So, making my way through the List (it grew a lot just recently!) I pulled the wainscotting from around the kitchen sink and found a big patch of dry rot. I pulled off the plasterboard and burned the rot back to the stonework. I've re-plumbed everything and new splash-backs will be fitted so everything should stay nice and dry. Do I need to treat the (black) mortar or can I just render and skim the wall. Also, should I put a fungicide in the render mix?

Where ever there is black mold, bleach water 50/50 with a spray bottle. Whether stone, drywall, wood, etc. Let dry and close the area up as normal. As far as the stone masonry is concerned, as long as the mortar is not failing your good to go. John

Hadn't thought of bleach, sounds like a good call though. I think I'm going to replace the guttering and cut back the ivy to ground level just in case there's moisture coming in from outside.

Ivy is a big culprit of mortar failure. John
