Title: Hackberry bendy handle 40# @ 25”
Post by: Mo_coon-catcher on July 03, 2020, 05:58:11 pm
Here’s a little bendy handle I made from a very slow growing hackberry with tiny growth rings. I’m addition to tight rings it also is covered in really fine curl. Making it a really pretty piece of wood to look at. The overlays are buffalo horn, backed with a northern watersnake skin, and tied off the handle wrap thread with some turkey back feathers. The remainder of the snake skin was used as a creating for a dozen arrows made to go with the bow. It is 54” long and about 1 3/8” wide to midlimb tapering to 1/2” nocks.

Thanks for looking,
Kyle

2nd that...good looking gear, both bows. I assume "mo" is Missouri. That state born and bred me.

Nice!  The snake wraps on the arrows are really cool.  Is that some of the hackberry we split?

Thanks guys! This is probably the prettiest bow I’ve built.

Stickmark- it sure does, grew up near Macon, MO and not long who moved to Holts Summit.

Timbo- this one isn’t, it’s from a small diameter tree I cut a few years ago. I did use one picci if the hackberry for corner posts on a bed frame, it worked real well for that, and showed that it’s still a bit wet. The ends cracked a little when I cut the pieces to length. I’m probably gonna start on a piece or two from that tree this fall. And once the staves ate a bit more dry I’m goin the saw the most straight and clean ones into laminations for backing. I’m real curious to see how hackberry will work as a backing. I’m a big fan of how those arrows tuned out. And those snake skins were much easier to work with than I expected. Soak the hide, cut to the lengths I want, square up one edge, dab a little glue where I want the skins, roll on the skin and trim when wrapped, then I wrapped the skins with fishing line to hold them down while they dried.

Those skins are very nice. I also love the work beneath it. You do great work - congrats to your most beautiful bow!
