project. I think I'll make myself one for Halloween.

...THIS HALLOWEEN, just when you thought it was safe to return to the archery range....
PAT B is.... the BOWDERER!
-
i'm glad that everyone has gotten a kick out of this thing ;D
if your interest in wearing one is purely costuming there is another later version called a "Venetian plague doctors mask" that just covers the upper half of the face and is made from paper mache, might be more comfortable to wear at a party ;D
-
Pretty cool, bet that thing would be hot to wear in Wally world but would get some strange looks which would make it worth it. ;) :)
Pappy

The beard just sets it off ;D
-
Pappy, could you imagine how bad it was during the plague with the smells of death and the plague. I bet the lavender crammed in the beak was little help.
Clint, I can stuff my beard in the beak so I can be anonymous.
