Each state has different game laws.

Use a broadhead. Most states require a 7/8” wide broadhead.

If your only hunting small game I see a lot of guys using blunts.
Blunts are also harder to lose in grass too.

Having hunted rabbits and squirrels for over 50 years with archery equipment, I have graduated from rubber blunts, steel blunts, judo points,  and other "grabber" type points to using a sharp point.  Any type of cheap broadhead is now my go to arrow head for small game.  They kill quicker and usually stop a small critter faster than a blunt.  JMO.

How do you think an iron blunt would preform?

steel, iron makes no difference as a standard round blunt
ace hex heads are a great option.

I use Ace hex heads on small game, too.  Cheap, tough, relatively hard to loose.  I've thought about doing the old trimmer string trick to keep them from burying in grass, but I don't want to weaken the shaft at the weakest point by drilling a hole through it.

Bodkins would work fine for killing small game. I've taken a lot of rabbits with field points. The problem is when you miss.    ;)

Epoxy or super glue the trimmer string to the shaft.  Soften the string over a candle to get it to wrap around the shaft.  Might try the four leaf clover "bird points".
